Rubynation DC April 9-10
Just a note to remind everyone that the RubyNation conference is around the corner, less than one month away. We are getting close to sold out, so help us push this thing over the top! This year we have more (and better!) presentations, including a keynote presentation by the person who IMO really started all the fuss with Ruby and Rails, Dave Thomas. We also have a bunch of quality speakers

SF Beer & Pizza SIG - review and forecast
Wednesday''s Beer & Pizza SIG was attended by about a dozen Rubyists, plus one extremely well-dressed gentleman (no hacker he!) who was on the prowl for Rubyists to hire. Beer and Pizza (among other things) were consumed, Ruby (among other things) was discussed, and everyone appeared to have a good time. The upcoming SIG will, as announced previously, be held just up the street at

Registration now open for Silicon Valley Ruby Conference
Hi everyone -- Registration is now open for the upcoming Silicon Valley Ruby Conference, April 22-23. This event is a co-production of SDForum and Ruby Central, Inc. Some FAQ: Is this the same as RubyConf? No, it''s an event unto itself, and quite a substantial one! Is it only for Silicon Valley people? No. It''s got some regional Ruby community emphasis --

NYC Ruby Job Fair ‹ April 25th
=== NYC Ruby Job Fair -- April 25th The NYC Ruby meetings lately have looked a lot like middle school dances. On one side of the room is people saying, "Gee, I wish I could work full-time doing Ruby or Ruby on Rails." On the other side of the room are companies saying, "Wow, those Ruby people sure look cute, I wish they would all come work for me." The music is playing, the

Generating barcodes (as gif/jpg)
Hello Rubyists, I need to generate barcodes (in UPC and codabar symbologies) and would like to know if anyone has done this with Ruby. From what I can tell, it would be possible to use the gnu-barcode [1] or barcodewriter [2] to generate a PostScript, then through RMagick (via GhostScript) take the file and create a GIF/JPG. These will really only be used for web display (to be printed

learning the R language (for those strong in Ruby)
I feel like I'm not firing at all cylinders with the R language, despite reading over the R Language Definition. Has anyone seen something like an "R for Rubyists" guide (i.e. teaching the R language for those who are more familar with Ruby)? Alternately, a book with lots of examples about how the R language itself works would be fantastic. -David

sort_link_helper and cross-controller partials
Hello Rubyists, I ran into a problem with sorting a table (rendered in a partial) using the sort_link_helper methods after I have submitted data and re-rendered the table through an AJAX request. The setup is a follows: The table is a shared partial of Controller1 and Controller2 accessible via "shared/table". The AJAX''ed sorting using the sort helper works all fine on

[OT] How to get a deal for INTL speakers?
This is pretty far off topic, but seeing as though it directly affects the upcoming Canada on Rails (http://canadaonrails.com) conference in April, I figure it kind of applies to Rails :) I need to find the best place to get discount tickets for the international speakers coming from Europe, and figure you guys would know where the best places are to get deals. I have checked klm.com, and

Call for speakers DevDays 2011 Sydney
DevDays Sydney - the Stack Overflow sponsored conference is near approaching http://devdays.stackoverflow.com/sydney/ The idea behind DevDays is a fast, high-bandwidth, fire hose tutorial on at least ten interesting concepts. You can read more about it here: http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2011/06/devdays-is-back/ We have already picked quite a few interesting talks but have a few slots left open!
