R loop within a loop
Hi, I'm working on a loop function for a large dataset which contains 1000 different groups. I would like to reconstruct the order of events within each group by using a loop function in R. (Currently the order of events are based on the ascending order of prev_event within the group) A demo data frame: event prev_event group 845 0 5360 926 153

timeout issue
Hi, I have 2 linux machines on a Gig network. What would be the reason for getting a timeout error. We have --timeout=600 in the command. The version of rsync is 2.6.2. There are no evident network problems otherwise. The command used is rsync -a --delete --timeout=600 --stats --rsh="ssh -p 22" /localdata/ server:/remotedata/ io timeout after 600 seconds - exiting rsync error:

Capture R-Console Output to Excel with RExcel
Hello All I've just started to use RExcel instead of CMD Batches. But I don't get the console output to an data.frame and push to Excel. With the CMD batch you got the console out relatively easy with C:\LocalData\R\bin\R CMD BATCH --slave %rscript% %logfile% to a file. But how can I get it to Excel with RExcel an VBA? Thanks, Dario [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

OT: RBanking
Hi all, This might be a little off-topic, but I wanted to let you all know about a project for which I used R. I started an (free for all, open source) offline banking tool, programmed in R and using the tcltk library for the user interface. It has several nice features already :) It can use regular expressions to match/group bank transactions and can obviously use R's power to plot nice

thunderbird detach attachment
Hi all, Thunderbird has an option to detach attachments from (for example) sent items. I've tried it, and it does not work, and also in the dovecot logs I don't see anything interesting meanwhile. Before looking deeper into this: Does anyone here know if this option is known to work, or not? We're running dovecot 2.1.7 on debian wheezy. Removing unwanted attachments is a nice

large matrix
Dear R-users I need to convert a matrix with three columns in a new array with multiple columns. For example, oldmatrix 1 4 5 1 54 52 1 9 43 2 32 5 2 54 6 2 76 6 3 54 54 3 543 7 3 54 6 newmatrix 5 5 54 52 6 7 43 6 6 if the first column have a new value then add a column to the new matrix and the new[i,j] <- old[,3][i] I write this code, but my initial matrix is very

model frames and update()
This issue has arisen within my anova.coxph routine, but is as easily illustrated with glm. testdata <- data.frame(y= 1:5, n= c(8,10,6,20,14), sex = c(0,1,0,1,1), age = c(30,20,35,25,40)) fit <- glm(cbind(y,n) ~ age + sex, binomial, data=testdata, model=TRUE) saveit <- fit$model update(fit, .~. - age, data=saveit)

Writing Excel (.xls) files on non-Windows OSs using Perl
Hi all, There have been quite a few threads in the recent months pertaining to the ability to directly write native Excel (.xls) files from R. For example, exporting R matrices and/or data frames to an Excel file, with perhaps the ability to create multiple tabs (worksheets) within a single file, with one tab/sheet per R object. There exists the xlsReadWrite package on CRAN by Hans-Peter Suter,

NA Replacement by lowest value?
Hi all, I need to replace missing values in a matrix by 10 % of the lowest available value in the matrix. I've got a function I've used earlier to replace negative values by the lowest value, in a data frame, but I'm not sure how to modify it... nonNeg = as.data.frame(apply(orig.df, 2, function(col) # Change negative values to a small value, close to zero { min.val =

[macosx] improving quartz & Aqua Tk behaviour outside of RGui
Hello, On Mac OS X, certain Aqua/Quartz UI functionality requires an application to be launched from within an app bundle, or (alternatively) requires a Carbon application with a resource fork. Playing with the wxWidgets distribution, I discovered that it is quite easy and transparent to make such a Carbon app from (I guess) any command line application. When applied to the R executable called

Pairwise n for large correlation tables?
Hello, I'm using a very large data set (n > 100,000 for 7 columns), for which I'm pretty happy dealing with pairwise-deleted correlations to populate my correlation table. E.g., a <- cor(cbind(col1, col2, col3),use="pairwise.complete.obs") ...however, I am interested in the number of cases used to compute each cell of the correlation table. I am unable to find such a
