ext3 Overhead
Hello!
I'm using a CompactFlash as storage device. Since those CF cards only have
limited write cycles (CF does wear-levelling by itself, but you don't want
to write too many timet so the card) i was wondering by what a factor the
journaling of ext3 increases the write accesses to the CompactFlash
compared to ext2. Thanks a lot already for your help!

[Off-topic] Battery Backed NVRAM for journals ...
I've seen this come up on occassion, but every NAS OEM that uses
NVRAM I've ever talked to over the last 18 months won't tell me
anything about their equipment nor their suppliers. Recently, Micro
Memory contacted me. Is anyone here using their products?
FYI, their 64-bit PCI 128MB-1GB NVRAM board is here:

The sad state of samba 4 adaption for home/small business routers.
Hi,
i would like to inspire a discussion on why samba4 has nearly no adaption on
home/small business routers firmware.
I recently switched from my old Asus-N16 running tomato to a WRT-1200AC and
was researching potential firmware's that i could run. We have a new
synology disk-station at work that runs Samba 4.x and it works great. So i
was surprised to notice that 3 years after the 4.0

How to create EXT3 file system image from directories?
Hi there,
Is there a utility to create an EXT3 file system image from directories?
Just like the mkfs.jffs2 which creates a JFFS2 file system image from
directories?
The "mke2fs -j" only creates the bare bone file system, what I want is to
build an image with pre-built content.
Thanks,
Debbie

zfs_nocacheflush, nvram, and root pools
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
hi,
i have a system connected to an external DAS (SCSI) array, using ZFS. the
array has an nvram write cache, but it honours SCSI cache flush commands by
flushing the nvram to disk. the array has no way to disable this behaviour. a
well-known behaviour of ZFS is that it often issues cache flush commands to
storage in order to ensure data

[XCP] Install to Flash Media
Well, now that I''ve figured out that network booting XCP is not really
going to be feasible, I''m moving on to my next option: flash media
installation. The systems that I purchased have SDHC slots on them, so
I figured I''d attempt to install XCP to one of these cards. I had
already read that there''s a minimum disk size in the installer

Help on ext3 file system corruption issue
Hi All,
I m a novice developer of Linux applications. Recently I faced a file
system corruption. (I guess)
I have a Kernel 2.4.7-10 with ext3 file system in compact flash. The
system was up for 3 months and was running with average load conditions.
One fine day, it just started sending kernel messages on the serial
console. The message was like this.
EXT3-fs error (device ide0(3,2)):

"power outage"-save / like embedded systems
I would like to setup a small system based on CentOS6
"power outage"-save as possible. The hardware will be
switch off by pulling the plug.
To accomplishing this goal, I would mounting some fs parts
readonly (e.g. /usr) and thinking about tmpfs for volatile
parts (e.g. lock, run under var). Additionally "optimize"
some vm.dirty_* kernel- and fs/ext4 parameters.

Sveasoft Alchemy QOS
I just bought two new Linksys WRT54G routers. Sveasoft has loaded Linux on
this router and included a bunch of Linux tools, one of which is Bandwidth
Management. The QoS aspect of this is supposed to be much more granular
than the previous solution (Wonder Shaper).
I have not been able to find any suggestions for how to impliment QoS
(Bandwidth Management) using the web interface of Alchemy.

Snom side car annoyance
Has anyone got this annoying sidecar to illuminate when users are on the
phone?
In my function key settings I have:
Context: Active
Type: Extension
Number: <sip:4000@serve.address.com;user=phone> (4000 is the extension I
want to see/dial on the key).
I can press the key and it will dial the extension, it just won't
illuminate when the user is on the phone or on DND Since I have

isolinux + cloop
Hi. I am trying to build a bootable linux CD using isolinux and a cloop
image. I am a bit lost right now.
What I have done is built a custom distro on a seperate partition on my
hard drive. I can boot to it with Grub no problem. I've added the
ioslinux directory with isolinux.bin, isolinux.cfg, a kernel (with
initrd, loopback, iso support), and an initrd file.
My next mission is to some
