Installing R 1.9.0 on OSX
I've downloaded and installed R 1.9.0 under OS X 10.3.3. I then
removed my previous R 1.8.0 installation by following the
instructions in the readme file, e.g.,
1. drag the "StartR" icon into the Trash;
2) go inside your Home directory and search for the Library folder.
Inside the Library folder in your Home directory you'll
find a RAqua directory: drag the RAqua

Hello,
I'm trying to install a package that requires a Fortran compiler

Simultaneous subscripts and superscripts
Dear List,
I'd like to add text to a plot where a text symbol has both a
superscript and subscript. For example, the variable S with a
superscript 2 and a subscript t. I have been able to accomplish this
using either
expression( paste(S,atop(scriptstyle(2),scriptstyle(t))) )
or
expression( {S[t]}^2 )
but the spacing isn't quite right (or rather what I'd like) using
either of

Calendar Time Series
Hello,
Does R have any facilities for calendar time series? I'm working
with a 40 year long, daily time series and I would like to have each
datum associated with a calendar date. I searched the R website and
found several new packages for irregular time series but none for cts.
By the way, I just installed 1.8.0 on Mac OSX and the installation
was effortless! I also very much like

as.POSIXct problem
Hi all,
I'm having difficulty converting a 'dates' object to a POSIXct object:
testDATES<-c(35947,35971,36004,36008,36053,36066)
testDATES<-chron(dates=testDATES, format = c(dates = "m/d/y"),
origin=c(month = 12, day = 30, year = 1899))

Chron, as.POSIXct problem
Dear R list,
I noticed the following 'problem' when changing the format of dates
created with seq.dates() (from the Chron library) using as.POSIXct()
(R 1.8.0 on OSX 10.2.8):
> datesTest<-seq.dates(from="10/01/1952", length=3, by="days");
> datesTest
[1] 10/01/52 10/02/52 10/03/52

libR.dylib on OS X
If one installs the CLI and RAqua versions, by saying both "make
install"
and "make install-aqua", then packages that use libR.dylib get their
symbols from
/Applications/StartR.app/RAqua.app/Contents/Frameworks/libR.dylib
and not from /usr/local/lib/R/bin/libR.dylib.
That's unfortunate, because the first is likely to change, and the
second is not.
For instance, what

R OS X panther? (PR#5529)
I have just used the RAqua.pkg to install R, and it doesn't work! I
have Mac OS X 10.3, and the old version of R works OK, but the .pkg
thing installed, and then when I double-click on the "StartR"
application nothing happens. Nothing at all, no little icon bobbing up
and down in the dock, just nothing. What have I done wrong? I didn't
have to install the other packages

RAqua and gcc
Hi,
I've recently purchased PowerBookG4 (panther) and installed RAqua 1.8.1.
I also installed gcc version 3.3 through Xcode tools. But, for some
reason, I'm having a hard time getting gcc work with R. For example, I get
the following error while installing Hmisc package. I would appreciate any
suggestion to fix this problem.
Thanks
Kosuke

Trouble with HTML search engine
There have been a number of posts to this list by people having trouble
with the HTML search engine. Often these troubles are caused by incorrect
setups (user hasn't installed Java properly, or Java is disabled, or
Javascript is disabled). Sometimes the trouble persists even when Java is
installed properly.
I have written an alternative HTML search engine, which is based on

Suggestions from both Prof Brian Ripley and Gabor Grothendiec solved
my problem.

RAqua
Small things, mostly.
1. Buildproblem. Well-known and annoying. Build fails if debugging is on
(which is the default) because Debugging.h breaks devQuartz.c
compiles. If debugging is switched off on the command line or in
the environment, then devQuartz.c builds, but aquaconsole.c does
not compile, because it needs Debugging.h. I do not want to edit
Apple system files, and not files in the R

R as OS X Framework
After the recent discussion about future direction of the Mac OS X
port, I was toying with the idea to make R a proper Mac OS X framework.
There are several advantages: OS X locates frameworks automatically,
therefore any program wishing to link against R has only to specify
"-framework R" at link time. Furthermore versioning is supported, i.e.
if a program is linked against R 1.7.1

installation (either from sources or from binaries) can fail. If you

I've installed R 1.8.1 on OSX 10.3 (Panther) using the RAqua.pkg and
all indications were that the installation was successful. However,

It would seem that R 1.8 doesn't like the version of libiconv that
Panther has installed. Can we compile this for Aqua ourselves or will
there be a binary for we who upgrade sooner rather than later?
