Feedback on Listing at teachingopensource.org
Hello Xapian Developers, I am writing with feedback on your Help Wanted listing at teachingopensource.org, specifically http://www.teachingopensource.org/index.php/Help_Wanted:_Xapian Overall, I think your project listing looks very well done. On your ideas page, you haven't done a lot to sell/market each idea. Why is development of this specific project going to improve Xapian overall? How

Bad mime type reported for flac file
Hi all, It has recently come to my attention that the linux "file" utility reports some (but not all) of my flac files as having a mime type of "audio/mpeg". Obviously this is incorrect, but why is it reported as such? I've cut and paste a few commands below from my shell to illustrate what I'm seeing: black:/media/mildred/music/Tool/10,000 Days$ file -i *

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Is the app at http://possereg.teachingopensource.org still being used? If so, can we migrate that to the main TOS server? If not, I'd like to take it down as part of a server migration we're doing for theopensourceway.org host. Thanks - Karsten - -- Karsten 'quaid' Wade .^\ CentOS Doer of Stuff

mtext uses the typographical descender to align text
<> Hello One sometimes (quite often really ) marvel at the choice of defaults in R's graphic engine. For some obscure reason, mtext uses the typographical descender (bottom of letters) to align text. That is: "gG" will end up slightly higher that "GG". Depending on the font, "Q" might end up higher than "O". (for explanation of baseline

floating point question
Does anyone know precisely what is different about the arithmetic and/or storage of double precision floating point to produce the following differences between the Sun and Windows versions (Splus 6 on the same Windows 2000 machine gives the same results as Solaris)? R 1.6.1, Sun Solaris, gcc + an old Sun f77 > options(digits=20) > 1+(1/2^53+1/2^106) [1] 1 > 1+(1/2^53+1/2^105) [1]

Firefox3 for CentOS4 -- dependency on evolution28 packages?
I'd been putting off installing the FX3 packages because of some extensions I use that don't have upgrades. [*] However, when FX1.5 crashed on me today I decided to finally go ahead. Fired up yum and I'm told I have to install a slew of evolution28 library packages in order to install the firefox package. Why? I removed evolution from my system for a reason, and I'd just as

Preservation of short and long filenames in Windows 9x with Samba
I have combed the Internet for an answer to this question and I have not found it. Here's the problem. As some may know, trying to copy files with xcopy32/explorer on a Windows machine to another drive or other Windows machine DOES NOT imply that both long and short filenames will be copied exactly. eg. long filename : thisisalongfilename.txt (in Windows) short filename: THISIS~1.TXT (at

R-beta: Suggestion for a very minor change to Rd.sty
Dear R gurus and users, for some functions in some of the many packages available for R, with the current definition of \Header given in Rd.sty, the heading bumps into the surrounding words in documentation printed via LaTeX. To alleviate this minor typographical mishap, I'd like to suggest the change to R/doc/manual/Rd.sty included below as a context diff. With this minor diff applied, the

Hey Folks... I get the feeling that this has probably been covered before, but I could not find the answer in the "back issues" of the mailing list so here goes. I am running a linux machine with samba loaded. One of the other folks that I work with is running NT Workstation 4.0, Service Pack 3. I want him to be able to use a plotter on my linux box. bug in pnorm (PR#699)
Full_Name: James Michael Rath Version: all (I think) OS: doesn't matter Submission from: (NULL) (129.116.226.162) The code for pnorm in R was adapted from a Fortran library published in the ACM TOMS journal. The published version had a typographical error, though, which was pointed out in a second article published three years after the original. The error was that a macro/variable named

SVN migration status
It looks like the Subversion migration is working. The CVS repository is still there, but in read-only mode. However, the SVN repository preserves the version history of the CVS repository, albeit organized slightly differently. For an introduction to Subversion, this online book is essential: http://svnbook.red-bean.com/ It is written by some of the Subversion authors. The only drawback I

YAPQ (Yet Another Patent Question)
Looks like the mpeg gestapo are frantically at work cracking down on mpeg projects. Several important projects (tsunami mpeg, gogo, faac, etc) were shut down by the jack booted patent nazis. Since FhG, mpegla, etc plan to start charging royalties on everything even remotely mpeg-related very soon, I expect a lot of interest is going to shift to Vorbis. And soon thereafter, I expect FhG to attack
