Agile Rails book: depot problem 2
My second problem is:
Listing users, and deleting them doesn''t work.
If I try to list user, i just get this list:
User Delete
User Delete
User Delete
User Delete
I''m using this code in the login_controller:
def list_users
@all_users = User.find(:all)
end
def delete_user
@id = params[:id]
if id && user = User.find(id)
begin
User.destroy

win32-etc cvs
Hi all,
I''ve got the beginning of win32-etc 0.2.0 checked into cvs. This includes a
new sub-module called Admin that includes the add_user, delete_user, and
change_password methods. I eventually will add a config_user method as
well, plus whatever else I feel like tossing in. :)
One issue I''m having is with the change_password - no matter what I try, I
always get

elemental race conditions question
What''s the standard way to prevent race conditions in controllers?
Say user has many posts.
Post controller has action add_post that receives user id, post
controller find()s the user and while he is creating the post entry
an administrator deletes that user in a separate session. We cannot
assume the database checks foreign key integrity. How do you get that
right?

Lost in routing
I''m trying to create a modules based system where my controllers are
all under modules. So the structure looks something like:
app/
controllers/
message/
news_controller.rb
email_controller.rb
library
books_controller.rb
pictures_controller.rb
home_page_controller.rb
Each of those controller has

Signin to LinkedIn
Hi,
Does anyone have the formula for getting logged into LinkedIn?
Here''s my current attempt:
require ''rubygems''
require ''mechanize''
agent = WWW::Mechanize.new
home_page = agent.get(''http://www.linkedin.com'')
signin_page = agent.click home_page.links.text(''Sign in'')
puts "\nSIGNIN PAGE"

I have a form that should be a POST method, but Rails insist to put a
hidden field "_method" that has the value "put" does anyone knows why?
Thanks,

No stacktrace on errors (edge rails)
Hi,
I must be missing something or have something misconfigured, but I
get no stack-trace when there is an error in the code behind a view.
If the view doesn''t compile, then I see an error & stacktrace, but
all other errors I get a "lost network connection" from the browser,
and nothing at all in the server output or development.log.
It''s been that way with

Authorization
Hi,
Maybe I ask again for something what is wasn''t able to find anything.
Is there simple way how to process authorizations?
My imagine is that some action for controllers are allowed only to few
users. E. g. Everybody can look category list, but only registred user can
edit or add.
In best way, when user is signup, rails will remember his rights like:
adding_category = false

I need debugging tips?
Hi all,
Like most other frameworks, Ruby groups code by Model/View/Controller instead
of by task, and therefore I''m having a hard time debugging a problem from the
Agile Rails book where looping through @items errors out because one or more
items is nil.
I managed to empty the cart by placing session[:cart] = nil in find_cart() in
the store_controller_rb, and the problem continued

erubis on rails
Hey,
Just thought I''d see how easy it was to use erubis rather than erb in
rails, and so far all seems to be pretty easy. Just added a few lines in
environment.rb and everything works as before.
However, one page is causing a problem. It is a partial that is being
passed a local variable. erubis doesn''t seem to see the local, and gives
the following error?
undefined local

error messages, loops and saves, actionmailer and finaly authentication
Thanks to everyone who responded to my first set of questions. Not only did I
get my questions answered but I improved my code and learned a couple new
things.
I think I prefer the mailing list over IRC... easier to follow :-)
I have some more questions if you don''t mind. Some are Rails related and some
are Ruby related.
1) This is concerning displaying error messages. I am assuming

Default logger inside arbitrary classes
Hi,
What''s the best way to get the default logger (the one used during the tests) from inside a class that doesn''t inherit any rails class?
Thanks

woriking under webrick but not under passenger
Hi!
I have just added login feature to my rails application (followed the
instruction from (Agile Web Development with Rails) but now I am getting
strange errors (looks to me like some kind of routing problem) under the
passenger/apache.
The error is:
500 Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was
unable to complete your request.

logger in my classes
Hi,
I wrote a class which is not an AR extension, nor a controller.
I''d like to use logger.* methods there too.
My class is in lib/ dir. I include it in environment.rb with the line
require ''lib/localization''
just after the line
require File.join(File.dirname(__FILE__), ''boot'')
I tried many ways to reuse the logger class. The cleaner way seemed to

Access rails logger from plain class
How can I "get" the rails logger from a plain class, that is a class
that does not inherit from a rails class?
I have tried using RAILS_DEFAULT_LOGGER (see below) but it''s nil

logger = RAILS_DEFAULT_LOGGER
def myMethod
logger.debug("stuff...")

using log4r and rails
hey everyone. i know somebody else had started a thread on this subject,
but since no one seems to be answering that thread i thought i would
start one of my one.
i''m doing a project for a client and we need some seriously verbose
logging. it looks like log4r can do what i need, but i can''t for the
life of me figure out how to plug it into rails. everywhere talks about

How to Selectively Quite SQL Logging
I know about logger.silence but here is the issue: I''m comfortable with
the way the user engine is working, but it generates quite a bit of SQL
noise in the logs. I''d like, for that engine, to suppress the SQL
logging.
Code in it has return statements in conditionals, e.g.,
if !user?

Plain text passwords displayed in production.log
By default, all the paramaters are displayed in the production.log on a POST.
Unfortunately, this includes all the plain-text passwords that people type
into the login form on my application, which is a huge security risk. I''m
using a custom evaluation system that hooks into LDAP (not any of the
generators/plugins).
View code is simple:

Using logger from rails cron jobs
Hi. I''m trying to use logger from a rails cron job.
It works fine, but I''d like the standard ruby behavior of stamping each
log with date and time. How do I do this?
I''m trying:
# Set up out logging
require ''logger''
logger = Logger.new(STDERR)
logger.level = Logger::INFO
RAILS_DEFAULT_LOGGER = logger # Tell rails to log to our logger also
