Can I do this in a template..?
Hi all, I have a situation where I want to use the same template to create two different files in two different classes. I''ve tried to lookup some information on what is possible with templates, how advanced you can get, but haven''t found much. I guess it''s one of the areas where I should contribute to the docs - once I figured out what I can do, that is...

Runnels development
Looks like there''s enough interest in runnels that it''s time to create a list: https://mail.madstop.com/mailman/listinfo/runnels-dev -- Risk! Risk anything! Problem restarting client service ssh in client
Hello, I want a simple operation in a puppet node like restarting the ssh service if it was stopped. My site.pp is simple as this: import "services/*" node default { include ssh } The services directory as a ssh.pp : class ssh { service { ssh: ensure => running, subscribe => File["/etc/ssh/sshd_config"] } } I''ve stopped the ssh service in the

Problem Managing Ruby Gems
I''m trying to have puppet install a bunch of ruby gems for me, but I''m running into problems with a few of them. This is on CentOS 4.4, ruby 1.8.5 (2006-08-25) [x86_64-linux] and the latest puppet from svn as of yesterday afternoon. I have: package { fastthread: ensure => "0.6.4.1", provider => gem, require =>

Parsechecking in a commit hook
This has been a much-requested feature, and is now a reality (in svn trunk): There is a new option, --ignoreimport, that will (surprisingly) ignore import statements. This is really only useful when using -- parseonly in a commit hook, and note that you''ll have to add the option to --parseonly, none of the puppet executables will add it for you. You should be able to

Install Package only if a certain file exists.
So I can''t quite see how to do this in the existing syntax. Ideally there would be an onlyif parameter for packages, but that doesn''t seem to be the case. I could create a fact that returns true or false depending on whether the file exists, but that doesn''t feel like the right way to do it either. I could do something like: $file_exists =

Apache2 module -- feedback appreciated
Hey folks, I''ve just uploaded an apache2 module[1] to our Google Code repository[2]. It''s based largely on the recipe available on the Puppet trac[3], but with a fair amount of modification and generalization... Basically, it provides abstractions for config file snippets, site definitions, and apxs modules -- and then "basic" and "debian"

Using multiple values for source, for platform/arch/host configs
Hi, in an attempt to simplify my configuration, and from a suggestion on IRC, I was thinking of using multiple values for file { source => [] }. Was just currious if anyone had any comments on this. Basically, I setup my file-server to use: <snip> [private] path /var/lib/puppet/files/private/%H allow * [shared] path /var/lib/puppet/files/shared allow *

File corruption while serving
Can anyone who''s having this problem please send details? I''m trying to reproduce it -- I''ve got 5 clients concurrently retrieving 200 10k files made of random binary, and I can''t get any corruption or memory growth at all. Is everyone experiencing the problem using Mongrel? Webrick? What versions of ruby? Are only big files affected? Small files?

What are puppet dependencies
Can anyone have detailed list of dependencies? I am under impression, that all my all problems with getting puppet to work come from the fact, that I have no idea what are puppet dependencies. On puppet Wiki one can read, that what is required is "ruby", and for storedconfigs "sqlite3" and "libsqlite3-ruby". Well, it is true, that they are required, but by far it

Poor performance of btrfs. Suspected unidentified btrfs housekeeping process which writes a lot
Welcome, I''ve been using btrfs for over a 3 months to store my personal data on my NAS server. Almost all interactions with files on the server are done using unison synchronizer. After another use of bedup (https://github.com/g2p/bedup) on my btrfs volume I experienced huge perfomance loss with synchronization. It now takes over 3 hours what have taken only 15 minutes! File

I posted this earlier on IRC, but it didn''t seem anyone was active: <mozillaman>Hey all! <mozillaman>Quick question for you :) <mozillaman>I installed puppet according to the directions on the site and got this: sudo /usr/bin/puppetmasterd --nonodes undefined method `retrieve'' for nil:NilClass <mozillaman>Anyone have any ideas? Cron jobs not removed when deleted from Manifest
I''m not sure if this has been posted previously, but I couldn''t find any information on it. I added a cron job via the cron type and it installed properly. Next, I removed the cron type from the manifest. The result was that, while the entry was no longer in the yaml file, the cron entry was not removed! Is this a bug, or the way that it is supposed to function? Thank you,

What to call a class: Manifest? Configuration? ResourceContainer?
Hi all, I''ve got a new class in the current code, which I''ve been calling Configuration but Matt reasonably thinks is horrible. He is recommending the name Manifest, and I figured I''d see what others thought. The point of the class is to function as a resource container -- it keeps a reference to all of the resources we''re managing, and knows how to

Error reloading manifests
Hi there, I''m running puppetmasterd manually while testing, and I was trying to split my manifest in several parts using import. If I do so whenever I run the puppetmasterd the manifest gets loaded and served correctly: cognos ~ # puppetmasterd -v info: Starting server for Puppet version 0.20.0 info: Parsed manifest in 0.02 seconds info: /var/lib/puppet/files: allowing *.example.org

Puppet Best Practice
Hello everyone, A long time ago, I posted the Stanford Best Practices and I''ve gone through and updated it today. I''d like to have people go through it and see if we can strip out some Stanford specific stuff and tag this as an official best practice. I think an official best practice will be important as more and more people consider making shareable modules, etc (mostly

How to validate puppet manifests without actually executing puppet?
Hi, I want to validate my puppet manifests before I check them into source control. I just want to make sure that the manifest syntaxes are legal, not to do any more complex testing - the checkin may be on my laptop and not on the system that the manifests may be intended to run on. Ideally I''d be able to do this from ruby code - and I did try to instantiate some classes and override

Puppet Reports
Hello All, We are investigating writing a custom puppet report that would be a web app to show a change log for each host. The issue we are running into stems from how we run puppet. We run a daily cronjob in noop and report mode and fix inconsistency''s either by hand or by puppet depending on the host. This should change some what in the future as our puppet environment matures
