Some pre-RC1 listening tests
Hello everyone, ff123 compiled Monty's branch of the RC1 encoder, see his post on r3mix.net forum: http://66.96.216.160/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=c&action=display&num=994299736&start=30 Anyway it only supports ~128kbps mode, so I did a quick listening test with some files that bugged vorbis beta4. grace.wav - the right channel is still a bit watery, and I think this can be seen

Some very early RC1 results
Hi all, I started testing the RC1 encoder at ftp://sjeng.sourceforge.net/pub/sjeng/oggdrop.exe (based on branch_monty_20010708) On the songs I have tested so far (not much :) I did not hear any stereo issues, but there are some very noticeable problems with the produced files. Songs without much high-end will suddenly have one when encoded. (you'd expect it the other way around) It

[Flac-users] FLAC/LPAC/Bzip2 better for archival?
Hi. I am a student with limited funds and storage space on my linux box. So I am trying to decide what audio compression scheme to use for my collection of audio tapes (recordings of one speaker, preaching in an church auditorium, recorded with low-grade mics and tape decks) converted to digital audio (16bit, stereo, WAV, 44100Hz). Is FLAC, LPAC, or a standard data compression format better for

bitrtate peeling and lossless compression
I just read some of the discussion on the list about 'bitrate peeling' and remembered an interview of Monty that I have read recently. In it he says that Vorbis uses MCDTs <sp> and that these are theoretically reversable. And now, I learn that theoretically we can use bitrate peeling to make smaller files from larger ones, and that leads to my question. Could I theoretically

LAME guys are making improvements, too
Hello all, it seems that at least some of the points that make OGG Vorbis superior to MP3 will be eliminated (I still prefer OGG :) Roel VdB wrote to [MP3encoder] list: -------------------------><8---------CUT HERE-------------------------- I hope Gabriel commits Jons complete LAME Tag code soon to the CVS. The LAME tag would makes all CBR(>=64kbit/s)/ABR/VBR LAME files have +

RC2 artifacts
Hello -- I desperately want to start using Ogg compression on music I release on the internet, but I am encountering a fair amount of artifacts. I noticed some in beta4 and was hoping they would disappear with RC1. However, I've been playing with RC2 and I've still been banging my head into a number of problems. A majority of the music I make has long drones with a fair amount of spectral

Pre-echo like noises on Beta4
Hi, there. Although I'm not a hacker at all, I noticed an audible noise on Beta 4 encoded files. So, I'd like to report it here. I ripped and encoded 'A Day Without Rain' on the album with the same name By Enya into Vorbis using Oggenc and Oggdrop Beta 4 from the Vorbis site. (You know, she is quite an encoder-killer.) At all the bitrates, files encoded by Oggdrop had audible

Very audible artifact in RC3
Are you aware that RC3 can cause a scratching, repeating noise to the audio? I downloaded an album in ogg format and while all other track seem ok, the last one has this problem. Sounds too weird to be a ripping problem and ogginfo (1.0) doesn't see any problem with the stream. If you'd like to listen to the file and have a BIG mailbox (size=3677710) or a login to some webspace,

[jamie@audible.transient.net: Bug#160155: gapless playback]
Jamie, I hear what you're saying. I don't believe this *should* be a plugin's responsibility, though it sounds like with XMMS it is. But I don't know how to fix it. Probably with enough archaeology into the XMMS source and other plugins I could find out. I'll file it in the feature requests and hope someone can get to it. Josh --- Matt Zimmerman <mdz@debian.org>

New asterisk installation but no audible voicemail prompts?
Hi List! I installed Asterisk 1.0.3 stable on a RHEL rebuild. Due to problems with * modules refusing to build I replaced the RHEL kernel with stock 2.6.10. Asterisk seems to be working but when I dial voicemail I hear nothing. When I hangup I see a message on the console that the calller did not specify a mailbox number so I guess voicemail app is working. The phone(Grandstream BT100) is

Open Source Compression
I thought some here may find this interesting... There has been discussion in Monkey's Audio forum about creating a new open source format for lossless audio compression with the intent of creating a *standard* for lossless compression, similar to what Xiph is trying to do with Ogg Vorbis. Some have even been tossing around the idea of trying to work in conjunction with Xiph on this, and a

New winetricks 20110628: 18 new verbs (adobe_diged, audible, irfanview, winamp, bioshock2, lego_potc_demo, nfsworld, d3dx9_43, glidewrapper, grabfullscreen, ...)
Another two months, another winetricks release. (So much for release early, release often :-) Highlights: - fixes a bunch of verbs whose download URLs had changed, especially vcrun2005 and vcrun2008. - fixes the annoying "unexpanded variable" error which happened when running old wine with a new wineprefix. - brings back gog support (though without automated download for now; any
