List etiquette question
I''ve written a little ruby/rails hangman-ish app to keep my wife occupied at
work that I think list members might also find interesting. I''m new to this
list so I wanted to see if it would be considered bad form to post the link
before I did. There aren''t any ads so I''m not getting anything out of more
visitors, but I still didn''t want to take the

override created_on column name
We are using Rails for a project that must integrate with a legacy
database. Is there a way to get Rails to automatically set the timestamp
for a column named something other created_on or updated_on ?
Also, how does one manipulate the size of the database connection pool?

Rails Vs JBoss Seam
I have been frustrated with J2EE technology just like any other developer who has worked in that
technology for a long time. This made me learn about Rails and I was excited about RoR. Today I
came across JBoss Seam framework and I am not able to contain my excitement.
My passion for JEE development is back. It seems like it is better than RoR. I would like to hear
differnt opinions about this

session state w/ >1 processes
When routing requests to more than one fcgi process, what are my options
with Rails? Are most people in the community just using some form of
session affinity?

Transaction syntax for > 1 table/model
If I want to wrap two account updates, the syntax is ...
Account.transaction(dennis, david) do
dennis.withdraw(10);
david.deposit(10);
end
.. where both dennis and david are instances of Account.
Can someone please let me know what the syntax is for starting and ending
a *single* database transactions which spans two *different* kinds of
models/tables ?

How to purchase R on CD
My organization has a policy against "installing software downloaded from
the Internet." There is a waiver procedure, but it is difficult and
lengthy. It is much easier to get approval to purchase software, even if
it is a CD copy of open-source.
However, a search on r-project.org didn't seem to show any way of obtaining
the distribution in this way.
Any clues would be

generalized matrix product ?
Is there available in R a generalized inner product or matrix product,
similar to 'outer(x,y, fun)', where one can specifiy an arbitrary function
in place of ordinary multiplication?
Here's my application. I frequently analyze user questionnaires from our
HR/training department. These have questions of the form
"please rate your skill in task X",

warnings from hist(): parameter XXX couldn't be set in high-level plot functionN
Hello -
This is not a real problem, just an annoyance. Sometimes, but not always,
I get a set of strange warnings from hist(). Example follows.

#Produce a histogram of start dates for a set of field measurements.
# I didn't reproduce all the dates, because not sure it's relevant, but
here's a sample.
# Note the invalid date in the fifth element.

Disk Size Issue
I am sure this is not a problem, but more of a "can we do this" question. We
are using Samba Version 2.0.6 and my problem is this:
We have one Samba server for a site, we NFS mount filesystems from various other
machines to the Samba server, we then create a directory on the Samba server and
then create links under that directory to each of the mounted filesystems we
want to share.

slide show with R
Trying to use R to build an interactive "slide show", to be displayed on a
projector. The purpose of the presentation is to show how one could
construct a simple graph using R. It is meant as a general overview rather
than as detailed instruction.
For example, something like the following sequence of commands. At
lecture time, I want the interpreter to read these commands one at a

Hello,
Is there a way to upgrade my current ZFS version. I show the version could

I tried the command below. It seems that you can only upgrade by upgrade
the OS release.

usage:
upgrade
upgrade -v

SWAT port change
Hi Folks,
I have a conflict on port 901 which is the default for SWAT. I tried to
reassign it to port 902 in /etc/services and this did not work. Does any
one know how to re-assign the port number for SWAT? (We use AIX)
Thanks

Invisible samba server
Hi,
My samba server "linux-1" (samba-3.0.2-7.FC1) has suddenly become
invisible from all windows client. The samba server is a member of the
"RASKNO" workgroup and was visible when browsing the workgroup from
windows clients a few weeks ago.
The weird thing is that it is now invisible. The only changes has been
regular updates of FC1.
The symptoms is that I can search for

degree-min-sec data
Hello -
Have both astronomic and geodetic data sets with values in the form
"ddd:mm:ss.sssss", where dd is an integer between -180 and 180, mm is an
integer between 0 and 60, and ss is a floating-point
number between 0 and 60.0. In order to do anything useful with these
values they need to be turned into their "decimal degree" equivalent.
Assuming the data is a vector y, the

Quadratic regression: estimating the maximizing value
A bioligist colleague sent me the following data.
x Y

24 0
(Yes, only four data points.) I don't know much about the
application, but apparently there are good empirical
reasons to use a quadratic model.
The goal is to find the X value which maximizes the
response Y, and to find a confidence interval for this X
value.
Finding the maximizing X value is pretty
