Reading multiple files into R
I want to read data from a number of files into R.
Reading individual files one by one requires writing enormous amount of
code that will look something like the following.
****************
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-01vc.dbf")->dist1
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-02vc.dbf")->dist2
maptools:::dbf.read("wb-03vc.dbf")->dist3

CRAN task views work only once per session (PR#9330)
Cran task views seems to be a "once-per-session" process -- the first
attempt to access views in a (RGui for Windows) session works, but
subsequent attempts fail. There is a noticeably long pause before
the failing call returns.
Example session with two calls to "available.views" follows, but similar
effects have been observed with two calls to "install.views" and

print.citation, small bug?
Hi,
I use Sweave extensively in my consulting work. When submitting reports to
the scientists I work
with I like to use the citation function to reference any packages I use, to
give proper acknowledgement.
I noted in the documentation that a citation inherits from bibentry, and
indeed,

Revised versions of the maptools and sp packages
Revised versions of maptools, a package for reading geographical data from
shapefiles, and sp, a package with classes and methods for spatial data
handling, have been released on CRAN. They are maptools release 0.5-1 and
sp release 0.8-1.
The maptools package now depends on sp (>= 0.8), so that users of maptools
will need both to update the package itself, and to install the sp
package. All

The legacy R spatial infrastructure packages maptools, rgdal and rgeos will be archived by CRAN on Monday, October 16, 2023; rgrass7 has already been replaced by rgrass and will be archived with the retiring packages.

make pkg on windows NT
Hi,
I am trying to compile a package i am developing on my home computer where
i am running Windows NT 4.0 service pack 6. Everything works fine on my
other computer at work running windows 98.
I am using the cygwin 1.1 bash shell and tolls with the MingW compiler,

Re: using shapefile as owin
My sincerest apologies, as this is a very elementary problem, but I have
searched through archives and FAQs and on the web, and I am at the end of my
own resources.
I need to do analysis of a spatial point process occuring with four
counties, using spatstat. I've had no trouble importing the shapefiles, but
I can't seem to figure out what I need to do in order to use the boundary as

wrong fill colors in polygon-map
Dear all,
I would like to produce a map with information about the patenting
activity in German districts, by coloring districts with different
degrees of patenting activity in different colors. I work with the
packages maptools, maps and spdep. The map data is read from an external
.shp file (+ the corresponding .shx and .dbf files). Plotting a map with
the IDs or the patenting indicator itself

how to import map data (maptools?) from a html set of 'coords'
Dear R users,
I would like to draw map and import it in maptools/spatstat packages.
The 'raw data' I have come from a web page (<map>...</map>) and are
basically a list of coordinates of a polygon.
I would like to know how to import them in R; I checked the maptools
packages, but all the examples use existing .dbf files.
I just have a (serie of) text file(s) looking like

package (in development)
Hi,
I have submitted the package maptools (the file is maptools-0.1a.zip). The
archive contains the source ready to compile. I have tested everything on
windows 98 and NT and haven't found any major bugs (yet). It should work
on lin/unix as well but I don't have easy access to a machine to test
it.
Of interest might be the functions dbf.read and dbf.write.
Also there is a function to

ESRI shapes --again
thanks to all the help so far I have code now that works on windows
(albeit very clunky) that can read the pertinent info from the shape header
and return a list with all the necessary parameters to read info out of
the shape file. Now come the big design questions
1) I have considered building a map object, basically a list that would
hold the info from the shape file and a data frame as part of
