MP3pro
So it looks like the Frauenhoffer boys are issuing an updated format --
MP3pro. They claim that it will give 128kbps/MP3 quality in 64kbps.
I'm interested to see what others think of this.
I'm also curious: I've seen others on the list say that Ogg/Vorbis' sound
quality is "better" than MP3. Can this be quantified (or is this already
on a web page somewhere)? I kinda

icecast 2.0 semi-permanent test stream
Icecast 2.0 and Ices 2.0 are both fairly usable now.
I have set up a semi-permanent test stream for people to bang on at:
http://i.cantcode.com:8888/ices.ogg
Please report any problems you have.
I say semi-permanent, because it will probably crash now and then, and I
will be developing and putting up the new versions on a regular basis.
If it stops working for more than an hour, somethings

I've already responded to Richard. Is there a volunteer who can edit
the page to fulfill his request? If so, please edit the page let
Richard know that you've completed the task.
Thanks,

The Xiph.org Foundation Needs You!
I am looking for someone to continue the Ogg Traffic tradition.
Ogg Traffic is a weekly update and status report about what's happening with
Ogg development as well as other related projects and interesting bits of
news (Xiph, Speex, Icecast, etc.).
Stan Seibert, who resurrected OT recently, is busy with Real Life activities
that prevent him from writing an OT (http://www.vorbis.com/ot/)

Library issues (BOUNCE vorbis-dev@xiph.org: Non-member submission from [rob@emusic.com]) (fwd)
BTW, I need a volunteer to upgrade xiph.org to MailMan or the like. I'm
officially sick to death of majordomo.
(Or, if you want to code all the features I want in majordomo, that's fine too
;-) I'm a little bit out of time, see....

questions about artifacts in low bitrate streams
Hello-
I recently downloaded Verbs and started playing with the encoder. The
quality was great when I encoded a few samples at medium and high bitrates,
but when trying to encode the same clips at 16 kbps, artifacts are audible
during playback- short bursts of screeching noise, not just distortion. I'm
using oggenc 1.0 beta 4 to encode, sonique to play back on Windows NT. I've

another Icecast2/Vorbis test stream
Greetings:
Yes, I've placed another test stream on-line. Thanks to the feedback
from members of this list, I've taken a few extra steps.
1) According to DSLReports, my uplink today is 137 kbps. It may
actually be a little faster, they say that Netscape's reporting is
skewed (and I use Netscape).
2) Thus, I've prepared a set of Ogg files encoded with -b 24 to fit

patches to beta 4 spec files
Hi,
Attached are patches for the beta 4 distribution, fixing minor
problems in RPM spec files.
One question: are there any reasons not to include vorbiscomment
in the vorbis-tools binary package? I've added the long-awaited
utility program into the revised spec file, but I wonder if it
is a wrong change...
Regards,

beta4 merge
Monty merged his branch onto mainline.
mainline is now beta4. Give it a whirl, test the crap out of it, etc.
I've got about 20-30 emails full of minor patches and a few big patches
for build system stuff, so for those of you who were waiting on me, I
haven't forgotten and will be getting to those in the next few days.
If all goes well, we'll be tagging beta4 and cutting the
