ogg and mp3
For your "non-technical" listeners, both WinAmp 2 and 3 support OGG. And it's
free, as I'm sure you know.
Challenge them to listen to the difference too. Once they hear how much
better OGG sounds at the lower bitrates, I'm sure they won't mind switching
over.
And you might as well try to force their hands away from Micro$oft's Windows
Media Player, if

the problem ?

suggestion: add mp3 support to ices2
don't forget about streamTranscoder . it works well ., i actually have all
ogg archives , and when one is played , i have scripts to auto-transcode
an mp3 compatible stream for those who are not in the know .
(http://theDV8network.com for examples )
and http://transcoder.sourceforge.net for a link to the transcoder site (
i think )

creating live mp3-stream
hi!
Currently I'm using icecast1 and darkice to send a live-stream ... now I
updateted icecast2 ... but is there a way to create 2 different MP3 streams
(with 2 different qualities) using a streaming client? ices2 would be great but
it only supports ogg :-( As real radiostation we have to use MP3 because most
auf the windows playeres still don't support ogg ... :-((

OT: "The Ignorance of Crowds" (was: OT Slightly: )
I see what Dean means about how Digium/Asterisk might have struck a
balance between "the cathedral and the bazaar" antipodes of the SW
development world. Nicholas Carr's "The Ignorance of Crowds" finally
states his "politics" when it says "When you move from the bazaar to the
cathedral, it?s best to leave your democratic ideals behind."

icecast2, ogg, mp3, etc
Hi,
Just wanted to clarify, can icecast2 not read OR broadcast any mp3, or
can it just not broadcast mp3 (but still play from a playlist)? I know the
quality would be dropped if it had to reencode them though.
And what's up with that POS Winamp3, it doesn't even play gg streams?!?
I use xmms, but we have winamp3 on a demo computer, it just sits and keeps
prebuffering. I need something

Setting Up A Master-Slave Relay Problem
i can say more .. but what i've done is have ices/icecast run on the
studio machine . i've got scripts to handle the start/stop of the show ,
and this then also triggers a single stream relayed to the main network .
and this could be further altered to run a transcode session on the main
server ( to create a lower quality ogg or mp3, etc )
(check out http://theDV8network.com , tho i

hello every0ne , it's ad0n from theDV8network.com .
i've been hearing of more and more people in my community who are having
troubles connecting to our netw0rk . in most cases , wind0ws media player
or realone is stealing the associations ; and even if they've installed
winamp , the stream doesn't l0ad .
i think , at least for the first-time listeners , i need to add mp3
support

Apparently, you haven't tried Icecast2-alpha, yet. YP should work on
Icecast2's side, but my understanding is that the current directory

OT: whats your opinion of ODDSOCK streamTranscoder?
This is all happening on a box with:
Win 2k SP3
512K RAM
1.2 GHZ Celeron
The PC has noother load...all its doing is downsampling an MP3 stream to
lower bitrates.
I'm using the LAME_ENC.DLL with streamTranscoder. There is no version number
tagged on the lame_enc.dll, but the file is dates July 2002.
When I refer to "skipped and popped and dropped" I am referring to your

Best way downsample stream from 128 to 56 on the server?
Hi!
We want to over our stream in better quality (128 or 256) - but we still have
listeners using ISDN ... what's the best way to create a 56'er stream from the
128er send to the server?
The downsampling has to run on the debian streaming server.

OT: whats your opinion of ODDSOCK streamTranscoder?
What is everyones opinion and expierience with using ODDSOCK
streamTranscoder to downsample mp3 streams?
I tried it on Windows 2000 and then compared it against shoutCAST DSP
plugin. It sucked. It skipped and popped and cut off the first 1/2 second of
each track and dropped. It sucked, while shoutCast DSP was flawless.
What attracted to me to streamTranscoder was you don't have to run an MP3

streaming ogg and mp3 on the same machine
I have been able to successfully stream ogg vorbis as both a playlist
and as a live stream off my icecast2 server here using port 8000. Works
great.
I can also stream MP3 live audio using darkice and icecast2 off the same
box using port 8001.
But I have been unable to create a situation where I can stream *both"
ogg and mp3 off the same machine. I have even created a new icecast
directory to
