Wald test and frailty models in coxph
Dear R members,
I am new in using frailty models in survival analyses and am getting
some contrasting results when I compare the Wald and likelihood ratio
tests provided by the r output.
I am testing the survivorship of different sunflower interspecific
crosses using cytoplasm (Cyt), Pollen and the interaction Cyt*Pollen
as fixed effects, and sub-block as a random effect. I stratified

nls: Fitting two models at once?
Hello,
I'm still a newbie user and struggling to automate some analyses from
SigmaPlot using R. R is a great help for me so far!
But the following problem makes me go nuts.
I have two spectra, both have to be fitted to reference data. Problem: the
both spectra are connected in some way: the stoichiometry of coefficients
"cytf.v"/"cytb.v" is 1/2.

faster fsck ?
Hi,
we have CentOS ftp server (vsftpd) which has a lot of users who are writing and reading
a lot of small files from/into its own accounts (and other servers - using samba client - are
reading these files and putting them into outside database).
Since this server is under heavy load its availability is important.

Can't donwload mails with some attacchments
Hi.
Does anyone find the same problem with attachments bigger than few Ks?
The client (thunderbird) waits for the file to be downloaded. It can be
waiting for several minuts and tryies before having it from dovecot.
Can it be something against the lock of the file, the processes or
something else?
Any workaround or bugfix in the stable/alpha rel?
thanks.

How to do nonblocking writes to CIFS networkshares?
Hi!
I'm new to this mailing list, so please help out if I'm adressing the
wrong forum. :)
I'm working on an application accessing a mounted networkshare. Under
normal circumstances there is no problem accessing reading and writing
to the networkshare using POSIX open(2)/read(2)/write(2) etc. However if
there is intermittent connectivity problems to the networkshare my

rpart results - problem after oversampling
Hi all,
I am trying to predict a target variable that takes values 0 or 1 using the rpart command. In my initial dataset I have few positive observations of the target variable; therefore I have oversampled the rare event by a multiple of 6 (i.e. from 762 to 4572).
However, in my results, I end up with a number of positives in one of the terminal nodes that is not divisible by 6. As I have the

increased core dumps with v2.2.7
Hi,
After upgrading to v2.2.7 yesterday, I am starting to get a larger number
of bugs occurring -- unfortunately I hadn't configured things to save core
dumps (now done).
But I am seeing things like:

27931 killed with signal 11 (core dumped)

Possible PDC security hole re/machine accounts
Hey all!
I was fiddling with some LDAP stuff for fun's sake, and I ran into this
strange situation. The situation occurred with both my stock Samba and
my modifications applied.
I had a Win2000 Advanced Server machine already joined into the domain
and working perfectly with PDC logons through the Samba server (v2.2.7,
LDAP-SAM backend, OpenLDAP 2.0.25).
While testing if the searches were

I have Samba v2.2.7 on Solaris 8. I have uploaded all the needed print
drivers and setup several printers using administrator. I edited the
'device settings', under printer/properties, to adjust memory and paper
trays etc.
When I login as a regular user on W2k client, the settings are
underintensified and I don't see the changes made earlier, only the default
settings. If I add the

Samba versus NFS/ftp
I ran some tests today, ftp'ing a 288MB file to the server was completed in
29.3 seconds, ~10 MB/sec.
This is 3 times faster than Samba! which needed 82 seconds using drag/drop
on W2K. NFS needed 39 seconds.
I have read the 'performance tuning' documents and have done all/most of
the changes they recommend but nothing appears to increase the speed.
We are running Solaris 8 with

Installing printer drivers
Hi,
I'm trying to copy printer driver files to the server in a way that workstations can
install from the server just by right-clicking on the printer icon and choosing
"Install".
I created the [printers] share and created the W32X86, etc directories. In XP I
right-clicked on the printer icon and installed the drivers. It looked like it
worked. Looking at it from the linux side,
