Question: Do all puppetd run at the same time?
(I know more questions... :-))
I know the default for puppetd is to check puppetmasterd every half
hour, but my question does each puppetd check at the same time? Or
does it depend when puppetd is started or like a cronjob does it run
at the 1/2 hour and hour mark? Is there some randomness to the times
they run?
My point is if they all run at the same time then if you have a large

puppetd daemon vs. cron
Hi,
I''m running multiple vservers and have some aspects managed via puppet. I
noticed that puppetd consumes from 20 to 60 mb RAM and the longer the process
runs, the more RAM it takes. It looks like 60MB is the top what I measured.
Having a couple of vservers (11 in my case) this can already take up to 500MB
just for puppet! I''m wondering if there''s any downside in

use one puppetserver for all these machines.
the puppetserver has a DNS entry for each subnet and its own IP-Address

the hostname of the puppetserver is puppet-vm1.domain0, puppet created a

What happens if puppet fails half way into processing a catalog?
If puppet fails half way into processing a catalog the system might be
in an unusable state right?
For example if it installs a package but not the one that follows it
or can''t set up the config file for whatever reason it doesn''t know
how to "undo " the catalog does it?

NYC Puppet Meetup
Hi All,
We are wanting to having a Puppet Meetup in NYC on February 3th, 2009,
6:30 PM. Place to be determined. Baring that my wife doesn''t give
birth by then (which would prevent me from making it) how does this
sound to everyone else?
Brian G.,
Can you rally up the troops and also invite people from other groups?
Also let''s have some specific topics to discuss.

Another ''found a bug'' problem - This time with user purging.
Ok, given the statement on the web page about unlesssystemuser under
Resources (
http://reductivelabs.com/projects/puppet/documentation/typedocs.html#resources),
I assume that users can be purged.
However, when I attempt to do this with resources { user: purge => true,
noop => true } and what I get is:
err: Found a bug: private method ''split'' called for nil:NilClass.

puppet and LDAP users
I am trying to get puppet to manage my LDAP users but I don''t appear
to be having much success. What I have in puppet.conf is this
[puppetmasterd]
ldapserver=ldap.myorg.company.com
ldapbase=dc=myorg,dc=org
ldapuser=cn=admin,dc=myorg,dc=org
ldappassword=mysecret
ldapparentattr=dc=myorg,dc=org
I added the ldapparentattr in desperation and doubt if

Using checkpassword to block ips?
Hi new to the list, but we are a long time user of Dovecot via DirectAdmin
control panel.
We, like everyone else, are seeing an increase in dictionary attacks of
POP/IMAP. We want to block them.
I've searched the mailing list and found a few recommended fail2ban, which
really won't work for our case. We need to do this over many machines and
not one or two. We also like to gather

Mongrel Memory Usage
All,
I''m trying to figure out the best way to estimate the amount of memory
usage that will be taken up by Mongrel and I''m hoping that you have
some estimates that can help me.
I''m currently estimating the following:
Memory Required = Number of running puppetmasters * size of manifests
* number of clients managed
The mongrel model doesn''t seem to *ever*

I''m looking for some documentation on migrating clients from one puppet server to another. Any links would be greatly appreciated.

Parsechecking in a commit hook
This has been a much-requested feature, and is now a reality (in svn
trunk):
There is a new option, --ignoreimport, that will (surprisingly)
ignore import statements. This is really only useful when using --
parseonly in a commit hook, and note that you''ll have to add the
option to --parseonly, none of the puppet executables will add it for
you. You should be able to

Package resource changes
What with the impending release and a now fixed bug nagging me,
I''m testing puppet [2556] from subversion.
There have been changes in packages, I used to have
Package {
provider => "aptitude",
}
in my default.pp, but that doesn''t work anymore, and changing package to
type or removing the declaration doesn''t help.
How do package providers work now?

how to handle a random password in a config file?
Hi I''m trying to configure bacula''s config file. The issue is
everytime the script runs a new key gets generated for bacula.
How can I have the config file update only run once with puppet, yet
replace the default bacula-fd.conf file.
script listed below:
class bacula-client {

case $datacenter {

Home shares staying (NT4)
I am having the same trouble with automatically mounted home shares with
samba 2.2.1a (PDC, domain logins, roaming profiles) and NT4WS sp6a. If
I login as one user, logout, then login as another, I can view the
previous users home share as well as my newly logged in users home share
(lather, rinse, repeat...). The NT box has a machine account, domain
logins work, profiles work, login scripts
