How do I emulate directory structure with routes?
I''ve got something that I''m not sure is actually doable. I have a
very complex model relationship with a lot of parent/child/grandchild/
greatgrandchild etc stuff going on. Is there a way to do a route like
this?
tld.com/
projects/:project_name/:sequence_acronym/:shot_number/:department/:eleme
nt_name/:version/
where:
project is the parent of sequence
sequence is the

Install to Site5
is there any way to install a RoR application to Site5 (or any other
host for that matter) that doesn''t require shell access. It would be
nice, for simplicity sake, to be able to upload an application edit a
.htaccess (or something) and have the application just run.
[ it doesn''t really matter if there is no way to do this. its just
that I''m trying to test my apps on a

content type based on regex (i.ie, /^image/) and/or filesize (150k)
?

Including another helper
I need to include another helper module apart from the normal two
(ApplicationHelper and [controllername]Helper). The inclusion needs to
be dynamic and based on external parameters (ie what helper that get
included differ from request to request).
Is it possible? How?

WYSIWYG IDE, etc...
I''m new to Ruby, so don''t be too hard on me.
Is there a great visual editor for Ruby?
Also can Ruby on Rails (RoR) work with any other databases other than
the ones listed in the documentation, I need to connect to SQLBase?
Can Ruby be used to create standalone Applications (like Java)?
If yes, does it create native looking apps?
Can it be use in Client-Side and/or Server

Thoughts on Second-Tier Documentation
In the course of this argument, keep in mind that I think Rails is
making excellent progress in the development of documentation and
community. I am only trying to develop discussion of where we need to
go next.
A consistent theme we are seeing on this list, I believe, is frustration
caused by the lack of second-tier documentation. So far we have...

Rails Cluster Design
Hello everyone!
A collegue and I are beginning development on a site that will
eventually need to very scalable (assuming our business model is a
good idea). My problem is that I''m not a sysadmin guru, and I''m not
terribly comfortable with the design of the hosting platform. We''re
going to start with two servers initially (for cost reasons), and I''m

file_column error
Hmm, I''m using file_column and going by this tutorial, the files upload
ok and I can see the fields updated in the database, but I am getting
this error:
"Trying to access file_column, but primary key got lost."
Thanks in advance

and later read value from the database and get "DKK", what is the
easiest way to get "Kroner" value?

newbie-> help understanding "magic" behavior
I am trying out ROR for the first time[1], and have much PHP poisoning
to overcome in my mental baggage. That said, I was delighted to find
that I could make a link from a "show" page to the next record in the
database by simply adding
@next_page = Content.find(params["id"].next)
to my content_controller.rb and then constructing a link to it within
my show.rhtml.

How to render from with <%%> ?
I have a loop that I iterate through in my view.
<%
coll.each do |itm|
puts(itm.value)
end
%>
How do I render the itm.value without using a <%= %> tag? Should puts
not work?
Joerg
P.S. There is a good enough reason for me wanting to do this :-)

require ''digest/md5'' not working on Mac or Windows
I''ve tried the following line in ruby script/console
require ''digest/md5''
Both my Mac (Intel iMac) and my Windows box return "false"... Any ideas
what could be wrong? I was trying to do the RoR Recipe on page 54 of
Chad Fowler''s new (beta) book.

ActiveRecord + memcache = cached_model
Courtesy of The Robot Co-op.
$ yes | sudo gem install cached_model
Or, you can download cached_model and memcache-client (our zippy-fast
memcache library, required) from:
http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=1266
I don''t have the README posted for making cached_model work online
yet, so here it is:

Getting Net::IMAP to work with PLAIN auth type...
Hi there,
I''m new to rails and I''ve been successful tinkering around but
am miffed by the process of trying to connect to my mail server to receive
email for ActiveMailer parsing. I''m hosted on TextDrive and have read the
following article on the RubyonRails wiki:

RoR - Mac OS 10.4.4 on Intel
I got a new 20 inch iMac dual core today and am busy getting it all
setup. A couple of issues though:
1. Is the Ruby 1.8.2 install by Apple still botched or has that been
fixed? I recall someone had fixed the rbconfig.rb to get it working.
Is this something I still have to do?
2. Does anyone know if Locomotive is using the uniersal binaries, or is
it targetting PPC yet? I couldn''t

The New Memcache ?
Hey All !
I ended up browsing to Eric Hodel''s blog the other night, and found his
entry about the new cache_model and memcache-client.
Now, it looks like it''s "officially" out in the open:
http://weblog.rubyonrails.com/articles/2006/01/20/caching-models-with-memcached
In my application, I''ve been staying away from caching my models, and

Rails Borked After 1.1.3 Install?
I installed 1.1.3 on my OS X Tiger machine and now I''m seeing very strange
results.
When hitting a controller action, I am told that perfectly valid methods are
not there:

Huh? Here''s the code in question:

this to my environment/development.rb

mysql mem-tables vs. memcached
Could someone please elaborate on the technical differences and practical
impact of whether choosing memory-based tables in MySQL or using memcached.
I got this far on my own:
It seems that MySQL uses the NDB engine for transaction-safe memory access
in a cluster. the memory storage engine seems to be faster but not
synchronizable by any means in a cluster. memcached seems to be ultimately
fast
