release/update question
hi, since i don't use centos very heavily i'm not too familiar with the centos/rhel release/update process (and i didn't do much research on this): is it normal behavior that through the use of "yum update" systems are forced to follow the point releases of a major release (5.0 -> 5.1 -> 5.2, etc)? is there a way and would it make sense to stay within one particular

RHEL 5.3 Beta released, beta-testers needed
Hi all, The CentOS community is pretty limited in what we can do to the core distribution. Since our mantra is "aiming to be 100% compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux" we cannot fix bugs or improve the CentOS core without waiting for Red Hat to make those modifications first. We have limited leverage and a 6-month release cycle against us. But that is not the complete truth,

Best virtualization setup for Centos 5.2
Hi, we are running Centos 5.2 on our servers for some time now and are really happy with it. Now I'm investigating the best way to setup virtual machines in order to streamline our infrastructure. The setup I'm aiming for is Centos 5.2 guests on Centos 5.2 host. The physical systems are going to be 2xquad core Xeons and the VMs are probably going to be 1 or 2 vCPUs with 1 or 2 gb of

yum udpate not getting new kernel
On one notebook (so far), I have not picked up the new kernel: kernel-2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.i686.rpm I have gotten it on some notebooks. So far the only difference I can see between the systems that MIGHT matter is those that got the update were new installs and had not reached 3 installed kernels. The one that failed already had 3 kernels in /boot. But I seem to recall this was about how

Trouble with 5.2==>5.3 upgrade
I've updated two 5.2 systems without a hitch. But this third one is giving me some grief. See errors below. Googling for "Package does not match intended download" turns up a bunch of hits, but none of them (that I've seen) offers any working solution. Can someone suggest how to overcome the following error(s) Thanks a bunch! Downloading Packages: (1/1): kernel-2.6.18-128.

Xen DomU supoprt in RHEL 7 and the CentOS Plan
Hi Guys, so far, in rhel7rc its pretty clear that Xen instances ( domUs ) are not going to boot with the RHEL7rc kernel. Also, i think at this point its a safe bet that these things wont change to GA - no way to accertain that, but its a safe bet ). Wondering if someone has looked into what the challenges might be to enable this support, and then what the options are to deliver this support ?

Dell Poweredge R300
Hi all, Just found out that the Poweredge R300 cant even load the CentOS 5.2 64bit installer. Had to revert to Ubuntu. Seems its a driver problem. Pity, but does this kind of case apply to many other servers? --- OSCC MAMPU MyMeeting Version 2.0 Release http://knowledge.oscc.org.my/solution-areas/application/mymeeting

Kernel panic from install CD
I have a bunch of DecTOPs. Use the AMD Geode chip. Yesterday I upgraded one of them, and got the dreaded Kernel panic. Something about powernowk8. I could boot up with the old kernel, though. I know I have to put in a bug report on this, will do shortly, but first wanted to try a fresh install on another DecTOP. At the prompt, I specified: linux askmethod After it loaded the kernel, it

Bugs in yum update
This is a continuation of the thread: "yum update fails: CentOS 5.2". I installed a fresh Centos 5.2 and ran yum update. It ran correctly, except for these issues: 1. As previously mentioned, after deciding what it is going to do, It doesn't ask if its ok. But if I type y<enter> it reports: Is this ok [y/N]: Downloading Packages: 2. During the long period it

new list proposal
One thing that we are often blamed for is trying to stifle conversations and to discourage people from commenting / contributing / encouraging conversations. And that cant be further from the truth, really. We are all pro-community ( and when I say we, I mean everyone - including the contributors, developers, admins, users, abusers and hey upstream too ). However, one thing that does get in

Question re RHEL 5.3
I've heard now from more than one source about problems with CentOS (and RH) at least up through 5.2 w.r.t. SATA drive handling, and I've even reported on this myself in this list before. My question is, do we have any idea if 5.3 has any improvements in this area? One of my cohorts here, who happens to be a Fedora fan, says that these problems are fixed in F9, but I have grave concerns

How to get a specific named element in a nested list
Hello, I have a nested named list structure, like the following: x <- list( list( list(df1,df2) list(df3, list(df4,df5)) list(df6,df7))) with df1...d7 as data frames. Every data frame is named. Is there a way to get a specific named element in x? so, for example, x[[c("df5")]] gives me the data frame 5? Thank you in advance! Best, Friedericksen

Chainloading pxe boot loaders and dhcp root-path option
Is there anyway to set dynamically set dhcp options when chain loading another pxe boot loader? I'm setting up a pxelinux network install server and one operating system I want to support is freebsd. Freebsd has its own pxe loader called pxeboot that you can use. You just have to boot it from tftp and set the root-path dhcp option (option 17) to the location of your nfs server with the

CentOS 5.2
If I read correctly - the 5.2 release will have xen 3.0 Does that mean I will be able to run vista as guest operating system? I seem to remember reading that vista could be run under xen 3.0 I have found instructions for installing XP under xen 3.0 in Debian, so I'm hoping it vista on CentOS 5.2 will also be possible ?? There's only a small handful of apps I need/want - but they
