RE: the "cisco vs. Linux" thread
FYI this topic has been covered on the Zebra and Quagga lists
- hardware processors, memory, NICs, etc
- software OS (Linux, *BSD), drivers, etc
I''ve been running a couple of Linux routers for about 2 years now, I''m
using
them as core routers so I bought a couple of rackmount "server" boxes
with
redundant PSUs and h/w RAID (1) for hotswap disks.

Sveasoft Alchemy QOS
I just bought two new Linksys WRT54G routers. Sveasoft has loaded Linux on
this router and included a bunch of Linux tools, one of which is Bandwidth
Management. The QoS aspect of this is supposed to be much more granular
than the previous solution (Wonder Shaper).
I have not been able to find any suggestions for how to impliment QoS
(Bandwidth Management) using the web interface of Alchemy.

Lower cost router suitable for VOIP ?
Hi,
we're testing Asterisk 1 RC 2 behind ordinary router and NAT. Since we're
sharing network with web server it seems like voip packets are not coming
through fast enough (Digium demo dies after few seconds...). It's the same
if I make direct calls (passing Asterisk) so we conclude it's network
problem - it also work normally outside our router...
I wonder what solutions can we

HTB MPU
Hi.
I wrote in a reply to a mail on here recently that you can''t set mpu
(minimum packet unit) on HTB as you can on CBQ.
I''ve just noticed that there is a patch on devik''s site which does mpu
and overhead.
http://luxik.cdi.cz/~devik/qos/htb/
For dsl users mpu is, for practical purposes going to be 106 - overhead
is still variable though, depending on packet size.

Testers needed for VoIP router solution
Hi all,
We have put together a firmware for a range of inexpensive routers.
It has been configured to provide optimum VoIP performance.
We have internally tested it for number of months and it looks very good.
You should be able to run it easily with 20+ phones on local network ( we
still did not hit the upper limit ) assuming that you have bandwidth.
Your VoIP will get prioritized over other

patch: HTB update for ADSL users
OK, here it is. Near perfect bandwidth calculation for ADSL users.
Patch iproute2 with the HTB stuff and then this:
It''s still a hack (as far as I can tell) because we are patching the
rates tables, and hence I think it is only loosly coupled with the
actual calculation of bytes in each bucket.
However, it works very nicely for me! I have only been lightly testing

Hardware solution? (or v.easy software fix instead)
I''m moving to a new place and my new flatmate wants a router because
he likes the cleaness of it all in a non geeky way which I can
understand.
This means it''s going to be hard for me to pursude him to let me run a
computer as a router to act as bandwidth cop.
But I don''t fancy trying to use ssh, VNC and games while he''s using
WindowsUpdate or p2p.
So I need

Layer 7 netfilter not working
Hello there!
I am trying to get traffic shaping working on my Linux router (debian
woody 3r02) and for some things I wanted to use the layer 7 packet
classifier, but I can''t get it to work.
Here is what I did:
-downloaded the patches from http://l7-filter.sourceforge.net
-downloaded the kernel 2.6.7 source
-downloaded the iptables 1.2.11 source
-patched kernel (layer7 patch and some

7960 Dynamic DNS?
Hello everyone....
Searching the archives and google always comes up with entries regarding
the "dyn" dns option in the 7960, but I can't find answers to my
specific question....
My 7960 is connected via cable modem and is NAT'ed (everything is
working fine). On the 7960 under SIP configuration\NAT Address I have
the public IP of my cable connection. Comcast gives me a

management of virus and p2p-traffic
Hi
I have to manage a network with approx. 200 users, a 256kbit/s unmanaged
Internet connection and a 3Mbit/s unreliable managed Internet connection
(only http/ftp-proxy and ssh available). All users are in one Class C
Subnet with 512 IP-Addresses. 60% of the machines are Windows. The rest
are SUN and Linux. At the moment Windows viruses and p2p-traffic eats
most of our bandwidth.
My Aims are:

Asterisk QOS working perfect using sveasoft 3.11g
As seen on my post at:
http://www.sveasoft.com/modules/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=28112#28112
This works very well... It does NOT work with stable 4.0! sveasoft
will be issuing a bug fix for this (4.1) in the near future.
Final Rev of working script w/ asterisk support
I'm not going to run alchemy on production machines until it is stablish.
Remember to set your uplink properly and to set

looking for input on broadband router with QoS and VPN support
Hi,
We're installing an * box next week (pbxtra from fonality) and I'm
trying to come up with a solution for remote users that want a phone in
their home. I need VPN and QoS capability, wireless support would be a
nice to have. Ethernet handoff is fine, i don't need integrated dsl or
cable modem...
I've been googling and cruising the list and can find bits and pieces

small qos switch
I have multiple locations running * where all the phone are
on their own lan and all the data is on a separate lan.
The problem is they are sharing the same dsl connection.
The locations are IAX2 trunked together, but it only takes
one data down/up load to just kill the voice.
What I am looking for is a small switch with QoS that I
can stick in ahead of the dsl modem. Plug in one connection

RV: LATENCY PROBLEMS
Hello there,
I''m having lots of problems with my setup here. Let me explain:
I am network administrator for my university dorm. We are about 300 users,
and we have 2 ADSL connections doing load balancing with 300kbits upstream
and 2Mbit downstream.
The load balancing is working great, we are doing connection tracking so I
can mark and hence prioritize interactive traffic and ACKS

Modems: Cable or DSL digital blunders that lartc may help with.
I have a Cable ''modem'' that has a problem that many of these devices is
bound to have. I was wondering what other lartc user thought about this
and if DSL has simular problems.
Cable, being Asymetrical, is able to upload at a given rate and hopefully
has a buffer, in the modem, of some kind. When I nc(netcat) to a UDP
echo, or discard, server I get about 10Mbps out on my

New L7-Filter patterns for Kademlia / eMule?
I had been using L7-Filter[1] successfully for edonkey/eMule traffic until
recently. I upgraded to the latest release of mldonkey, 2.5.28a, which
implements eMule compatibility, and with support for Kademlia[2] enabled,
network latency increases greatly.

linux box as vlan p2p limiter and firewall?
re
I would like to do some firewalling and p2p shaping/limiting on one of
the vlans in my network and I was thinking of using linux box as
transparent bridged firewall/limiter. For this I''m planning to use AMD64
2.2Ghz box with 2 1gbit NIC (Broadcom 5721), that will be bridged. The
box must be totally transparent and unseen in the network, as well as it
should have much influence on
