Help with Apache config
I have been attempting for days to configure Apache for Rails. I have read forums, followed How-To''s all in vain. I am hoping someone can help me out. I am getting the Rails Welcome screen, but when trying to go to any other url, I get the 500.html message. Take a look for yourself at http://66.139.78.237 and click on "about your application''s environment".

Hello, I need to store somewhere one hundred of static ressources text field (internationalization). Exploring ActiveRecord::Base#serialize
Hi I was recently taught about the useful ActiveRecord::Base#serialize. It''s very useful for persisting arbitrary objects through the regular database. For example, say you want to store a Set of all the years a Convention took place. You do: class Convention < ActiveRecord::Base serialize :years, Set end This effectively creates a Convention#years attribute, which is a set: you

Firefox JS Console unusable
Hello, I wonder if somebody else is experiencing the same problem : Firefox''s Javascript console is unusable with RJS or Scriptaculous libraries. Every time I want to use it for debugging purpose (evaluating $ or $$ calls for example) I get a message stating that a script on the page must be stopped. If I stop that ''script'' (which script it is ?) the console is

Which Linux flavor for a Rails server?
Hi folks, I''m a linux noob, and I''m trying to pick a distro for my rails server. I don''t want to start a flame-war about linux distros! I''m interested in the best distribution for these criteria: 1 - Simplicity of getting ruby and rails set-up (gem updates) 2 - Stability (it is a server, after all) 3 - Support resources (community, and as a fall-back, paid

Generating a unique id ?
Hello, I need to generate a unique ID, so far I''ve unit tested this under 100000 iterations and it seems to work : now.to_i.to_s + ''-'' + now.usec.to_s + ''-'' + rand(1000).to_s Is there a better way ? Thanks Notes : 1) without usec, few percents of generated values are not uniques 2) the id generated is a string so the presence of

wine iexplore white screen of death
On a fresh Ubuntu, sudo apt-get install wine wine iexplore yields a white screen of death with a title bar for Wine. I tried winecfg and tweaking settings, and I can get a desktop with IE WSOD again, so no real progress. The shell outputs a ton of errors/debug info, pasted below... What have I done wrong? wine iexplore fixme:ole:CoResumeClassObjects stub fixme:shdocvw:go_home stub

wsod since upgrading to 1.1
I just upgraded to 1.1 and I am now getting the wsod for errors that used to display on the screen. E.G. NoMethodError gives wsod. Does any one know what caused this and how I can go back to the previous behavior? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

rforum engine
Here''s a question for those well-versed in rforum or engines -- or both, ideally :) I''ve spent some time today turning RForum into an engine, using rails 1.0, engines trunk, and rforum 0.1 (as rforum trunk didn''t appear to work out of the box). My rforum engine works, but only when I do two things that I found by trial and error: 1) All rforum controllers subclass

create separate plots by factors
Hello, I am attempting to create several plots based on "site" (~300 total) and am having trouble with the code. I simply want to create a plot using the code, plot(year, peak), for the following dataset. I would like for each site to be plotted on a separate page and the plots saved in a directory. Would a "foreach" loop work? I tried a "by" statement, but

RForum Software Sucks?
(Donning flameproof suit) Am I the only person who thinks that the Ruby forum software sucks? E.g. search only for a word. Can''t search for new posts, can''t search by date, topic list doesn''t indicate when I''ve already read a post, there can be several independent replies to a topic, just to name a few. There are lots (admittedly not Ruby based) of good

Is IRB the ruby console ?
I''m running script/console but keep getting the message that irb.bat is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Maintaining and securing the "Perfect Rails/Debian/Lighttpd Stack"
Hi there I''m planning to build "The Perfect Rails/Debian/Lighttpd Stack", published by Ezra Zygmuntowicz and Sean Schertell at http://brainspl.at/rails_stack.html I''m wondering what sort of constant maintanance that setup would incur. What actions have be regularly performed to keep this setup healthy and secure under normal conditions? Alder

Why no forum app in rails yet?
Hi Guys, So creating a forums application seems like something that rails can handle easily and well, and whatever implementation that came to fruition would be head and shoulders above existing products like vBulliten and phpBB. Even the existing rails forums are using php-based forum products! An insult if you ask me. So my question -- is there any current development of a rails-based

InstantRails 1.0 problems...
Hi, I have installed InstantRails 1.0 Final on Win XP (Home SP2) and Win 2K 2000. I was able to get the two apps (cookbook, typo) work fine with Webrick but not with SCGI server. I tried changing the SCGI settings through the InstallRails.exe console so that the Runtime Mode: would be "development" instead of "production" and SCGI port: to 5000 instead of 9998.

Ruby Before Rails
As I, like many people, are coming to ruby in the rails era, I''m curious about how Ruby Web Dev was done prior to rails.
