SME on CentOS, telnet and MySQL
After failing to install on two different machines that were running
Windows, I realized that one machine had a bad hard-drive, and the other
bad memory. So I've collected the good parts into one machine and
installed CentOS with SME. This was the fastest install of Linux I have
every seen, 15 minutes done, configured, and running, web and email
server. It is a very secure config, no GUI

Accounting package recommendations
Hi,
I am looking for an offline accounting package recommendation, please.
I enjoyed using Xero accounting, but need something that's offline,
and where the data remains my property. Having used Quickbooks on
Windows in the past, I am looking for something similar.
Any recommendations?

how to boot domU XEN guest in safe mode?
Hi all,
How can I boot a XEN domU guest into safe mode? One of our servers was
forcefully shutdown, and it seems like one of my VM''s could be
corrupt, or something.
When I boot it up, I get the following on the console:
Creating root device.
Mounting root filesystem.
kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.

OT: looking for a rsync equivalent for Windows platforms
Hi all,
Does anyone know of a good & free rsync type program for Windows
platforms? Like most of us, I need to work on both Windows & Linux
environments, and would like to sync some data (music, videos, photos,
documents, thunderbird profiles, FF bookmarks, etc) between a USB HDD,
my Linux (CentOS + KDE) PC, and Windows Laptop at the office.
I found a program called Toucan (which also

how to connect to a switch with a serial cable? - what command(s) to use?
Hi all,
I see one of our switches doesn't want to respond to HTTPS or SSH
commands, and I know it's connected to a server via a serial cable.
I'm 3 hours drive from that server at the moment, so how can I connect
to it from the Linux server, via SSH?

looking for some advice to monitor network usage in office
Hi all,
I've been asked by a college to setup a monitor to monitor a Windows
network, but on internet usage. They want to have detailed usage, i.e.
on a per IP / PC basis, and if possible to get stats for every
protocol, and see over a period of time what goes on.
My first though wat ntop, which does all of this, but it doesn't save
the data in a DB, so if the server reboots the stats

how can I stress a server?
Hi all,
I have a server, with an Intel DG35EC motherboard, Q9300 CPU, 8GB
Kingston DDRII RAM which can't take a lot of load. I have 4 XEN VPS's
on there, which doesn't consume more than 4GBM RAM at this stage. Yet,
the machine sky rockets at some times. I've moved the XEN VPS's to
another server, with 4GM RAM, and it doesn't cause the same problems.
So, apart from

oVirt on CentOS 5.3?
Hi,
Has anyone been succesful in installing oVirt on CentOS 5.3? While it looks
like a greate virtualization package, they only support FC10, and the
installation instructions are for FC9.
So, has anyone installed it on CentOS yet? If so, would you mind sharing
with me whether it was a problematic installation, or not really?

settings up cheap a NAS / SAN server, is it possible?
Hi all
I want to look at setting up a simple / cheap SAN / NAS server using
normal PIV motherboard, 2GB (or even more) RAM, Core 2 Duo CPU (probably
a Intel 6700 / 6750 / 6800) & some SATA HDD's (4 or 6x 320GB - 750GB).
My budget is limited, so I can't afford a pre-built NAS device.
Can this be done with CentOS? I've been looking FreeNAS (which is built
on FreeBSD), and it

Re: Can Xen boot a Linux OS already installed in a realpartition
Well, you have two options:
1) If your hardware supports VT, you can boot this in a Xen HVM domU (fully virtualized). To do this, you need to make sure that the initrd images in the Linux partition are set up correctly to support the PIIX IDE/ATA chipset and that your root and fstab entries use the correct device.
2) If you can install a Xen domU kernel into the Linux partition install, you can

how to debug hardware lockups?
Hi,
We have a server which locks up about once a week (for the past 3
weeks now), without any warning, and the only way to recover it, is to
reset the server. This causes unwanted downtime, and often software
loss as well.
How do I debug the server, which runs CentOS 5.2 to see why it locks
up? The CPU is an Intel Q9300 Core 2 Quad, with 8 GB RAM, on an Intel
Motherboard

i.e. Can I setup another machine, on a different public IP than the
dynamic ADSL IP as default gw? OR do I need todo something on that
machine to work as a router for

can CentOS act as an iSCSI server?
Hi all,
I would like to know if I could share some space on on of my servers,
to another server(s) using the iSCSI protocal? I can see that CentOS

Is so, does anyone have some good HOWTO / tutorials / docs on how to set it up?
