ActiveRecord validation messages not I18N-friendly and enforces grammar
ActiveRecord validation messages are currently not I18N-friendly.
Specifically, I''m referring to the fact that it enforces a certain
grammar, namely the beginning of the message must consist of the field
name. For example:
validates_presence_of :name, :message => "can''t be blank."
...generates the message "Name can''t be blank". This grammar

The {{key}} interpolation syntax in I18n messages is deprecated...
All,
Has anyone seen this - I am getting the following deprecation warning when
running my functional tests under rails 2.3.8 (just moved an app from 2.3.4
up to 2.3.8 in prep to move to Rails 3 --- if you think this problem is
solved in Rails 3 then let me know):
The {{key}} interpolation syntax in I18n messages is deprecated. Please use
%{key} instead.
I have isolated the problem to the

ActiveRecord override
Would really appreciate it if someone could tell me why this is happening:
I override ssn method of AR class so I can encrypt/decrypt to/from the db:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
def ssn=(value)
write_attribute(:borrower_ssn, Crypto.encrypt(self.encryption_key,
value))
write_attribute(:borrower_ssn_final_four, value[5,4])
end

Global text search (and replace) on MacVim?
Been trying out Macvim and I think I have covered most of what I used in
other editors except for how to handle global searches and replaces for text
in files (i.e. not looking for file names, but search and replace text
within all files below a specific directory). Can anyone who uses MacVim
tell me what they use for such tasks? I have been poking around and see
:grep as the main method, although

Customizing errors
Hello fellow Rails devs,
I had a slight problem with validation messages. I had a Post AR model
that has an :author_name attribute.
Now if a validation goes wrong, I would like the message to say: "Name
of author can''t be blank" as opposed to "author name can''t be blank".
I have tried looking into the Rails Guides for I18n #5 but it seems

Did rails or shoulda go insane on the inflection of 'taxes'?
I have a model ''xp_jurisdiction_taxes'' which rails (3) created correctly.
Another model ''xp_jurisdiction_states'' has many :xp_jurisdiction_taxes.
In my spec I am using a shoulda helper to test the association but get the
following error. BTW, greped the whole project just in case and the string
''taxi'' exists nowhere.

Date parse - month and day reversed
I am getting the month and day reversed in parsing a date. I am wondering if
there is some intelligence in Ruby that knows that at the moment I am in
Mexico, as the parsing is working as if I was
"6/15/2008".to_date
=> ArgumentError: invalid date
"15/6/2008".to_date
=> Sun, 15 Jun 2008
What I really want is my date to be understood as month/day/year. Is there a
way to

requests hanging
If my Rails server has been sitting idle for a while, it does not respond to
new requests.
What is the best way to troubleshoot something like that.
I am using Rails 3.0.7 in development.

Rails 3 Active Record query returns "undefined method `loaded?' for #<Array:0x126a4c>"
I am getting this error on an rspec test:
undefined method `loaded?'' for #<Array:0x126a4c>
When I call:
Practice.includes("practice_members").all
Practice has_many :practice_members
PracticeMember belongs_to :practice

Why Ruby on Rails?
Hi everyone,
I would like to ask you why should I use Ruby on Rails? And I have a
silly question hope I can answer it, is it true that the creators of
ruby on Rails are gay? I''ve just read that and want to make sure.
Thanks.

Validation error message header not translated (activerecord.errors.template.header seems to be ignored in YAML localization file)
Hello, i am not sure where to report this, i have created an issue at
https://github.com/svenfuchs/rails-i18n/issues/118
It seems that activerecord.errors.template.header is ignored in YAML
localization file.
Changing or translating it has no effect on the rendered header for
validation errors.
Thank you for any comments,
Alexey.

Is apostrophe (') something special in a regex if at end?
(Ruby 1.9.2) I have a simple validation regex which I need to pass the
following values: "Billy-Bob" and "O''Kelley" (as test cases). Originally I
was not allowing apostrophe but it became apparent I had to allow it.
The initial regex was:
/^[a-zA-Z -]*$/
Now, when I added the apostrophe like this:
/^[a-zA-Z'' -'']*$/
Then for some reason

Rais 3, nested attributes problem with paperclip
I have two models, one model girl and one girl_photos (a file upload
asset). The only code I have in models which describes the association
is:
For the girl => belongs_to :girl and has_attached_file :photo
For the model girl_photos => has_many :girl_photos and
accepts_nested_attributes_for :girl_photos
I''ve tried to save as a nested attribute the photo, it saves the

migrations in rails?
Are migrations used only when you''re making changes to a database? Does
it just allow the developer to avoid using raw SQL when working with
databases?

Shoulda issue: no more "should have_instance_methods" ?
I''m using Shoulda.
After copying the code here....
.... http://joshuaclayton.github.com/code/2009/07/14/should-act-as-list.html....
into my test_helper file so I can test acts_as_list, I came across
issues. For one I realized I had to get rid of the _ between the
"should" and "have" in past cases, but here, I get this error when I
run my unit test:

Custom ActiveRecord Error Message
I''m generating 3 models on 1 controller and i''m rescuing
ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid for validation errors, however 2 of the
models have the same attribute called "name", and if there''s an error on
that field, I wouldn''t know whether that belongs to model A or model B.
What then is the best way of modifying the error message of a validation
error

How to add an exe to Rails app
I have been hacking around with this for a bit but want to see if there is
an easy way:
I am using Heroku and I have the wkhtmltopdf static binary in:
rails_root/vendor/wkhtmltopdf
I am not using any plug ins for wkhtmltopdf, just the executable, on purpose
and want to keep it this way.
My code wants to execute wkhtmltopdf:
# tell wkhtmltopdf to convert html file to pdf

Search large XML file -- REXML slower than a slug, regex instantaneous
Got a question hopefully someone can answer -
I am working on functionality to match on certain nodes of a largish (65mb)
xml file. I implemented this with REXML and was 2 minutes and counting
before I killed the process. After this, I just opened the console and
loaded the file into a string and did a regex search for my data -- the
result was almost instantaneous.
The question is, if I can get
