serial subtraction within a vector
Hello,
I have a vector (numeric) v-> c(a,b,c,d,e) and I want to create the vector
n->c(b-a,c-b,d-c,e-d). How can I do that?

count appearence of zero in a vector
Hello,
I wish to count how often zero (0) appears in the vector test.

I think of something like ...
> sapply (test, function (x) if (x==0 ...
... but actually I dont know how to carry on.
Could anybody give me a hint?

Problems loading siar package
Hello,
I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and installed R via a disk image from an
older computer - it seems to work fine. I then installed the package "siar",
tried to load it via the library command and received the following messages
(note the "mvtnorm" package did not appear to load correctly):

qplot: plotting precipitation data
Dear list,
I wish to plot chromatin precipitation data: I would like to have a
rectangles (x:end-start, y:peak) but I do not have an idea how to define x
(in terms of qplot syntax) and to choose the correct geom.
mydata is a subset of a larger file.

Asking help for finding the highest density region
I am using the package hdrcde to get the highest density region. I have the data from an unknown distribution. And I used the subroutine hdr from the package to get the highest density region. But I always got a error message. I do not know why. Who can help?Thanks!
The codes look like this:

High Density region using hdrcde
Dear All,
could you please confirm (or disconfimr, and then please explain:-)) my understanding of the results generated by the following code:
hdr.den(rnorm(200,55,3))
result:
[,1] [,2]
99% 47.07170 63.26864
95% 48.83670 61.55108
50% 53.04884 57.37916
the way I am interpreting the results is that in this normally distributed data set with the mean of 55 and SD of 3:

RODBC connection failed
I am trying to restart on R after 2 months stop. Start with previously
functioning procedure:
"ch<-odbcConnect("dBase Files")"

I have tried unsuccessfully different working directories.
The only change I see is that I am working with a new login account on
the same machine.

during fitting of successive datasets, stall crashes iterations
Hi all,
I am trying to do fitting of large sets of timeseries data, and error
messages derail the process when I encounter a dataset that doesn't fit. I'd
like to ignore those "misfits" and try another equation or move to the next
dataset. Any ideas? (piece of code below)

subset a defined row plus the aforegoing
Hello,
my data is sorted by start.ens (see below). And now I would like to extract
all rows (so called* defined row*s) with type==Expression - subset (df,
type==Expression) - and the aforegoing type==DNase HS (which is not
necessarly row n-1 - assumung that the defined row is n). I dont know how
to add this to my subset command.
Is that possible?

plot: x and y chromosomes are missing
Hello,
I have a list with gene names, fold changes (=expression level) and
chromosomes.
Names fold change chromosome
hz 1.5 2
If I plot fold change versus chromosome (or vice versa):
plot (ch, fc)
I see only the chromosomes with numbers but not those with letter (x and
y). What can I do?
A second question:
How can I add a single line in that plot at a certain

making chains from pairs
Hello,
having a data frame like test with pairs of characters I would like to
create chains. For instance from the pairs A/B and B/I you get the vector A
B I. It is like jumping from one pair to the next related pair. So for my
example test you should get:

Multiv / hierclust / plclust
I use hierclust (hierarchical clustering) in multiv package. In the
documentation it is said that plclust (plotting a dendrogram) is
available in S-plus. Can I find it anywhere (I have searched through
http://lib.stat.cmu.edu/S and found only quotations of plclust in
multiv) or is it only part of the S package (which I don't have)?

fusion of overlapping intervals
Hello,
I have start and end coordinates from different experiments (DNase
hypersensitivity data) and now I would like to combine overlapping
intervals. For instance (see my test data below) (2) 30-52 and (3) 49-101
are combined to 30-101. But 49-101 and 70-103 would not be combined because
they are on different chromosomes (chr a and chr b).
Does anybody have an idea?

transparent surface in rgl
Hi all
I am a complete newbie to this list (just subscribed) and a newcomer to
R (an S user from olden times). I have been using scatter3d to create a
3d scatter plot with surface. The graphic is created within the rgl
package and I have used rgl.postscript to export it so I can generate a
publication quality image. My problem is that the plotted surface is no
longer transparent in the

Windows / RODBC / Accented characters
A disturbing behaviour of R: an import of data using RODBC library
(Windows 98, R 1.1.1) recognizes accented characters in variables
names but these can't be manipulated further. See below:
