Vorbis & ReplayGain
Hi all,
I have implemented ReplayGain support for Vorbis.
If you are not familiar with it, it is basically
a method of making sure all your files have equal loudness,
remove the need for normalization and prevent clipping
during playback. The process is totally lossless,
and supporting it requires minimal work.
More info about the exact workings can
be found on www.replaygain.org (recommended

Suggestion for libvorbisfile: scaling
I've been experimenting with the ideas of Replay Gain[1] and find that
ogg123 doesn't have a way of specifying the scaling applied to
replayed samples (like -f in mpg123).
Looking at libvorbisfile, I see no function exactly matching this
possibly desirable behaviour.
ov_read() scales by either 128 (byte output) or 32768 (word output),
but there's nothing in between.

Problem with ov_read_float()
Greetings,
I'm having some sort of problem using ov_read_float(). Everything looks
good to me, but I'm trashing memory somehow, so clearly I'm screwing
something up. What confuses me is why it takes a ***float for the
buffer.
I call it like so:
float **buffer
bytes_read = ov_read_float(&vf, &buffer, 0)
memcpy (b, *buffer, 0);
This compiles fine, but after a few reads,

Updated BCC projects
In response to requests, I've given my vorbis BCC projects a thorough
cleaning. They are now much more professional, complete, and include a
little documentation. Ogg Vorbis 1.0 ready! The new files are available here:
http://dave.gasaway.org/vorbis/vorbis_bcc.zip
At this time, they cannot compile with the free command-line tools available
from Borland. If anyone can help make

Divide by zero in accumulate_fit
Hi,
Lately, my oggenc builds (from CVS) haven't been running correctly. In a few
debugging sessions, I've found that I'm getting a divide by zero exception.
The exception happens in accumulate_fit (floor1.c), line 455:
int weight=nb*info->twofitweight/na;
Here is the call stack:

My patches in bugzilla
Has anyone put an eye to my patches*? AFAIK, they're simple and quite
innocuous. Sorry to be a bother.

Archive indices for current month
In case the important parties missed my passing comment in another thread...
The mailing list archives master indices no longer show the current
month. I've found they are still available by using a direct URL, however.

oggdec in cvs?
I downloaded a nightly CVS tarball about a week ago. It contains an oggdec
tool in vorbis-tools. However, I don't get this tool when I checkout / update
from CVS. What's the deal - is it in CVS or isn't it?! :)

ogg123 patch for tag display
Last week, I suggested a change to ogg123 for tag display. Well,
tonight, I've filed a bug and hacked together a patch:
http://bugs.xiph.org/show_bug.cgi?id=179
How does it look?
<p>P.S., I would have provided a link to the e-mail in the archives, but it
seems the current month is no longer available from the archive master
indices.

A few doc snafus
I took notes of a few errors while reading some of the documetation a
little while back (verified they're still in cvs) ...
vorbis-ogg.html: the 9th bullet under Encapsulation has a couple of
typos: 'contining' and 'no'.
ogg-stream-flush.html: the function declaration in the gray box reads
"ogg_stream_pageout".

RE: Hlp in finding a native Ogg trim, fade & nomalise tool
ReplayGain is not much good for FM broadcasting, and debatable for
streaming too. There is a limit on the peak volume that can be
broadcast on an FM signal so it is best to have a song volume of 100%
broadcast with 100% FM deviation. If an average song volume is very
low, for example, but has some loud peaks in it, ReplayGain will
increase the volume to the extent that the peaks will be way too

Tag changes
A few days ago, I initiated a conversation with Jonathan Walther to
seek his advice on how he might tag a CD that I ogg'ed. Out of this
discussion, we decided to make a couple of changes to the proposed
standard.
1) A new LABELNO tag was added to the list. This would contain the
record label's catalogue number. Generally available on the face of
the CD. Probably more useful than

Observations about the floating point data in vorbisfile
Hello.
I noticed that when reading data with ov_read_float(), you can get
values outside [-1..1] when the stream is encoded at lower quality, but
with higher quality, the values trim down to inside [-1..1].
Looking at the plot from -q10, the data from ov_read_float seems
clipped.
I've made some plots of encoding the start of Rammsteins Feuer from the
xXx soundtrack (it's a pretty loud

ReplayGain support for Vorbis
Hello all,
I'm glad to announce to you that Vorbis now has full
ReplayGain support. If you're not familiar with ReplayGain,
take a look at www.replaygain.org. The main features are:
a) all songs play back with equal loudness
b) removes the need for normalization
c) allows for clipping prevention
Using it is very simple. Get a compatible decoder (ogg123,
XMMS and WinAmp all support it

flac --replay-gain
I have FLAC files that I would like to re-encode with --replay-gain. I have my Flac's organized in Artist/Album folders, so I should have no problem getting an album gain/peak per album.
Do I need to first de-code the flac's to wav files and then "flac --replay-gain *.wav", or can this be accomplished by going to each Album directory and "flac -f --replay-gain

Replay-gain
Hi List,
Is there a way to correctly use the replay-gain feature on flac files that
contain an entire album (i.e., multiple tracks with seekpoints added from a
cue sheet)?
