yet another stereo related question
Hi!
>From http://www.vorbis.com/stereo.psp : "Oggenc's default choice varies
by bitrate and each mode is selectable by the user"
So, how am I supposed to do that? E.g. what do I have to do when I want
an 128kbps .OGG using lossless stereo, or does this "selectable by the
user" mean only that I can choose the stereo mode indirectly by choosing
an appropriate bitrate?

Re: Odd number of samples in a stereo wave file
This topic is possibly more appropriate on the flac-dev list, since
most flac users are not going to be interested in the details of WAVE
format errors. Assuming it's ok to keep talking about it here...
Ben, you've stumbled upon one of the common shortcomings of
specifications. There are often assumptions which are not spelled
out, or there are pieces which are vague. In some

bassrumble, take two
Hi,
maybe this is of interest for someone out there. I found that taking the
difference between an original sample and its decoded Vorbis counterpart
is a cool way to mangle sounds (especially voice samples get a nice
weird touch :] ).
A side effect is that the result is not only exactly what information
the encoder omits, it also contains things that it adds to the sample
(artifacts). Leaving

nominal bitrates
Hi,
<p>apparently, I didn't delete my test samples ... I found them. :) Here's
a small table of what nominal bitrate fits to which quality at what
sample rate. Quality levels inbetween -1 and 0 are possible, but I
didn't test them. Nominal bitrates of those quality settings will be
somewhere between those of -1 and 0 and therefore can be guessed.

Higher mono bitrate in CVS libvorbis
Hi:
I have been curious as to Vorbis' performance at -q0 for some time now.
When RC3 came out, I used a track I have here and encoded it at q0 at
11.025, 16, 22.05, 32 and 44.1khz, both in stereo and in mono. After
having heard the great sound of -q 0 in stereo, I thought I'd see what
bitrate I got with -q0 in mono. I was disturbed to discover that the
resulting file was 9.5kbps higher

possible solution...?
Which DSP are you running to feed your stream? (on winamp I am assuming)
If you are using the new shoutcast 1.8.2 DSP, it has had a lot of problems with super high CPU load and memory leaks. Try Oddcast instead (unless you can run ices or darkice) using VBR Mp3 streaming.
Nothing but happy times here on a win2k dual p2 333 with winamp (2.74) and Oddcast DSP Beta 25 connected to KasterBlaster

artifact bug status? / compiling under OpenBSD 2.8
Hi!
On March 17th I posted a message on this list concerning an artifact bug
in beta4 that is audible in all available bitrates. It was this rumbling
sound in the bass area. I made a demo clip, which still is available at
http://www.stud.uni-karlsruhe.de/~us87/ogg/vorbis_bassrumble_demo.rar
and that contains both the original .WAV and an .OGG @ 350kbps. This
archive is 2.1 MB large.

Stereo mode settings
Hi everyone,
I'd like a bit of information about the stereo mode settings in
psych_44.h of libvorbis. Specifically, about the adj_stereo structure:
typedef struct {
int pre[PACKETBLOBS];
int post[PACKETBLOBS];
float kHz[PACKETBLOBS];
float lowpasskHz[PACKETBLOBS];
} adj_stereo;
What I am attempting to do is bring lossless stereo coupling down to the
lower quality levels in

possible solution...?
Uaaargh ... between now and the last mail, everything's gone kaploohey.
But I doubt that it concerns icecast too much in this case - the
streaming computer has a cpu load of 90-100% for no reason (it's an
athlon 1ghz with only winamp and ssh and the system monitor running
under win98). The playback on the streaming computer sounds good,
though, but what reaches the client side is no more

bassrumble still there at 96kbps and below
Hi again,
shortly after beta 4 came out i noticed that rumbling artifact oggenc
puts into a certain tune of mine. Back then, it was even audible at an
ABR of 350kbps.
Now with RC2 that bug is completely gone at bitrates of 128kbps and
higher. I can hear it again at 96kbps and it becomes more apparent with
lower bitrates. At 64kbps, I assume, everybody should be able to hear
it.
This is not a

Congratulations to 1.0, cheers! :)
Not much more to say, thanks a lot to all developers for your hard work!
I have no chance to reach vorbis.com (CVS works, slowly ;) ), I take
that as a very good and promising sign.

possible solution...?
How long has that system been up? Back when I was using Winamp/Win98 as a
stream source it would do that after a day or two. Sometimes closing &
restarting Winamp would help - more often I'd need to reboot.
Win2000 would probably work better - of course ices on Linux would be best
:-)

Icecast is cool, but how about video?
*This message was transferred with a trial version of CommuniGate(tm) Pro*
I use real server to broadcast live video streams from my studio ( using
icecast to broadcast the audio ) to clients using real player ( of which
there also is a free version of ) and I don't pay a dime. I don't know how
much more free something can get. But, you sir, can believe whatever you'd
like to...

pre-RC1 downloads
Hi!
Propably a stupid question, but where can I get those brandnew encoders
from? It'd be great if someone could post those URLs to the list for
people like me who don't read any forums (no time, no fun :P). Thanks in
advance!
Obtw, CVS would be fine, too ... but as long as the new code isn't
merged to the main branch I feel pretty lost searching for it. Any help
here would also be

Stereo voice not being retained
Hey Kevin!
Once you start dropping under (I think) 32kbps, the codec naturally
starts losing stereo separation for the benefit of quality.
If you really want perfect stereo at 16kbps CBR (this is horrifically
low in my opinion) you might be better off splitting the audio and
encoding each part at 8kbps CBR.
Or, there may be a magic "enforce 100% stereo" one could pass? (doesn't

Vorbis and Joint Stereo.
Hi,
I've just read this on Vorbis Xtreme site:
"11. YOU SAY THAT OGG VORBIS IS PATENT-FREE, BUT I SAW A PATENT NAMED
'JOINT-STEREO' ON FRAUNHOFER'S PATENT LIST? SO OGG VORBIS ACTUALLY ISN'T
PATENT-FREE SINCE IT ALSO USES JOINT-STEREO?
No. You can't judge on a patent just by looking at its name - what's
'inside' is what matters. So if the name of the

Hello all,
I created today a fake stereo piece of music (the left and right
channels were completely equal), and encoded it with the all the modes
the RC2 encoder supports, and found that:

mode * joint * stereo * in * in % * *

About lossless and point stereo
Hi,
I've read the Vorbis stereo documentation on square polar mapping and
currently reading the source code to understand it. But there are some
things which I don't quite understand and hope I can get some guidance on.
I understand the decoding/decoupling part as it is the same as the one
described in the stereo docs:
From mapping0.c:
