selected for the great NETVC project. It complicates a little the future of the nhw codec, and it is furthermore nearly to end of life, with more than 3 years on the Theora channel without catching attention. I still think that the NHW codec could be useful for portable devices, as it is very fast with a low power consumption, and with more neatness/sharpness.If you are developing such a project

NHW Image codec
Hello, Just a quick update. From the last communication I had, I think now the nhw codec has not been selected for the great NETVC project. It complicates a little the future of the nhw codec, and it is furthermore nearly to end of life, with more than 3 years on the Theora channel without catching attention. I still think that the NHW codec could be useful for portable devices, as it is very fast

NHW Project - lower quality settings
I don't mind at all. I imagine there are more people like me out there who have been following your work, but haven't said anything. I agree that a series of pages explaining how things work may lead to more contributions. At the very least it would lead to more people being better educated on how wavelets work in image compression. But, this is your project, if you don't have the

NHW Project - neatness metrics
Hello all, Finally find some time to get back to the NHW Project.I was thinking about making a technology demo, and I wanted to highlight the uniqueness of the NHW codec that is neatness/sharpness preserving or enhancement. With my eyes, I can see that the NHW codec has more neatness/sharpness than the other codecs (x265, x264, WebP, Rududu, JPEG,...), but for a demo there must be objective

NHW Project - lower quality settings
Hello, I have re-tested -l4 high compression setting and it's clear that it lacks of precision on degraded, rather blurred images. So I don't know if it is a good idea to base the other lower quality settings (-l5,-l6,...) on -l4 setting.I have tested the NHW codec against x265, x264, Daala, WebP, Rududu, DLI and it's clear that at high compression these very good codecs have more

NHW Project - lower quality settings
Hi David! Many thanks for your very encouraging and kind feedback!!! (Hope you don't mind that I made your post public on the Theora channel). I try to be the more sincere as I can in my posts. Some people suggested me to make demo pages to explain how the codec works step by step, and I realize that it would be good, because certainly it will show that the NHW codec is not that complex and

NHW Project - website, demo pages, algorithms dev,...
Hello, So thanks to helpful forum feedbacks, I know now that I have to create a website for the NHW Project, make demo pages of the technology, and all that with good visual design. It won't be such easy for me... For example, I can easily supply a description, explanation of the different steps of the algorithm, I can supply images encoded at mid-compression with NHW, x265, WebP, JPEG,...

NHW Image codec - subjective quality
Hello, Yes, that's right, I had the remark that if I say that the NHW codec would have more neatness/sharpness, this must be also accompanied with objective measure. But the neatness/sharpness measure is quite complex to define, and implement. But at classical visual review step, I would find that the NHW codec would be less blurred (maybe PSNR would like blur?...) with more

NHW Project - some update
I think Apple is somehow "attached" to the MPEG group. They control the "pools" too. Your codec sounds great. Google could -- if they wanted to -- use it but they have Web^M and webP. Look to Asia. Asus has just launched a new phone. ?? On Mon, Jul 9, 2018, 3:14 PM Raphael Canut <nhwcodec at gmail.com> wrote: > Hello, > > I don't have advanced on the NHW

NHW Project - Xiph.org
Hello, I don't have really advanced on -l5 and -l6 high compression settings, but I know what bits to remove while still keeping a good image neatness/sharpness, I just need to translate these ideas into lines of code, which is not that easy... I realize now that the NHW Project was really lacking high compression settings, and now that I have started to add high compression, it really gives

NHW Project - high compression -l4 setting
Hello, For those interested, I have added a -l4 high compression setting to the NHW codec ( http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ ).This setting is very experimental, I have boosted the sharpness for this one, but it can lack of precision on low contrast areas. This setting still maintains a good neatness and when it will be validated, I will then make a new 0.1.4 version for the NHW Project. High

NHW Image codec - Compression Performance
Hello, Definitely not any (constructive) comments on the NHW Image codec? According to my tests, it can compare good with reference codecs like x264 intra and WebP. Yes, the codec is still experimental and is optimized for visual (subjective) evaluation, not PSNR.Its main feature is again that it would have a little more neatness/sharpness and a little less precision (residual coding is applied

NHW Project - new -l13 very high compression quality setting
Hello, I wanted to let you know that I have released a new -l13 very high compression quality setting for the NHW Project (and we can still save 2.5KB per .nhw compressed file). I find this -l13 quality setting very competitive (I will maybe use some of its processing to improve -l12 setting).Compared to x265 (HEVC), I have tested on 15 rather good quality images, and I visually prefer the

NHW Project and wavelet codecs
Hello, In my last post, I seemed to say that there were no directional wavelet transforms that would give improvement to the NHW codec, but are directional wavelets an active research field today? I have also seen some recent patents on advanced and improved SPIHT, and I am a little surprised that there is no "up-to-date" state-of-the-art wavelet codec.Rududu in April 2008 was the last

NHW Project - AOM AV1 comparison
Hi Silvia, Thank you very much for your answer! Your opinion is much appreciated. Your advice is wisdom, but very quickly to rectify or precise my situation, I am finishing a 2-year job contract and there will maybe be a "vacation" period before the next contract (if I find one), so I would like to invest this time for the NHW Project, but that's right that image/video compression,

NHW codec - precision
Hello, No advance for now on the NHW codec, I am still working on a new quantization scheme to scale down the compression ratios but without luck... Any advice, idea is very welcome.I will also have to correctly code the wavelet filerbank and process on rows and columns and suppress the image transposition (this is for long overdue)... will win few cycles... there are other parts to speed up (in

NHW Codec - some progress
Hello, I have some progress for the NHW codec. I recently talked with a researcher that has some interest in the NHW codec. He has studied several directional wavelet transforms (notably HWD directional transform), and he came to the conclusion that directional transforms will bring marginal improvement, not significant in the case of my compression codec. This also confirms what I have read from

NHW Project - some update
Hello, I don't have advanced on the NHW Project this past month, but I have definitely validated its characteristics and this new version. The NHW Codec preserves or enhances image neatness and sharpness, which translates that on good quality images the NHW Codec is globally better than HEVC, and on degraded (with blur, artifacts) images it is worse than HEVC because it lacks of precision. I
