That means that you have the wrong make and/or the wrong sh. You need the
set in the tools distribution: certain Cygwin ones work but most do not. We
find it very frustrating too.

Yes. It won't work on many Windows 95 machines, as that page says.
If that is not an issue for you, by all means use the msvcrt version.
