30kbps/22khz stereo, which I think would only be possible with managed
bitrates, would sound worse than mono. At these bitrates, stereo is
luxury you cannot afford. I think most listeners would not even notice
they were listening to mono

Based on the OddCastDSP status screen, I'm getting averages of around
30k in mono, about 42k in stereo. 30k is likely too high for 33.6
modems but don't most people use 56k modems these days? Most
connections are around 48k I believe.

dare to compare -- live streams: ogg/WMA
hello all!
After having read http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/listen.html and
listened to the examples on that very educational page, I decided to
augment the info.
This example is more simple, it involves the comparision between two
streams of the same radio station, FranceInter (a station of Radio
France in Paris).
The ogg stream is running at around 30 kbps/11 kHz in stereo. The WMA
stream

OddCastDSP & SQRSoft crossfader problem
I've not had a reply on the OddSock forum so I'll try here.
I am attempting to use the OddCastDSP Winamp2 plugin via the (free)
SQRSoft Advanced Crossfading output plugin
(http://www.sqrsoft.com.ar/en/plugins.html). This is necessary to
provide intelligent crossfading which sounds very professional. I've
not heard of any other crossfading algorithm that works so well. It
uses the

Sorry for the long rave.

dare to compare -- live streams: ogg/WMA
hello,
I like your point here .. it's difficult to make such a comparision,
since yacast.fr choosed to stream like that. Why did they choose to
stream like that? That's beyond me, since Radio France has a budjet of
millions.
The point of this comparision was to show why is Radio France doing and
paying for something like this? Me, with cheap computers which were
had no more value (well,

skipping at change of song
I think this may be an oddcast issue but I'm not sure.
I've been streaming for a few days now and I've noticed when listening to the stream that at the change of every song the stream skips ahead slightly. It appears to occur when the metadata for the song title etc is being sent. For me this is a few seconds before the actual change of track since I'm using the SQRSoft

It is difficult to test this because the metadata is sent when each track is
silent so there is no audible skipping while no sound is present. I had
almost resigned to blaming the crossfader when it happened again (without
the crossfader). I have a very short

make lo-fi sound as good as RealAudio?
Can someone who really knows the Ogg command-line encoder, help recommend the best setting for 33.6k modem stereo music streaming?
(56k doesn't count cuz many people's 56k modems don't work at a full 56k, and I want them to be able to surf CD Baby at the same time as listening. 2 minutes / 120 seconds of audio should be about 400k.)
I'm at my wit's end: tried everything I

OddCastDSPv2 + Winamp 2.91 + SQRSoft crossfader
Hey Oddsock
I couldn't find your email address so sorry for posting to the list.
I know we've had a similar discussion in the past but I'm hoping
something can be arranged to solve this problem. I've just tried your
new OddCastv2 (for Winamp2) with the SQRSoft crossfader hoping that the
old problem had been overcome, however, it is much worse. Winamp simply

ices2/icecast2 on a pen 100
hello,
I got icecast2 and ices2 going on an old Pen 100 box. It's streaming a
lecture given by Richard Stallman at the University of Aberystwyth in
June 2002.
The files are found on http://www.6809.org.uk/audio/
I had put the sample rate down to 24000, as the Pen 100 seem not to be
able to handle anything about that. According ps aux, ices is taking 91
percent cpu. The box is working just

Is stereo vs. mono, and 22khz vs. 11khz even a fair comparison?
22khz vs. 11khz: 22khz, by definition, gives the 22khz stream much
more frequency range and *opportunity* to sound clearer.

Dummy soundcard driver for Windows (OT)
We want to setup multiple streams using multiple copies of
Winamp/SQRSoft crossfader/OddCast. We are guessing that somewhere
between 16 and 24 streams may be supported on one dual-processor PC.
However, rather than sending the output of all the streams to a
soundcard (which may cause problems?), I thought it should be possible
to send the output to a dummy soundcard driver. I was sure one

You can only select one output plugin in Winamp and that needs to the
the SQRSoft one, not the Null output plugin. The audio needs to pass

Crossfader for ices 0.3
FYI, I've added a crossfader to the ices0 trunk in subversion:
http://svn.xiph.org/icecast/trunk/ices0
It requires LAME support (of course). To use it, either pass -C <secs>
on the command line, or add a <Crossfade>secs</Crossfade> node to the
Playlist section of the config file. Reencoding must also be enabled
on your stream.
NOTE: the crossfader can't resample, so all
