Question: Do all puppetd run at the same time?
(I know more questions... :-))
I know the default for puppetd is to check puppetmasterd every half
hour, but my question does each puppetd check at the same time? Or
does it depend when puppetd is started or like a cronjob does it run
at the 1/2 hour and hour mark? Is there some randomness to the times
they run?
My point is if they all run at the same time then if you have a large

Using checkpassword to block ips?
Hi new to the list, but we are a long time user of Dovecot via DirectAdmin
control panel.
We, like everyone else, are seeing an increase in dictionary attacks of
POP/IMAP. We want to block them.
I've searched the mailing list and found a few recommended fail2ban, which
really won't work for our case. We need to do this over many machines and
not one or two. We also like to gather

puppetd daemon vs. cron
Hi,
I''m running multiple vservers and have some aspects managed via puppet. I
noticed that puppetd consumes from 20 to 60 mb RAM and the longer the process
runs, the more RAM it takes. It looks like 60MB is the top what I measured.
Having a couple of vservers (11 in my case) this can already take up to 500MB
just for puppet! I''m wondering if there''s any downside in

how to handle a random password in a config file?
Hi I''m trying to configure bacula''s config file. The issue is
everytime the script runs a new key gets generated for bacula.
How can I have the config file update only run once with puppet, yet
replace the default bacula-fd.conf file.
script listed below:
class bacula-client {
# define which server to use
case $datacenter {

Puppet playing badly with Debian etch rubygems
To install the ruby-augeas gem, I installed rubygems on Debian etch,
which lead to:
Setting up libgems-ruby1.8 (0.9.0-5) ...
Setting up ruby1.8-dev (1.8.5-4etch4) ...
Setting up rubygems (0.9.0-5) ...
Before this (I mean *immediately* before this) puppet worked fine
exceept for not being able to find a provider for Augeas. After
this, though:

the same puppetmaster in different subnets/vlan
Hello,
i have a couple of VLAN where each has its own subnet, now I would like to
use one puppetserver for all these machines.
the puppetserver has a DNS entry for each subnet and its own IP-Address
VLAN 1: puppet-vm1.domain1 172.1.0.1/255.255.255.0
VLAN 2: puppet-vm1.domain2 172.1.1.1/255.255.255.0

the hostname of the puppetserver is puppet-vm1.domain0, puppet created a

Puppet Class execution order
For the life of me I''m not sure why this isn''t working properly but Puppet
appears to execute classes in the order it feels like, not how I''m
specifying it within the language.
I''ve tried the newer sytax
Class[''one''] -> Class[''two'']
Yet, I see Class two get executed first.
I''ve also tried doing it by defining

puppet and LDAP users
I am trying to get puppet to manage my LDAP users but I don''t appear
to be having much success. What I have in puppet.conf is this
[puppetmasterd]
ldapserver=ldap.myorg.company.com
ldapbase=dc=myorg,dc=org
ldapuser=cn=admin,dc=myorg,dc=org
ldappassword=mysecret
ldapparentattr=dc=myorg,dc=org
I added the ldapparentattr in desperation and doubt if

sequential change implementation
How do I prevent the following:
I have several web servers behind the load balancer, how do I make
sure that when something changes and web servers need to be restarted
that they are not all restarted at the same time but rather one by
one. Is there a way to configure sequential push of some kind?

What happens if puppet fails half way into processing a catalog?
If puppet fails half way into processing a catalog the system might be
in an unusable state right?
For example if it installs a package but not the one that follows it
or can''t set up the config file for whatever reason it doesn''t know
how to "undo " the catalog does it?

It looks like mail is no longer making it the Redmine

How do you handle deleted nodes with exported resources in this situation?
I have an issue where for a file type of an exported resource I must define
as such:
force => false,
replace => false,
Meaning the file is created, but do not replace after it''s added. I do this
because of the app modifies the config file after (I know bad idea on their
part).
How can I ensure this file is removed when I remove the node from

Stoking a Religious War: Why Did You Go With Puppet Over Other Options?
Hi, Gang..
The Subject: line says it all. My organisation is looking at
selecting a configuration management
system. Any comments about why you chose Puppet over other options
would be very helpful to us.
Cheers,

How long for changes to be pushed out?
Hello, I have 680 hosts reporting into a central puppet server.
Yesterday I made a change to site.pp and the nodes/foo.pp and nodes/
bar.pp files to push out some new files (a script to enable LDAP) and
it seems that only a handful of stores have downloaded the file and
run the script.
(I don''t have reporting setup yet other than on a few clients which I
did manually)

Official puppetlabs position on cron vs puppet as a service?
Over the years many shops have come to start running puppet via cron to
address memory leaks in earlier versions of Ruby, but the official position
was that puppet was meant to be run as a continually running service.
I am wondering if the official position has changed. On one hand many if not
all of the early Ruby issues have been fixed, on the other, the addition of

problem with package function and removing rpms
I have a recipe that I''m ensuring that I remove rpms that may be
installed by CentOS/RHEL before I install the MySQL.com rpms.
the recipe and logs are listed below. For testing I have mysql-* rpms
already installed.
Is there a method to force specific order to run the recipe?
What am I doing wrong?
# install mysql rpms (not CentOS/RHEL vesions)
# PROCESS:
