Saving attribute
Something is getting lost here.
def create
@home = Team.find_by_user_id(current_user.id)
for player in @home.players
player.update_attribute(:game_id, @game.id)
end
end
def show
@players = Player.find_all_by_game_id(params[:id])
end
view
<%= @players.size %> # mistakenly equals zero
Played with the console and everything should be working fine...

inserting multiple rows
I have table which stores multiple entries. Each row has user_id,
game_id and a pick_id. On a page the user has to make load of choices.
All this gets submitted.
the html looks like so:
<input type="hidden" name="game_id" value="3">
<input type="hidden" name="user_id" value="19">
<select name="pick[3]">

Easy AR association stubbing
I''ve added a method to the mock class that makes it pretty easy to
stub associations in rails. I''ve been using it for awhile and it seems
to cut down on a lot of setup code for the controller and model specs
that use associations.
#before
@person = mock_model(Person)
posts = mock(''post_proxy'')
posts.stub!(:build).and_return(mock_model(Post, :save => true))

end_modal question
Really stupid question, but have you wrapped this all in an App class? If you don''t have a
wxApp subclass driving your applications then all sorts of badness would happen.

Appropriate measure of correlation with 'zero-inflated' data?
I have reached the correlation section in a course that I teach and I
hit upon the idea of using data from the weekly Bowl Championship
Series (BCS) rankings to illustrate different techniques for assessing
correlation.
For those not familiar with college football in the United States
(where "football" refers to American football, not what is called
soccer here and football in most

Updating a belongs_to foreign key leaves the old association object available
Perhaps this is intentional, but it seems unlikely:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :school
end
p = Person.find(:first)
p.school # nil
p.school_id = School.find_by_name(''High School'').id
p.school.name # High School
p.school_id = School.find_by_name(''Primary School'').id
p.school.name # High School <= Shouldn''t this be Primary

Validating an ActiveRecord object and its has_many :through associations
Considering an object with several has_many :through => associations,
what is the ''best'' way to handle validations?
As an example:
class Student < ActiveRecord::Base
# some attrbutes like
# :name
# :grade
# relationships
has_many :students_assignment, :dependent => :destroy
has_many :assignments, :through => :students_assignment

Problem with random number simulation
Hi this is my first post. I am trying to run a simulation for a computer
playing Von Neumann poker and adjusting it's expectation of an opponent's
behavior according to how the opponent plays. This program involves random
generation of "hands" and shifting of parameters. However, when I run the
code, no errors come up, but the program doesn't do anything. Could someone

Mocking Access Control
I''m trying to jump on the TDD/BDD bandwagon, but am having trouble
understanding how i should mock my user. The user has a habtm
relationship to a roles model (acl_system2 plugin), but I''m not sure
how to tell rspec about a model.
My code:
describe UsersController do
integrate_views
before(:each) do
@user = mock_model(User)

validates_uniqueness_of does not pass unit test
I am doing some very very basic unit testing. If I take away the
uniqueness validation, the tests pass. Could this be a bug in Edge
Rails?

record will absolutely not save! so weird, please help.
I have a weird problem going on. All of sudden, records for a certain
model will not save with #save Please take a look at this:
>> p = Payment.new(:payment_reason_id => 1, :payment_method_id => 1, :date => Date.today, :amount => ''5.00'', :payable => Student.find(608))
=> #<Payment id: nil, school_id: nil, payment_reason_id: 1,

avoiding timconsuming for loop renaming identifiers
Hi All
I was wondering if I can avoid a time-consuming for loop on my 600000 obs dataset.

There are, say, 143 different schools in this 600000 obs dataset.
I need to thave sequential identifiers, 1,2,3,4,5,...,143.

Cucumber and general Ruby question
Hello,
I have this cucumber step definition:
Given /^the site has pages "(.+)" and "(.+)"$/ do | page_1, page_2 |
Page.create :title => page_1 if Page.find_by_title(page_1).nil?
Page.create :title => page_2 if Page.find_by_title(page_2).nil?
end
This works, but obviously I would like to DRY it up. I was thinking along
the lines.

Prediciting sports team scores
I am working on predicitng the scores for a days worth of matches of team
sports. I have already collected data for the teams for the season we are
concentrating on.
I have been fitting poisson models for football games and have worked out
what model is best and which predictor variables are most important.
We would now like to predict the probability distribution for the scores for
each team.

Migrations and Unintialized Constants Error
I am running into a problem with two of my tables and the
"uninitialized constant" error when using migration.
I get the "uninitialized constant Note" when running the following

Hello,
First, I have to commend O'Reilly for publishing their excellent book on line.
After reading through Chapter 7 yesterday, I was finally able to get Samba up
and running on my NT domain using encrypted passwords and domain security.
Naturally, something broke yesterday around the time wins was set.
In earlier versions of smb.conf, I

has_many :through and scopes: how to mutate the set of associated objects?
I have a model layer containing Movie, Person, Role, and RoleType,
making it possible to express facts such as "Clint Easterbunny is
director of the movie Gran Milano".
The relevant model and associations look like this
class Movie < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :roles, :include => :role_type, :dependent => :destroy
has_many :participants, :through => :roles, :source

I cannot seem to create associations like this:

belongs_to :liaison, :class_name => ''User'', :foreign_key => ''liaison''
end
p = Project.new
