Value of SET_STRING_ELT() must be a 'CHARSXP' not a 'character' & 'getEncChar' must be called on a CHARSXP
Hello, I have list of 600K lists, each sublist a list of two elements, the first a character, the second a list of six named elements, some characters some numrics. LISTA (600K) (:= h) |__ List of two elements |__ Character |__ Named List of 6 elements (characters and numerics) This works, sip <- lapply(h,function(r) r[[2]][['sip']]) but I wish to unlist this

base::order breaking change in R-devel
Hi R developers, There seems to be breaking change in base::order on Windows in R-devel. Code below yields different results on R 4.0.0 and R-devel (2020-05-22 r78545). I haven't found any info about that change in NEWS. Was the change intentional? Sys.setlocale("LC_CTYPE","C") Sys.setlocale("LC_COLLATE","C") x1 = "fa\xE7ile" Encoding(x1) =

Unable to build with working iconv support on Solaris9/x86
Hi all, Have had a frustrating time trying to get R 2.5.1 running happily on Solaris9/x86, the problems seem to stem mainly from libiconv support. After a couple of hours of experimenting, I came across the following combination, note that iconv (the program, but not the library) exists in the Solaris base system, I've manually installed the full GNU distribution in

error unserializing ascii format (v2 or v3)
I ran into an interesting error unserializing a file created with ascii=TRUE: R 3.5.1 (Windows or Linux): > unserialize(serialize(list(raw=as.raw(c(39,41))), NULL, version=2, ascii=TRUE)) Error in unserialize(serialize(list(raw = as.raw(c(39, 41))), NULL, version = 2, : ReadItem: unknown type 29, perhaps written by later version of R The same error happens when the

What is the fastest way to see what are in an RData file?
Currently, I load the RData file then ls() and str(). But loading the file takes too long if the file is big. Most of the time, I only interested what the variables are in the the file and the attributes of the variables (like if it is a data.frame, matrix, what are the colnames/rownames, etc.) I'm wondering if there is any facility in R to help me avoid loading the whole file.

R 2.9.2 crashes when sorting latin1-encoded strings
Hi everyone! I think I stumbled over a bug in the latest R 2.9.2 patched for OS X: > R version 2.9.2 Patched (2009-09-24 r49861) > i386-apple-darwin9.8.0 When I try to sort latin1-encoded character vectors, R sometimes crashes with a segmentation fault. I'm running OS X 10.5.8 and have observed this behaviour both with the i386 and x86_64 builds, in the R.app GUI as well as on

Error: ReadItem: unknown type 98, perhaps written by later version of R
Hi, I am running a large number of jobs (thousands) in parallel (linux OS 64bit), R version 2.14.1 (2011-12-22), Platform: x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu (64-bit). Up to yesterday everything ran fine with jobs in several blocks (block1, block2 etc) of submission. They are sent to an LSF platform to handle the parallel submission. Today I see that only one of the blocks (the 19) has not finished

error unserializing ascii format (v2 or v3)
I see this on MacOS as well, so likely not platform dependent. A little more diddling to try to narrow it down: > unserialize(serialize(as.raw(1), NULL, version=2, ascii=TRUE)) [1] 30 > unserialize(serialize(list(as.raw(1)), NULL, version=2, ascii=TRUE)) [[1]] [1] 30 > unserialize(serialize(list(raw=as.raw(1)), NULL, version=2, ascii=TRUE)) Error in unserialize(serialize(list(raw =

Deep copy of factor levels?
Hi It seems that selecting an element of a factor will copy its levels (Ubuntu 13.04, R 3.0.2). Below is the output of a script that creates a factor with 10000 elements and then calls as.list() on it. The new object seems to use more than 700 MB, and inspection of the levels of the individual elements of the list suggest that they are distinct objects. Perhaps some performance gain could

I have run into a problem loading a just saved R object using R-devel. I have been saving and loading this particular type of R object for a long while and never ran into this problem. Lines between panels in lattice
Hello, I have a multi-page display each consisting of two-panels above each other. I need to draw a line from the top panel to bottom panel. Using current.vpTree() i find that "plot1.panel.1.2.vp" and "plot1.panel.1.1.vp" are the top and bottom ones respectively. I am using the following code(inspired by Paul Murrell's R Graphics) to draw a line. (All the

ALTREP: Design concept of alternative string
Hi Gabriel, Thanks for your explanation, I totally understand that it is almost impossible to change the data structure of STRSXP. However, what I'm proposing is not about changing the internal representation, but rather about how we design and use the ALTREP API. I might do not state the workarounds clearly as English is not my first language. Please let me explain them again in detail.

eval using a environment X but resultsin .GlobalEnv
Hello, Suppose I have an expression, E, which accesses some variables present in an environment V. I do this via eval(E,envir=V) however all assignments end up in V. I would like the results of assignments in E to end up in the .GlobalEnv ? Or at least the calling environment. Is there a quick way to this instead of iterating over all objects E and assigning into .GlobalEnv? Thank you Saptarshi

Question about CHARSXP and garbage collection
Hi, I had a technical question about CHARSXP and garbage collection and couldn't find the answer in the R manual. The question is this. Are CHARSXP garbage collected like any other object, despite being part of the CHARSXP cache? i.e. is the cache being cleaned by garbage collection regularly and therefore, when I am in C code, do I need to protect a CHARSXP? Thanks! Holger [[alternative

Internal error in 'ls' for pathological environments (PR#14035)
nchar(with(list(2),ls())) gives an internal error. This is of course a peculiar call (no names in the list), but the error is not caught cleanly. It is not clear from the documentation whether with(list(2)...) is allowable; if it is not, it should presumably give an error. If it is, then ls shouldn't have problems with the resulting environment. > qq <- with(list(2),ls())

Writing a Long across the network?
Hello, I have to write single Long to a server written in java. The server passes the input as in.readLong() // it expects to receive 8 bytes In Python, i can do it by sending struct.pack( "!q", value) However, I have tried this writeBin(length(x),con=conn, endian="big") #conn opened in binary But the response on the server side is wrong, eg. 1 is received as

Lattice and Axis height
Hello, My plots consist of 2 rows, 1 column, many pages I've managed to selectively turn of strips for the bottom panel and roll my own strip for the top par.strip.text = list(lines = c(0,3),cex=0.6) I have my own custom prepanel function too. What i'd like to do is turn off the x-axis for the top panel (since on a given page the xlim is same for both top and bottom panel, but the

Hello, I was trying this bit of code (i know it is an extreme case) g=function(r){ if(r==1) return(list(x=1)) else return(list(x=g(r-1))) } For z=g(500), the code runs but when I print z i.e >> z I get <environment: R_GlobalEnv> *** caught bus error *** address 0x1, cause 'non-existent physical address' Possible actions: 1: abort (with core dump, if enabled)
