i18n friendly, plugable Rails Core
In my work with a simple localization plugin, i''m running into a lot of places in the Rails core, where text and other localization specific information is hardcoded. I''ve included some examples in the bottom of this post. It''s hard for an outsider to know, if the hardcoded values are a result of inconsistency in code, or "by design". I hope that we can have

L10N and i18n of R
Dear R-users of non-English speaking countires. Maybe a good news for those who want to use R in their local languages. Recently two Japanese, E. Nakama and M. Okada, succeeded in "making R speak Japanese". At present, R can handle Japanese (as well as other languages, I guess) character strings if one use consoles which can understand Japanese. Also P. Just another localization thread
Hey all, I was playing w/ Thomas Fuch''s Localization module (thanks Thomas!), and just realized how hard is to localize an application in Rails :-) The Localization module works nice, but the problem is the error messages. Its not that good to keep the application in [your idiom] and the error messages in english. I saw the other threads about it, specially the ones that recommends

Huge OO.org packages installed by default
I was just wondering if anyone here knows why the OO.org packages on RHEL/Centos are so huge. Eg. On Mandriva 2006: 40834529 OpenOffice.org 113064600 OpenOffice.org-libs 20124669 OpenOffice.org-help-en 19976941 OpenOffice.org-l10n-en = ~185MB On Centos 4: 683298379 openoffice.org-i18n 124072694 openoffice.org 111894560 openoffice.org-libs = ~876MB!! ruby on rails international & BIRT integration?
Hello, I see, that Rails is quite english-centric. I am developing some webs, that are not primarily in English. I have a few questions: - besides turning of plurals, what should I take care? How to use utf-8 for all data and converting it from local charsets to utf-8? - how do I make my page multilingual (i.e. adding english support later)? Is there something like gettext support? Is

About "/usr/sbin/zfs" and ksh93/libshell.so ...
Hi! ---- Is there any interest to turn the "zfs" utility (to clarify: This is about a change in the "zfs" utility itself, not about any "language bindings" etc.) from it''s (currently) "homegrown" command-line parsing code over to ksh93/libshell.so (this has been proposed by Amersham/GE Healthcare staff a while ago for the original

Family Connection 0.9
Family Connection is an easy-to-setup online hub for your family that includes a Family News section, and an Address Book. Currently, there is no documentation on installing the Rails application itself (hence the 0.9 version number). Once installed, Family Connection guides the family website administrator through a simple two-page setup process. The web application restricts access

no one cares about i18n (was [OT]: Asking questions on this list)
Do most others in the community agree with this statement? It seems to me that i18n is: 1. Actually important to many people 2. Not really the difficult to implement in concept 3. Something that people like to point out about Rails to say it''s not ready foir "Enterprise" It seems to be that a big part of Rails is encouraging people to do things the "Right Way",

Please release samba-2.0.7 and SWAT i18n
I belong to Samba Users Group Japan and maintain Samba 2.0.5a Japanized version. It's only l10n'ed Samba , but is used widely in Japan. And now we are planning to release next Samba Japanized version. But Samba 2.0.6 is half i18n'ed and more difficult to do l10n than 2.0.5a and as we said to Mr. Allison on 18th Dec. 1999 in Japan, the i18n of current SAMBA_2_0 branch works well, so we

Translation wine documentation to other languages
Sorry for crossposting initial message to both lists. I think the topic may be interesting for both - users and developers. Any volunteers to help to translate the documentation to languages other than English? This is very big job, so there can be more than one person, working on the same language. Among responses to my call for volunteers I got response from Pedro Restrepo suggesting his help
