Another CentOS 5 oddity: reboot and the X server fails to come up
I had to reboot my work machine today, and it came up in text mode (!). I did an init 5, but that had no effect (wrong command?). I killed the three gdm processes, and voila, X server mode. Where do I look to find out what is not right here? sound oddity on C6
I just encountered an oddity... it may have been this way for millennia :) but somehow I've never noticed it before... say I'm using X (which is pretty normal these days) and I have VLC playing a "radio" station. I do CTRL-ALT-Fx to switch to a text console THAT HAS NO ONE LOGGED IN on it, and voila: no sound! as soon as I log in, the audio returns. what gives here? --

Installed CentOS 5 today, question about an error I'm getting
So I did a fresh install today. Decided to go ahead and upgrade. Everything seems okay save for three problems. #1 - I get a message during boot saying that an Intel microcode update didn't work. Something about not being able to find /proc/microcode. #2 - I can't use the Firefox extension HTML Parser. Anyone use this. #3 - Off and on GDM crashes and I get dropped into a prompt. Any

lastlog oddity
This is very odd. I updated a user's workstation yesterday. This morning, I ran lastlog | grep -v Never, and it shows only another admin and myself, and that's from days ago, but not the user. It shows her as "Never logged in". Meanwhile, last does indeed show her logged in (though not today). Anyone have any ideas? mark

Another oddity - users get no ftp (no ftpd) on latest update from CentOS 5.0
The subject pretty much says it all. My ftp comes back with "ftp: ftp/tcp: unknown service" - unless I run it as root, in which case it works just fine. What's going on here? Did I screw up a setting of mine or something? Thanks. mhr -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:

Waking up X
I just finished installing CentOS 5 (again)... and I'm having trouble with my X config (I _think_). If I 'startx' then switch to a console (using CTRL+ALT+F*) and then back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7), 1/2 the time it comes back, the other half I get a black screen and I can never recover the session. X is still running (CTRL+ALT+Backspace kills it) but there seems to be some type of power

[LLVMdev] another SCEV surprise
When compile the following case and look at the SCEV analysis, I notice that the first two loops don't have a LoopInvariantBackedgeTakenCount (surprising) and the last one does (not surprising, except in the context of the first two examples). *void p4(int *A, int *B, long int n) {* * for (char i = 0; i < n; i++) {* * A[i + 2] = i;* * *B++ = A[i];* * }* *}* * * *void p5(int *A, int

Installation 2.7.1 [requires Perl >= 5.8.0]
Hi there, I am currently working in a research institute and I have only a reduced account. My aim is to install the New version of R under my own directory to prove the advantages of this version to my IT service to lead them to install it on the full server. So I download the last .tar.gz file I used "gunzip" and "tar -xf" without any problems (hopefully!) But when I

Search&replace string?
Hi there, I would like to know if it is possible to modify a text file with a R function. In fact I would like to know if a function "Search & Replace" exists. My problem is to create config files from a Base file in which I have to modify values of parameters. My Base File: #... #... Param1= V1_1 #... Param2 = V2_1 Param3 = V3_1 #... What I would like for each created file
