Command completion of the R binary / Ubuntu
Dear Deepayan and dear list,
I notice a small inconsistency with the command completion of the R CMD
check. --no-latex is deprecated sincs R 2.12.0 and defunct since 2.13.0
but the command line completion still suggests it:
cb at cbdesktop:~/r-devel$ bin/R CMD check --no-<here I hit tab>
--no-clean --no-examples --no-latex --no-vignettes
--no-codoc --no-install

error message from lmer
Hi,
I've begun to use the lme4 package, rather than nlme, for more flexibility
during modelling, and running the examples in lmer I receive this error
message:

ifelse behaviour
Hi!
I'm puzzled by the return value of ifelse
consider
x<-integer(0)
ifelse(is(x, "character"), paste(x), x)
[1] NA
whereas
if (is(x, "character")) return(paste(x)) else x
[1] integer(0)
or
x<-integer(1)
ifelse(is(x, "character"), paste(x), x)
[1] 0
work as I had anticipated. Is this correct behaviour?

Matthias

[nbdkit PATCH] build: Allow 'make install' into non-root --prefix: bash-completion
In general, autotooled packages are supposed to allow
'./configure --prefix=$HOME/subdir' as a way to then get
'make install' to run as non-root. In fact, 'make distcheck'
tests that this scenario works; alas, we fail due to:

Is rcompgen still recommended?
I just built R-devel from source on OS X (Tiger), using the subversion
sources. Running ./tools/rsync-recommended didn't download rcompgen. I
checked
http://cran.r-project/src/contrib/2.7.0/Recommended
and indeed, this package is not there. If I try to install using
install.packages I get

R 2.5.0 devel try issue in conjuntion with S4 method dispatch
Hi,
after updating R 2.5.0 devel yesterday we today observed many new
unexpected failures in our daily package build and test system runs,
which can be traced to recent changes in the implementation in try()
(as noted in NEWS).
Investigating this new implementation I come across an issue in
conjuntion with using S4 classes and methods. try(expr) does not return an

Building package: What does this message about rcompgen imply?
Hi all
I'm updating a package for submission to CRAN, and I am getting
an error message I never have seen before, and can't find out
what it implies or means (and hence, what I need to do to fix
it).
After running R CMD check, I get this:

ANN/RFC: package providing TAB completion for readline-based R
Announcement:
(For those every-once-in-a-while occasions when you run R from a
terminal instead of Emacs, and then wish something would happen when
you hit TAB...)
Last week, I started looking at the GNU Readline documentation to see
if I could figure out how to use it for command completion within R.
It turned out to be easier than I had expected, and I now have a beta

FreeNX and bash-completion
Hi!
I have the following packages installed:
freenx-0.4.4-1.centos4.noarch from extras
bash-completion-20050721-1.2.el4.rf.noarch from dries/dag
bash-3.0-19.2.i386 from base
seems to result in a non-working nxserver (the window manager doesn't
start up, although X applications can be launched via logging in
through a seperate ssh and setting the DISPLAY variable accordingly)...

R 2.5.0 in Debian unstable
I just uploaded R 2.5.0 to Debian's unstable distribution. As Peter's
announcement says, it now contains two new packages'rcompgen' and
'codetools'.
About two or three weeks ago, I also packaged these, just like other
'recommended' packages as r-cran-rcompgen and r-cran-codetools. However, as
"new" packages, they are still in the NEW queue awaiting

completion doesn't work anymore
Hi,
after updating to 2.7.0, command line completion doesn't work anymore. I
understand that the package rcompgen is now part of utils. I hadn't used
rcompgen before but completion worked without it (I double checked it
using an 2.6.2 version on another machine). Now, it doesn't work, even
after switching on all option via "rc.settings". I updated R using the
