"dumb" SATA controller recommendation
Just wondering if any 4.2 users out there have a favourite "dumb" PCI
controller to add a couple of SATA ports to a motherboard that doesn't
include SATA support. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just 2 SATA
ports that a recent vintage kernel will recognize without a lot of
configuration gymnastics. The intended use is for relatively light
weight internet browser

Home Theater Thing
I checked Best Buy again. The second system I recommended is in stock
at the Best Buy in Warwick. It's on sale for $353. :)

I'm thinking about getting out of Dodge today to unwind so if you pick
it up early today I can come up and help you install it and then just
come home later in the day.

SATA - SIL3112A controller
Hi folks,
I have just installed a PCI SATA controller based on the SIL3112A
chipset into my Centos-3 (latest kernel patches applied) system and
moved an existing (not the boot disk) SATA drive from the onboard
controller to the SIL-based one so I can setup software RAID with two
300GB drives. Kudzu/Linux found the controller and drives straight away
and they've appeared as 'hda' and

G4-400mhz enough for CentOS 4.3?
It's that time again. I'm stuck with a bunch of older Powermac G4's
that I either need to repurpose or give the heave ho. I've not tried
CentOS on Mac hardware before. Would the following config be suitable
for a (somewhat slow) workstation?
PowerMac G4
400mhz
256mb RAM
40gig ATA disk
Some sort of dual-head ATI video setup with 64mb VRAM (I've forgotten

sshd hack
I'm not really a programmer and I recently came across this hack to
insert a short sleep statement into auth-passwd.c within sshd. It seems
to quickly confuse automated dictionary attacks. I've moved sshd to
higher ports but apparently the cretins are now scanning to look for
that and attacking on whatever port sshd shows up on.
Anyway, the link to the hack is here:

SunFire X2100 and X4100
Anyone seen either of these "in the wild" yet? RHEL3/RHEL4 are install
options so I'm assuming CentOS will just work out of the box, but I
thought I'd ask here. The 2100 seems like a viable alternative to
whitebox 1RU boxes that we currently use, especially with the new dual
core processors.

Doc for the Wiki
I've modified/updated an existing HowTo (for RHEL) I found on the net
detailing how to install the following on a "virgin" CentOS 5.1 install:
Python 2.4.5
Python Imaging Library 1.1.6
Zope 2.10.5
Plone 3.0.6 Content Management System
Do I just email it to this list? It's about 6 pages long.

Installing CentOS on RAID PATA not SATA - A8V
I'm trying to install CentOS 4 on an A8V on the
PATA/Raid drives on the Promise controller. The
Promise controller is recognized (sata_promise), but
the PATA drives are not recognized. Base on this
thread
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=147303
it seems that there is a patch which was merged in
2.6.11 to get pata working.
Any ideas how to proceed?
Thanks in advance

OT: remote power cycling
I'm in a situation where I'm going to have to deploy a rack of servers
in an unmanned location in another country. On rare occasions, I've had
systems that would not recover gracefully from a warm reboot and needed
the power cycled. Years ago, I had such a device from APC, but haven't
needed one in a long time since all my locations are staffed. I'd
welcome any

Centos5 installer hangs up with promise sata controller on board
Hi,
curently running centos4.4 with a board having promise sata controller.
If I try to update to centos-5, the installer hangs up.
No problems under centos-4.4.
Does somebody know a workaround for this problem?
In the mailing list archives I found a similar report, but no solution.

latest skype (version 8.16.0.4) on Centos 7
Hi all!
I've finally been reduced to having to install Skype on my Linux box.
I resisted for years, but now ended up trying it.
and while the latest RPM installs just fine, it refuses to acknowledge
that I have a microphone!
In fact I have two: 1 in the USB web cam (it finds the cam), the second
in a Plantronics USB headset, which works fine but not with skype.
it is as if it doesn't

S/N on this list is plummeting...
Is it possible to create an alternate list for the people who insist on
spending their days posting long-winded political commentary and
opinion? Maybe something like centos-offtopic?
Reading the list has gone from "fun" status to "chore."
Just a suggestion.

Johnny's site hacked?
Or is it some sort of inside joke?
http://www.hughesjr.com/
If it's a bona fide hack, I'd be curious to know how the culprit got
in. The the distro's maintainer has gotten burgled one would think that
a lot of other systems are at risk.

Strange soundcard problem w/4.2
Hi there,
I'm trying to repurpose an unused machine (athlon XP 3000+) for my young
daughter to use. It's on a motherboard with a VIA KT880 chipset and VIA
integrated soundcard (VIA 8237). The card seems to be detected during
boot time and shows up in the system log, but when I try to actually use
the sound card within Gnome, there's no sound. The device is detected,

CD emulation (a la daemontools)
I was wondering if anyone was aware of a method for mounting virtual CD
devices with CD image files. I keep images (.CUE/.BIN pairs) of my CD
collection on a NAS appliance tucked away in my closet. I'd like to
write a script to mount each one, create ID tags, rip the tracks, then
move along to the next one. I figure with a quad core opteron, it
should be able to crank through them in a

Phabricator not getting all comments sent by email?
GAH! Sigh.... :(
That is indeed what it does. See stripQuotedText
in src/applications/metamta/parser/PhabricatorMetaMTAEmailBodyParser.php if
anyone's interested in hacking on php code, it looks like it might be
fairly straightforward to have it strip only the lines starting with ">"
after the "On ... wrote:" line.
