Google to Open-source VP8 for HTML5 Video
"Google will soon make its VP8 video codec open source, we?ve learned from multiple sources. The company is scheduled to officially announce the release at its Google I/O developers conference next month, a source with knowledge of the announcement said. And with that release, Mozilla ? maker of the Firefox browser ? and Google Chrome are expected to also announce support for HTML5 video

As I've said before...
Don't say I didn't warn you: http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100520/googles-royalty-free-webm-video-may-not-be-royalty-free-for-long Don't get me wrong, I'll be as ecstatic as any of you to see Theora and VP8 succeed, I just see the patent system as far more insidious than I think many of you do. MPEG-LA answers some questions about AVC/H.264 licensing
I've compiled all the e-mails between me & MPEG-LA, along with an explanation and some major conclusions, here: http://www.librevideo.org/blog/2010/06/14/mpeg-la-answers-some-questions-about-avch-264-licensing/ Comments welcome, discussion even more so (preferably some of that on the site, too...). -- *Basil Mohamed Gohar* abu_hurayrah at hidayahonline.org

[OT-ish] WebM/Ogg VP8 streaming
Hi all, Sorry for the VP8 question on the Theora list, but I think all the relevant people are here :) I'm using Icecast to distribute some Ogg Theora streams at the moment with a view to adding VP8 along side these in future. Ideally I'd just use Ogg VP8+Vorbis, I know there is a mapping for this already but how much support from the browsers can I expect for this configuration?

Website for Ogg/Vorbis support for MPEG4IP

NHW Project - some update
Hello, I don't have advanced on the NHW Project this past month, but I have definitely validated its characteristics and this new version. The NHW Codec preserves or enhances image neatness and sharpness, which translates that on good quality images the NHW Codec is globally better than HEVC, and on degraded (with blur, artifacts) images it is worse than HEVC because it lacks of precision. Some questions about Theora IP
Hello Theora developers, I'm doing some cursory research into Theora's IP status in preparation for asking Apple to reconsider the possibility of shipping an implementation. I have a few questions and I'm hoping knowledgeable people can help out. 1) What are the terms of any patent licenses or disclaimers, and do they have field of use restrictions or limitations on code for

Steve Jobs about theora
I guess you've all read it already, but here it goes: "All video codecs are covered by patents. A patent pool is being assembled to go after Theora and other ?open source? codecs now. Unfortunately, just because something is open source, it doesn?t mean or guarantee that it doesn?t infringe on others patents. An open standard is different from being royalty free or open source. YAPQ (Yet Another Patent Question)
Looks like the mpeg gestapo are frantically at work cracking down on mpeg projects. Several important projects (tsunami mpeg, gogo, faac, etc) were shut down by the jack booted patent nazis. Since FhG, mpegla, etc plan to start charging royalties on everything even remotely mpeg-related very soon, I expect a lot of interest is going to shift to Vorbis. And soon thereafter, I expect FhG to attack

Guess everyone saw this already?
Google has opened up VP8, and has lined up about 40 companies/organizations (including xiph) in a coordinated launch: http://www.webmproject.org/ Anyone know where there are quality comparisons between H.264, Theora, and VP8? -SteveK

Using g729 now that patents have expired

The rates are in arbitration, and I doubt they will come out anywhere near that amount. It just isn't feasible, even for large companies. Reember, tradidional

Can ogg file contain VP8 frames
Hi All Is it a possible case that an ogg file contains VP8 frames. I know ogg file generally contains vorbis, theora frames. Recently I came across an ogg file that contains OPUS frames. Is there any tool, that can take a webm file as input, and output an ogg file with preferably only video (no audio) frames. Please let me know. Thanks Austin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML

[OT] Just saying hi!
I hope this list is small enough for not beeing banned when introducing oneself. So... Hi, I just subscribed to the theora-lists. I'm from the XVID project, so I know a deal about video and MPEG-4 in particular, but nothing about Vorbis/Theora etc., That's why I'm here, because I'm interested in patent-free alternatives. I guess there is no documentation of the current status
