How ISPs May Quietly Kill VoIP
Communications
Posted by Zonk on Friday March 18, @10:59PM
from the poor-kids-never-had-a-chance dept.
ravenII writes "PBS's i'Cringley's informative piece gives an
eye-opening look at the anticompetitive behavior of some ISPs who are
showing up late to the VoIP game. This is not something that could be
easily mandated, and the beauty of this

Slashdot: Building A Web-And Mail Server With CentOS 4.3
I may not agree with everything they say, such as
ISPConfig (I prefer webmin) but this tutorial offers a
"step by step opportunity for newbies". Does this
indicate that CentOS is now a "mainstream" distro?
(Technically speaking its not CentOS 4.3 but CentOS 4
Update 3 but we are not into semantics).

Intel 82574 issue reported on Slashdot
For those that may have run across the story on Slashdot about this NIC,
here is our statement:
Recently there were a few stories published, based on a blog post by an
end-user, suggesting specific network packets may cause the Intel? 82574L
Gigabit Ethernet Controller to become unresponsive until corrected by a
full platform power cycle.
Intel was made aware of this issue in September 2012 by

Slashdot thread references R/Quantian and another new R/S-PLUS book pending
Greetings all,
Just a quick heads up that there is a Slashdot thread this morning on
Open Source Math Software for Education, which includes references to R
and Dirk's Quantian distribution (among others). The thread is at:
http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/04/12/13/2355258.shtml?tid=185&tid=4
The OP's query was targeted for high school to first year college age
students, but as

slashdot article
I saw your post and read the replies with great interest. Did you draw any
conclusions from the /. replies? Where do you think you might go with the
licensing issues for embedded systems?
I would vote for the BSD license approach myself.
Here's another licensing question. Your source code lays out the
functionality of the FLAC codec and the file formats. What if someone comes

Slashdot Interview
Hey all.
Just in case someone here doesn't read Slashdot on a daily (OK, hourly,
backoff! 8-) ) basis, here's a new interview with Chris Montgomery (I can
only assume that it's you, Monty? I thought you were like Sting, or Madona!

Good interview, and more converts to the collective!

in-memory test database -- where''s the schema?
I''m trying to get the unit testing for a new project to use the wonderful
:memory: database specification for SQLite. However, like many people
before me, I can''t get the schema to import or have anything else useful.
Initially, the error I get is:
/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/sqlite3-ruby-1.1.0/lib/sqlite3/errors.rb:94:in

This has _nothing_ to do with Microsoft possibly buying Red Hat.
People who even suggest this only expose their *0* understanding of business.
Microsoft has an alliance with Sun.
Why?

Turning off SMB1 make slashdot and theregister !
We can't do that until we provide a reasonable way for SMB1 clients to
connect, probably via a SMB1 -> SMB2 proxy based on the NTVFS file
server (where we had such a prototype until very recently).
It won't be perfect SMB1, but needs to be enough for basic operation.
I'm quite convinced Samba and SMB1 are critical infrastructure in many
places and while we may dislike SMB1 for

2) How your rails app holds up to the slashdotting.
Great work!
