better nested set and parent_id
Hello everybody
I have a model with better_nested_set. In my "new" form, i pass the
desired parent_id as a hidden field, and in the create action at the
controller i save the new register and use move_to_child_of Model
(params[item][parent_id])
Everything works, but at my log file it warns that i can''t mass asign
the property "parent_id".
What can i do to avoid the

betternestedset in rails 3.0
Hi Guys,
when i upgraded my rails 2.3.4 to 3.0 my betternestedset is not working.
It was working fine in the older version. This is my controller

cat = Category.new
cat.text=''test''
cat.save
cat.move_to_child_of(Category.find_by_id(1)) #26

It gives me this error : "You cannot move a

[PATCH server] fix for BZ #477796: pool name uniqueness
We already had the validation rule in place, but the way the betternestedset API sets the parent_id the rules were being bypassed.

Okay, what gives? find_by_id is failing.
This has the look of a "just don''t quite get it yet" problem. I am
using the ActiveRecord.find_by_id method to identify the parent object
(Quiz) to tie to the child object (Question) at create time.
Here is the stdout log:

skinny Controllers, fat models with REST?
Hi,
I''m really new to rails, so i programmed some stuff and today i read
some things about skinny Controllers, fat models.
My Controllers are really fat now. So i''m asking myself how can i
shrink my controllers and move the code to the models, especially in
fact of REST e.g. in focus on error codes?
code example:
# POST /tasks
# POST /tasks.xml
def create
@authorized

Associated child records not created on creation of a parent.
I am trying to create a record with association. Within the create
method, I would also like to pre-populate dependent (has_many) records
from a template in the database.
The child records are <u>mysteriously rolled back </u> if I insert
them in a loop. If I try to insert a single child record, it works.I
have read the books and tried to google my way out of this but am at a

acts_as_tree and traversing parent/child relationships
I am working on an Rails application that uses a pretty complex
category structure through out the site. I have defined a table to
house all the info and a FK to reference parents within the table
CREATE TABLE categories (
id int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment,
name varchar(50) NOT NULL,
parent_id int(11) default NULL,
constraint fk_category_id foreign key (category_id) references

Rails - Acts as Nested - Impossible move, target node cannot be inside moved tree.
Hello, I''m using the Awesome Nested Set plugin:
https://github.com/collectiveidea/awesome_nested_set
And in my model I do the following:
acts_as_nested_set
after_save :ensure_max_nestedset_level
private
def ensure_max_nestedset_level
if self.level > 2
self.move_to_child_of(parent.parent)
end
end
I do this to keep the levels from getting

Rails newbie: How does the submit_tag work?
I would appreciate any and all input. The Agile book is not useful in
this context. :o(
As near as I can tell, it doesn''t work at all.
I would expect that clicking on the [Next Question] button in the
browser would fire the next_question method in the current controller.
Instead, it (apparently) does nothing.
The tag in question

Creating Multiple Child objects on a single form
I''ve been trying to solve this for the last few hours and I have
something that is working now but I''m curious if there isn''t a better
''right'' way to do it since this seems a bit of a cludge to me, but I
haven''t find a better way to make it work.
The models are as follows:

Using custom routes to handle new nested resources
I have a couple of resources, one nested in the other, such that my
resource spec in routes.rb is:
map.resources :parents, :has_many => :children
This will generate a route for a new child that assumes that the parent
has already been saved, something like:
/parents/:parent_id/children/new
But what if I want a route that handles the case where the parent
resource is also new, and thus

RESTful nested resources and polymorphism?
With ref to my previous post: http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/180356
I am now able to access items from topics controller. However, now I
need to add sub-item e.g.: An item itself could have many sub-items. So
my items model is like:
class Item < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_uniqueness_of :title, :scope => [:topic_id]
validates_presence_of :topic_id, :title, :owner, :position

How do you display nested elements in their hierarchy?
Hello;
I''d like some pointers on how to display nested items in their
hierarchy. I''m developing a project that uses habtm (as opposed to "acts
as tree"). I can interact with the elements using "parent", "child" etc.
fine. I just can''t figure out how to make the elements *display* in
their relationships.
For example, if Ruby on Rails is

How to create a child from a parent
Hi i am trying to figure out what is the best way to do this very basic
thing:
lets say i have two tables: one with parents and one with children.
there is a one to many relation between them.
I scaffolded the parents tabel and i can open each parent. Now i want to
add a link to the ''show'' view which will create a new child record.
In the model i defined the has_many and

select item based on previous select list selection?
So I have a select list with a list of items. When a user selects an
item, another select list should have its default selected item set to a
specific item (the default associated with the first select list).
This is in a form to create a new task. The first select list is a list
of parent tasks. When one selects the parent task, the clients select
list must default to the same client as its

Nested Forms with has_many associations with validations
I want to have a parent model that I can add child objects (via a
has_many association) using the rails 2.3 nested form syntax. However,
it seems like rails throws an error during validation of the parent
model if I have a validates_presence_of :parent_id defined in the child
model.
Is the only solution to this to remove the validates_presence_of
:parent_id? This seems like a hack-ish workaround.
