Estimating backup usage with dir-merge filter
I use --filter='dir-merge .backup-filter" to allow my users to designate portions of their home directories that should be excluded from my rsync-based backup system. I'm looking for a way to periodically generate a report that shows the amount of backup space being used by each user. I've tinkered with writing my own script that processes any filter files into --exclude

Resizing EXT3 partition in guest instance CentOS5
Hi, I have two guest vm instance running CentOS 5 with ext3 partition. I will like to reduce 1 VM harddisk space and using the 'release' harddisk space to add onto my second VM. Basically I need to know how can I reduce and increase an ext3 partition in CentOS KVM. I did a search and basically i can do it by booting the VM using Knoppix and use Gparted to reduce and increase the

AW: diskspace; was: When will quality increase be unnoti cable?
Yes, you can: whenever you are unable to make a decent backup at least once a week, your diskspace must be considered to big. strange diskspace consuming
Hi, I do a tgz-backup some maildir-folders with n*1000 off files and a lot of GB in storage. The backuped maildirs are removed after the tar. My assumption was, that the free diskspace should be bigger after that, but from what I get with df, it looks like I'm loosing space. Currently the tgz is saved on the same disk/mountpoint. Any hint, why removing the maildirs dont free diskspace as

Trouble redirecting traffic on transparent bridge.
I have posted this question to the netfilter mailing list along with #ebtables, #iptables, and #netfilter. Nobody has really responded, so I''m led to believe that it is either incredibly complicated or *really* simple. Please, somebody throw me a bone here! Ok, on with the show... I have a bridge (br0) with two interfaces (eth1 and eth2). Neither br0, eth1, or eth2 have an

Dovecot and Solr 6
Hi! Dovecot 2.2.24 Had set up solr and new schema collection. Copied dovecot provided schema. There was an error with booleans (while getting schema via http), which I "solved" by removing "add-unknown-fields-to-the-schema" from solrconfig.xml. It is correct way to solve this? Anyway, I run tcpdump to see network activity between dovecot and solr: #tcpdump -i lo port 8983

Recommended partitioning for xen host
Is there a recommended partitioning for dom0? Here''s what I have planned. /swap 2GB /boot 100MB (ext3) / 5GB (ext3) xenmachines LVM volume group for the remaining diskspace dom0 will install in 5GB / and each domU will have a swap and root logical volume in "xenmachines" Thank you, _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list

Storage upgrade maildir suggestions?
Hi, we start to run out of diskspace soon as our users start to keep mails for longer time periods. That's fine, but space consuming. The maildirs are about 1 TB in total, and not long ago we enabled zlib which is very nice. Now I have some thoughts about the next steps: a) Migrating the whole system to a new server with more storage? b) Install a virtual server for the mailsystem and an

Jump Raven
Has anybody had any success getting Jump Raven to install, much less run? I bought the game many years ago and thought I would try it out on Wine, seeing as it is a Windows 3.1 game and probably won't work in XP. Fedora Core 4 all updated except for the last kernel, wine-0.9.10 (Fedora's packaged version). I am running off of the CD at /media/cdecorder. The setup proceeds showing me

I hate myself for asking this, but...
I'm going to encode ~2000 CDs soon. All genres, but 90% of it has distorted guitars... Everything from punkrock to metal to industrial to goth to synthpop to classical to techno to whatever... I've heard that RC2 has some hearable artifacts, even in 192/256 kbps... There have been quite a few "bugreports" since RC2 with people sending samples that even I can differ from the

cvs version / testing
Hello, I pulled the latest from cvs today and ran several tests and added more options to the CFLAGS in the Makefile. To start with, I ran valgrind against sshd & it comes up with this: ==24959== 112 bytes in 1 blocks are definitely lost in loss record 297 of 310 ==24959== at 0x40164650: malloc (vg_clientfuncs.c:100) ==24959== by 0x807A0D1: compat_init_setproctitle (setproctitle.c:236)

fedex tracking
I''ve been using the Business::FedEx::DirectConnect perl module to track and ship packages via FedEx for awhile now. I''m wanting to convert some of this functionality over to ROR, mostly just the package tracking part. Has anyone successfully tracked a package using the Shipping API out on RubyForge? It seems like the functionality is there since it''s just another

Status of fragment support, advantages of having fewer indoes
Hi, There wasn't much information regarding fragment support of ext2/3 since 2003 [1], Andreas stating that there were problems with the xattr implementation. Has this changed in the meanwhile? My second question is regarding the bytes-per-inode ratio: What benefits would I gain from having fewer inodes? I reckon it's only diskspace (if so, how much?). best regards, Michael Renner [1]

rsync's "value to large" error.
HI, I'm trying to transfer a list of files within a filesystem to another filesystem. I've used the option: # rsync -avzol --progress /wp05/global/FCSI/WP_RLS05/rundir/ /nfs_proj/global/WP/ However, it had produced the error below: building file list ... global/FCSI/WP_RLS05/rundir/wp_celtic_max_fullwarn.tcl.log: Value too large to be stored in data type # du -sk wp_celtic_max.tcl.log

hackish error handling
I''ve got a block of code that''s turning out.. well - just plain ugly. So i know I must not be doing it the Ruby way. The main problem I''m having is in dealing with handling errors - and just not finding much Rails documentation that gives a deeper understanding of how to handle errors in Rails (outside of several docs on the catch-all''s) the main method

Checking remote servers
I''d like to hear some suggestions about securely administering a system remotely. Here''s the application: a project is going to scatter some server machines around the US. The server machines will be running Linux, with the only network servers being a custom application. Ignoring the separate question of physical security, how can I remotely check the system''s
