Rio Karma mini review
Hello everyone, Stopped by Best Buy last night and picked up a Rio Karma. Since from-the-trenches reviews seem scarce, I thought I might post some thoughts. The short story: I'm probably returning it, will be buying a different portable player. The software doesn't work, and I don't think I wanna screw with it. The long story: It looks cool, is tiny,

Buying Vorbis Music
('binary' encoding is not supported, stored as-is) Hello, I don't know if you knew that there's a russian site where you can buy your music in Ogg Vorbis. There are many albums where you can decide what Codec (MP3, AAC, WMA, Vorbis, MP+) and Bitrate (or quality for Ogg) should be used to encode and download the files encoded specifically for you. The prices are somewhat low.

vorbis is dying? [aac is taking over?]
Hey, It seems that ogg/vorbis is being slowly forgotten.. It used to have really alot of attention from all around, and it was the "the" coolest thing ! Now people barely talk about it, most of them now talk about AAC and how superior it is both in low and high bitrates. I know that there have been discussions about vorbis 1.01 and 1.1, but as time passes by we hear no news. Yeah

International dialplans for Asterisk?
Does anyone know the maximum number of digits for an international phone number? Doing some searching, it looks like 16 numbers including the "011" is the maximum number, because 17 is just not found: OK: 1234567890123456 http://www.google.com/search?q=011XXXXXXXXXXXXX Not OK: 12345678901234567

Another portable player? (The iRiver iHP 120)
Hi all, My japanese is not so good ;-) But it appears that iRiver have released the iHP-120, and it includes OGG playback support. http://www.iriverjapan.com/product.php?product=iHP-120 If you scroll down to "Multi-CODEC" you will see that they use the words "Ogg Vorbis", not once but twice! I haven't seen it float past here yet, so I just thought that I would bring it

Question about Ogg files Structure
Hi, I bought an iRiver HP-120 which can read ogg files (via a hard drive). Many people experiment that reading ogg file decrease the baterry charge more quickly than with mp3 at the same bitrate. The only raisonnable reason of that mysterious thing is that reading ogg file is not sequential onto hard drive, and the hard drive head must move more than for reading an mp3 at the same quality, and

Voicemailmain automatic extension detection?
Is there a way I can have "voice mail check" calls coming from my internal users automatically get to the right extension, without having the user enter their extension? I'm thinking that I could have the local SPA boxes translate, or have each user live in a context where the extension in question exists uniquely per user, but both of these seem kludgey. Thanks in advance for

question about use MP3s with LAME on Icecast
Hi. Is it possible (legally) to stream MP3s on Icecast that have been encoded with LAME encoder (http://lame.sourceforge.net/license.txt)? So if a composer writes a track, then saves in MP3 with LAME, and wants to distribute with Icecast server, is it legal? Must he get license for MP3 (http://mp3licensing.com/royalty/emd.html) and pay any royalties for MP3 DISTRIBUTING or STREAMING as it stated

First impressions of iRiver iHP120
Battery life sucks. This may be due to three factors: 1. It was the first charge that the machine had 2. Playing Vorbis takes more battery power than MP3 3. The battery is a bit rubbish More considered opinions to follow. test fails when requesting LC_CTYPE
On RedHat Enterprise Linux 6, the test below fails (this is using the stock GCC 4.4.7) from R-devel r72707. LC_CTYPE is unset when I run it, but LANG=en_US.UTF-8 It also failed "yesterday" where as far as I recall the test code looked a bit different. Decent Performance
Hi all, I am trying to get some decent speed out of a vanilla Debian (Proxmox) box and am running out of ideas. Basically I can exchange data at 110MB/sec (raw, nfs, ftp) but not with Samba shares. I tried almost every samba tuning tip I could find to no avail. The only optimisation left to smb.conf at the moment is debug level = 0. As one can see the robocopy throughput is merely half of what

Samba 3: bad read performance
??Hi all! We use Samba 3 server for some video stuff (editing, rendering, and so on) -- that's why performance is critical. We've tried a lot smb.conf options, but Samba can't satisfy our requirements. Our server configuration is as following: * Hard drive: RAID5 (8 x Seagate 7200.10), 3ware 9550SX-8LP controller * NICs (trunked): 2 x Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5704 * Processor: Opteron

mp3pro and the mp3 streaming license
Fraunhofer and Thomson Multimedia release their new mp3pro codec and new licenseconditions for streaming mp3 : http://www.techreview.com/web/kiang/kiang060701.asp My comment is that the licensecharge isnt frighting compared to what we broadcaster pays in musicroyalties allready. Is this what you feared jack? :) -- Venlig hilsen/Kind regards Thomas Kirk ARKENA thomas@arkena.com

DMCA and webcasting
Last year I arranged with my college radio station and ITS department to webcast the radiostation using icecast. The webcast has been a wonderful success so far. My problem now is not technical, but political. A few days ago I recieved the following message from the station director: ================================================================== hey josh, i talked to [faculty advisor]

GTA:SA ogg file problem
There is an application that rips the radio stations in the game Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, and it produces ogg vorbis files. These files do not play on my iRiver iHP-120, it just skips on to the next track after about 1 second. I can provide an example file if someone would like to take a look and see what might be causing the problem. __________________________________________________ Phil

compiz plugins and window types
Hi All, First off, I've just started using compiz and its fantastic... I'm using compiz with KDE (on FC6), all is OK apart from one small niggle which is when I use the scale or switcher plugins it includes my kicker windows (the desktop panels) in the list, which isn't so pretty. I don't know much about gconf, but poking around in the settings for compiz and found that these
