Reducing the bitrate without recompressing
Can I reduce the bitrate of an OGG file without recompressing everything? It would be useful to convert high bitrate ogg to lower bitrate ogg for portable players. Chat with ogg
The last week, after 5 minutes of astonishment for the great compression ratio achieved by ogg (370MB wav of voice -> 14 MB OGG, 28 kbps without any perceivable and/or significant quality loss), I had the idea of use ogg to stream my voice, in order to chat in almost-realtime with a friend (only one, of course: I have a 56k modem). Here the idea: I put a streaming server on my machine (I

Dolby Begins Licensing AAC Consumer Encoder Implementation
Well, in the world of audio compression it's never boring... :-) Full press release from Dolby: http://www.aac-audio.com/press/aac.pr.0104.AACencoder.html My comments: Looks like Dolby will start licensing AAC encoder that targets consumers and the products they use like CD rippers, jukebox players, etc. Also, it looks like that this encoder will be Low Complexity AAC ("The AAC Consumer

Archival quality for music
This mail depends upon the fact that I don't have a couple of good earphones ;-) I read in the site that q=6 is a very high quality, but does it contain perceivable differencies from the original? (for 95% of people, of course). I also found q=6 to produce files slightly bigger (1/10 bigger) than those produced with lame VBR q=2 (about 192 bps on average). I always thought LAME VBR q=2

Here is a link to what they say about "Other Formats"
http://mp3licensing.com/other/index.html They list: Atrac 3, (E)Pac, AAC ..and various patents of theirs they believe that these formats rely on.. then basically say: "We have not yet determined our licensing policy for this format" Vorbis is not mentioned.. Multichannel files
Hi, As I´ve understood things, the Ogg Vorbis format supports more that two channels (stereo). Is there any tools to encode x sourcefiles into one .ogg file? I am a musican and am thrilled with the ide of makeing music in surround (or in more than stereo). This leads to my next question: is there (developing) any decoders for multichannel oggs to, let us say, 4.1 or 5.1 surround? Wouldn´t it

Why so many lossless formats?
Hi folks, I'm trying to get a handle on the many lossless audio formats from the perspective of a software developer. I love the FLAC format because it is open source and it performs very well. But there is also the MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing), AAC (Apple Lossless), and probably some Microsoft format(s) that compete in the same feature set. These formats all achieve

It's really pretty simple. You can download the code and build it all you want... ...for yourself. It cannot be distributed, sold, or used commercially in any way. Multichannel vorbis.
Hi. I have two CDs that the artists inteded for simultaneous listening. They even provide instructions on how to start two CD players with the minimal time shift. (for those interested - the CDs are Neurosis/Times Of Grace and Tribes Of Neurot/Grace) I've heard that Vorbis can encode multiple streams. I've already encoded both albums into regular 2-channel .ogg files. The questions

OggPCM2 : chunked vs interleaved data
I made a few updates to OggPCM2 http://wiki.xiph.org/index.php/OggPCM2 reflecting the latest discussions. Could everyone have a look at it and see if they agree. Otherwise, what do you feel should be changed? Anyone wants to speak in support of chunked PCM? For all those that are just tired of this mess like me, please express yourself in the new spec I created: OggPCM3
