some EAQUAL results
For those who are interested, I've run 3 EAQUAL tests on both the LAME and OGG encoders: LAME with the --alt-standard preset (with and without --nspsytune) and OGGENC (RC3) with -q 6 (my personal "sweet spot") I am somewhat unsure though about the validity of these tests, since the original and decoded files were not the same size (2 KB difference). The LAME encoded files were also

RC2 better than RC3? Graphed!
Well, this question comes once and again. I have RC3 and Garf's RC2 tuned versions (160 and 350) in a nice graph. Nobody should be surprised that RC3 is better, but in some cases GRC2 shows better EAQUAL/bitrate results. There seems to be room for improvement in RC3 with some tweaking. See it by yourself at http://audio.sinderman.com/ Cheers, AGS.

Ogg Vorbis Quality Analisis (+ bug) (+ misc)
I have run an ogg analisis using EAQUAL from -q 0 till -q 10 evaluating bitrate and quality. The results are shown in a nice graph, and can be seen here: http://audio.sinderman.com/ One thing I have found is a bug, as it is cleary shown by the blue lines. Other discoveries are written in that page, and others are still evolving in my mind :) The goals of this analisis is to help the developers

quality settings
ARGH! I am at a complete loss as to which OGG quality settings to use: 8? 10? 3? I'd like to be able to listen to my primarily Rock oriented music on a high-end system (though I don't own one - yet) without any noticeable sound degradation, but I don't want to go total overkill with -q 10. With LAME, I at least used to know 192 kbps with -q0 was a perfect size/quality proportion. I

just wondering...
Has anyone from the Vorbis team been in contact with the LAME camp? I'm sure with their knowledge, the people developing LAME could make a major contribution to the OGG development, if they were willing. Sure, MP3 and OGG are in some ways majorly different, but they are similarities, right? With the latest stable release of 3.91, I think the LAME crew has done their best and pulled a helluva

Winamp equalizer problems
I just wanted to know if anyone has noticed a difference between MP3 and OGG encoded files when having the Winamp equalizer switched on? I seem to be missing bass and the sound doesn't fill the room as much with OGG. With the EQ turned off there is no discernable difference between both LAME and Vorbis encoded files (both at an average of 192 kbps). Is this an error with the OGG Winamp plugin?

Speex Resampler quality
Hi, I just built a sample application with speex resampler in linux and I tried to resample 8K sine wave tone mono to 48k using speex_resample_process_int. I am using a tool called EAQUAL for audio quality. I find the quality of Speex resampler to be decreasing when I increase the quality q of the resampler init function. Can some one give me pointers regarding this?? As per the API, if the

Reading multiple txt files into one data frame
Hello All, I have a device that spews out experimental data as a series of text files each of which contains one column with several rows of numeric data. My problem is that for each trial it gives me one text file (and I run between 30 to 50 trials at a time) and I would ideally like to merge all these text files into one large data frame with each column representing a single trial. It is not

version number
After downloading Vorbis 1.0 the other day and encoding a couple of songs with it, I checked "file info" and noticed that their version number was still "0". Until now I'd always assumed "version" meant the version of libvorbis, and that after the 1.0 release it'd switch to "1". Does "version" means something completely different then? Or

OGG CVS binaries
For those of you Windows users who are unable to compile your own binaries, I have found a website that offers daily CVS binary updates. I've found it very useful. http://www.din.or.jp/~glit/TheOddStage/Progs/Vorbis/autobuild_e.html -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project

OGG in P2P networks?
I'm still looking for a P2P network (i.e. Gnutella, KaZaA, etc.) and client that actively supports the OGG format. People have told me that since Gnutella is so flexible that it is also possible to trade .ogg files. In reality, I haven't seen a single client using the Gnutella network that could search and truly FIND an .ogg file. Does anyone know of a network or specifically, a client

EAC: Ogg-on-the-fly?
I was wondering, is there a way to encode Oggs with EAC on-the-fly? I'm looking for a way to shorten the whole ripping and encoding process, but so far I've only seen support for the commandline encoder. -- GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage:

(Un)Usefulness of Vorbisgain?
I've just Replaygained several of my Vorbis albums with Vorbisgain, ranging from 80's metal to present day soft rock. What I don't understand is why does Vorbisgain actually make all tracks QUIETER? I see an average of -7db on most albums. And after that, not only are they substantially quieter than my MP3s (which is a pain), but it also fails to really "even out" the volume.

[Flac-users] troubles with 1.0.3 beta4 front-end
When you maximize the window, the position of the Fingerprint button doesn't adjust; the Help function still scrolls the first two screenfuls together without a break, so that the first screenful is impossible to read; not sure how, but the first time I tried it, it locked up and couldn't close (needed a three-finger salute). This is under WindowsME on a vintage 1998 266MHz Pentium II.

When will quality increase be unnoticable?
I started thinking about this after doing a little testing with AAC, MP3 and Ogg Vorbis. I was comparing the different formats at similiar bitrates. After a while I finally realized that they all sound more or less the same to me. >From 160 kbps on, I usually cannot detect any difference between a lossy encoding and the original source. If LAME is used, I have to strain to notice anything at

bug? ogg123 and mono files
hello, I try to listen to the stream at http://ogg.radiostudio.org:8007/ostream.ogg with ogg123, it's a 44100/mono stream. It sounds to me like a mono file played as a stereo file. there are very often silent drop outs and the music is pitched. is this a bug in ogg123? I changed to stereo encoding and know it's better (normal pitch without silence), but I have klicks/scratches in

Hello, I would like to upgrade my samba version 2.2.1a to 2.2.5!! Well I am trying to find a rpm for SuSE 7.3, but was not successfull yet. The several Readme's of Lars Mueller did not really help my. Also, first I do not want to compile by my self. Does any body know where to get such rpm?? If not, I cannot find the ./configure arguments for samba 2.2.5 in the source code tar.gz (

error while transfering files
Hi everybody! I've problems with Samba and Win98 clients. Everytime I try to copy some files from a Win98 machine to the server, the progress bar freezes after a while and then after a minute or so I get an error message that the 'network ressource isn't available'. The server runs Samba version 2.0.7-3 and the OS is Debian Linux 2.2 r3 (Potato). And this is what error.log says:
