Is SUNWhd for Thumper only?
I read Ben Rockwood''s blog post about Thumpers and SMART (http://cuddletech.com/blog/pivot/entry.php?id=993). Will the SUNWhd package only work on a Thumper? Can I use this on my snv_101 system with AMD 64 bit processor and nVidia SATA?

zfs root eta?
Hi, I was just wondering if ZFS root is likely to be an install option any time soon, either in SXCR or the June Solaris update? The mechanism at Tabriz''s blog seem to work well, but it''d be nice to get it out of the box. -- Rasputin :: Jack of All Trades - Master of Nuns http://number9.hellooperator.net/

aggregate slow with variables of type 'dates' - how to solve
Dear all I use aggregate with variables of type numeric and dates. For type numeric functions, such as sum() are very fast, but similar simple functions, such as min() are much slower for the variables of type 'dates'. The difference gets bigger the larger the 'id' var is - but see this sample code: dts <- dates(c("02/27/92", "02/27/92",

2 TB Limit and Windows XP Pro?
Does anyone know if Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 2) will have difficulty using a Samba share that is larger than 2 TB? Windows seems to be able to read and write from a share that is larger than 2 TB -- for instance, Windows will tell me that a share is 4 TBs in size, and if I have 1.5 TBs stored on it, it will tell me that 2.5 TB are free. But as soon as 2 TB of data have been written

Extracting files from OVA is bad
Hi, recently we (oVirt) have started discussing whether the way virt-v2v handles import from OVA files is good. And I would be interested in ideas how it can be improved. It is likely somebody already gave some thought to this problem. TL;DR: Extracting the OVA before import is a problem for large VMs (in sizes of TBs). Can we change something to prevent the extraction and work directly over

HotPlug, eSATA, and /media
Ok, got a quickie. I have an eSATA drive, a 750GB Seagate in an eSATA external enclosure, and a Silicon Image sil3132 ExpressCard controller for my laptop. The disk and controller work great in CentOS 5 (or F7, for that matter), if I specifically mount it. This is not how I want to have to use this drive, however. I want to hotplug it; that is, plug the controller into the laptop, and then

collecting the differences between a local host and remote archive to third local location (a usb device)
Hi everyone, I'm trying to archive to a remote host but the size of the data to copy is prohibitively large to consider doing the sync over the wire (it's TBs of raw video), so i was wondering if it was possible to use a usb attached storage device as the transport medium. Is it possible for rsync to compare the two systems (over the network) finding any newer or different files on the

zfs set sharenfs=on
I started sharing out zfs filesystems via NFS last week using sharenfs=on. That seems to work fine until I reboot. Turned out the NFS server wasn''t enabled - I had to enable nfs/server, nfs/lockmgr and nfs/status manually. This is a stock SXCR b49 (ZFS root) install - don''t think I''d changed anything much. Shouldn''t a ZFS share be permanently enabling NFS?

Thunderbird supports SPECIAL-USE (Merry x-mas!)
I've waited about two years to write this mail... :) As of Dezember, 24th Mozilla Thunderbird can handle SPECIAL-USE. The patch, which adds the required functionality, has passed review and TBs nightly build was successful. The next official Thunderbird release (version 38, release date 2015-05-19) will very likely ship SPECIAL-USE included. \o/ SPECIAL USE is an IMAP extension. It means

Any plans for using Atom with rails. I saw the "Typo" project is using MoveableType, Blogger, ... but not Atom. It seems Atom is not part of ActionWebService. Has anyone done any work with Atom and Rails ? Thanks for your answers, Gaspard

Data balance across vdevs
I''m migrating to ZFS and Solaris for cluster computing storage, and have some completely static data sets that need to be as fast as possible. One of the scenarios I''m testing is the addition of vdevs to a pool. Starting out, I populated a pool that had 4 vdevs. Then, I added 3 more vdevs and would like to balance this data across the pool for performance. The data may be

winbind/samba across subnet bounderies?
I have two samba servers (version 2.2.2-2, debian sid) with identical configuration. One stands in the server room and is part of the server subnet. the other is in the normal 'user' subnet. I added both server (several times!) to the win2000 domain. the procedure was identical. Both have secret.tbs files of 8192 bytes opposite to the 6xx bytes which they have when they are not joined to

bad blocks showing up
I am getting a few bad sector messages in my /var/log/messages. I have read where an "fsck -c -c /dev/hda" may be what I need. Before I go doing such things I am looking for confirmation that that is what I should do. Anyone please comment on how to tell linux to not use sectors in my disk. This is stright IDE no raid not nothing at this point /dev/hda is all. Thanks, jerry

strategy/technology to backup 20TB or more user's data
Hi Friends, I am currently using Samba on Centos 4.4 as a domain member of AD 2003 with each user having a quota of 2GB(no of users is around 2,000). Now the management wants to increase the quota to 10GB with this there will be more than 20TB of data to be backup weekly which will take lots of hours. Currently Veritas backup software is used to backup data on tapes. There is a concept of
