Time To Pick the Mongrel BUGS Mascot!
Bradley Taylor shot me this *goldmine* of ugly ugly ugly dogs: http://www.sonoma-marinfair.org/uglydogvote.shtml I *have* to use one of these for the Mongrel BUGS Mascot. He''ll go on our bug list page and replace the little beetles on the left. Pick the dog you think best represents a lovable but defective pooch and reply to this with your +1. Recommendation: Is Apache Really Serving Files?
Hi All, I''ve been running into quite a few people who''ve claimed that they have Apache (or lighttpd) serving static files, but then they paste in error messages from Mongrel that shows not only Mongrel not serving the files, but Rails is serving them. Everyone using apache should run this very simple test: 1) Setup your apache so that it point at one backend. 2) Start your

How do you use Mongrel?
Hey folks, I''m working on the Mongrel book with Zed, and wanted to get some feedback from the core users (this list) about how they use Mongrel. That sounds a bit vague, but I''m interested in hearing things about frustrating problems / workaround, preferred configurations, if you have a particular way you set up / store your config files when developing / deploying an

[ADV] "Mongrel: Serving, Deploying, and Extending Your Ruby Applications" BOOK
Time for some all time pimpage folks. Me and Matt Pelletier wrote a small PDF book on Mongrel entitled: "Mongrel: Serving, Deploying, and Extending Your Ruby Applications" since we really wanted you to know what it was about. It''s published by Addison Wesley Professional, has just over 100 pages of goodness, and is available for $14.99 at: http://safari.oreilly.com/0321483502

I assume some of you have run into this error before when trying to run mongrel on port 80 (or another port < 1024) in OSX: $ mongrel_rails start -p 80 ** Starting Mongrel listening at 0.0.0.0:80 /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/mongrel-0.3.14/lib/mongrel/tcphack.rb:12:in `initialize_without_backlog'': Permission denied - bind(2) (Errno::EACCES) from

Expert feedback needed
Hello list, Some time ago I was looking for apache (as non balanced proxy) + mongrel configurations. Almost everybody seemed to use similar approaches (one of these could be found @ mongrel.rubygorge.org docs) with mod_rewrite. I don''t use proxy_balancer because I don''t need it at the moment (my site has pretty low traffic). This is apache configuration that I''m using

Rails Deployment Book
I''ve been mulling over an idea for a book covering Ruby on Rails application deployment. Obvious topics include using Mongrel by itself and with Apache/Lighttpd, load balancers, memcached, and Capistrano. What other topics would you like to see covered in such a book? Cheers, -- Dave Murphy (Schwuk) http://schwuk.com

Apache 2.2, Mongrel and #caches_page
Hi ! I''m no expect when it comes time to configure Apache. I just enabled page caching in my Rails app, and am now looking at making Apache serve the cached files instead of calling into Rails. I know Mongrel is able to serve cached files if it finds them, but I''d like Apache to do it. Looking at .htaccess, there is this section: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^$ index.html

Question for Zed
Zed, I purchased your book and was reading through it. On page 25 it states: "Mongrel will give precedence to the parameter values in the config file over those in the command line." I was wondering why this is not the other way around, preference given to the command line options. Thanks, ~Wayne

Mongrel as Win32 service for a camping app?
As subject line, basically... http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/docs/win32.html describes how to install Service support for Mongrel on Win32. But it seems to be focussed on providing a way of running Rails apps. If it is possible at all, can you provide hints or refer to documentation that explains how to run apps that use other frameworks, like Camping, as Services please? Is it written up online,

Mongrel and Sandbox
Z-Man, DHH recently said: "And [_why''s] latest work on sandbox looks stellar. Making it drop-dead easy to run multiple Rails applications in the same Mongrel process without conflicts. Thumbs up to both him and Matz for getting Sandbox on track for inclusion with the next Ruby release." Does that mean what I think it means - that one or more Mongrel processes may one day be

Mongrel HTTP Library 0.2.0 (Fast And RubyForgified)
Hi Everyone, I''m happy to announce the 0.2.0 release of Mongrel -- the fastest HTTP 1.1 library Ruby has yet. http://mongrel.rubyforge.org/ -- ruby docs lame page. http://rubyforge.org/projects/mongrel/ -- project page. Special thanks to Tom Copland for setting up my RubyForge goodness, and to Why for kicking in time to get the Camping examples up to snuff. This release should

Mongrel 0.3.6 -- Win32 Service/Rails Real Good
Hello Folks, This release of Mongrel should make the win32 folks go crazy. Thanks to Luis Lavena it supports a full service system for installing any Rails app as a service. This lets you start your rails apps from either the command line or the Service console. Stopping is still a bit problematic but we hope to have that solved in the next release. You win32 folks should probably send Luis

deployment survey
Hello Mongrels, Building on the last messages about Fastthread, can we get a detailed survey of the different ways people are deploying their applications? It will help with near-future Mongrel development. Please include the following things: * Framework, if any (Camping, Merb, Rails, Nitro, Ramaze, IOWA, Rack...) * Mongrel version * Mongrel handlers used (rails, dirhandler, camping,

mongrel stops responding after period of no use
I just moved from apache2/fcgi to apache2.2/mongrel and everything seems to work great except for 2 issues, one being major and one minor. the major issue i am experiencing is that after a period of time where my rails apps are not used, typically overnight, the mongrel processes become unresponsive. I currently have 3 apps running behind an apache2.2 proxy. every morning when i come in to

Mongrel Web Server 0.3.11 -- Edge Rails and Win32 Compliant
Hello Folks, This is the big release of Mongrel that''s been in the works for a while now (well, like a week). It is chock full of changes and features, but mostly it syncs up the Win32 side of things, and validates that Edge Rails works without problems. It also features a more extensive and useful example of the GemPlugins called mongrel_config. First the usual stuff for people

mongrel cluster issues, plain old mongrel OK
I just created a test rails app, and am having very wierd issues with mongrel cluster. Here''s what I''m doing: rails test sudo chown -R mongrel:mongrel test cd test sudo mongrel_rails \ cluster::configure -e production \ -p 8000 -N 3 -a 127.0.0.1 --user mongrel \ --group mongrel It correctly writes the mongrel_cluster.yml file to the config directory.
