USB and serial
Hello, everyone -
I have an old Windows app - a ship navigation program - that needs to
see GPS input on a serial port (it was written in the pre-USB days.) My
laptop, however, has no serial ports - but this same program, when run
on a friend's Windows box, can read the GPS info from the USB-connected
GPS via the "USB-Serial Driver". This is one of the frustrating bits of

is it possible to login to a switch via RS232 / serial port from the shell?
Hi all
I have a problem switch in our data centre, which is connected to a
linux server via a serial cable. I know I can / could access the switch
from my Windows PC back at the office, using hyperterm, but trying to
access it using minicom just doesn't seem to work.
I have changed the comms in minincom to use /dev/tty0 & the baud rate to
9600, yet I can't seem to connect with

program fails to enumerate COM ports
Hi. LG PC Sync can work with ~/.wine/dosdevices/com1 but fails to enumerate com ports. I cannot select port other than COM1 and the combo box that would allow me to do that is blank.
I did:
# ln -s /dev/ttyACM0 ~/.wine/dosdevices/com5
# sudo chmod g+rw,o+rw /dev/ttyACM0
and added to registry:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Hardware\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM]

Users, Groups, etc.
On this machine I am user 'richard' ... and user richard is a member of the
group 'dialout'. Is this sufficient to access and control port 'com1' ...
because if I lack permissions ... then even if there is a link from
dosdevices com1 to /dev/ttyS0 ...wine will not be able to access com1.
Any comments on this??

usb to usb comm ports - possible? how?
I have an i686 mono core system configured as a CentOS-5.2 server. It has
one DB9P RS-232 serial connector and six USB connectors. The DB9p is
configuered as STTY0 for the attached MultiTec MT5638ZBA fax modem. I
would very much like to connect my MS WindowsXPpro laptop, which only has
USB connectors, to this server via telnet or ssh over a direct connection.
Is there a way to connect /

Since version 2004-07-16 it opens its main window, and most functions

Unwanted serial port interaction in pxelinux
I need to do some Windows device driver debugging using WinDbg from a
second system over the serial port.
The system PXE boots into a pxelinux menu first. I have observed that when
the serial port is connected there are characters from the debugging
system that are read and interpreted (as garbage) by pxelinux. Because of
this, I am forced to stop the debugger or unplug the serial cable every

Dumping Xen dom0 kernel output to serial console
Hi-
I am having a weird problem with setting dom0 kernel output to the
serial console with Xen 3.0.4-1, below is my grub setting. With this setting
if I don''t enter the grub menu and have the default boot to the first image,
everything works fine and I can get output/input to the serial console. The
problem is when I enter the grub menu and select the image to boot from, if

Powerware 9120 serial connection via USB/serial dongle
I decided to try this to see if it worked better since
Powerware decided to build in some oddball USB
protocol instead of using a HID UPS profile, but it
doesn't seem to work. The USB/serial dongle is
recognized by Linux and added as /dev/ttyUSB0, owned
by group "dialout", so I had to add the nut user to
the dialout group. In the compatibility list, the
proper driver for the
