A possible improvement to apropos
Hello all,
I've had the following apropos alternative in my ~/.Rprofile for some
time, and have found it more useful than the current version.
Basically, my version ignores case when searching.
If others find this useful, perhaps apropos could be suitably patched
(and I'd be willing to create such a patch).

RFC: adding an 'exact' argument to [[
Hi all,
One of the things I find most problematic in R is the partial matching
of names in lists. Robert and I have discussed this and we believe
that having a mechanism that does not do partial matching would be of
significant benefit to R programmers. To that end, I have written a
patch that modifies the behavior of "[[" as follows:
1. [[ gains an 'exact' argument with

Problem with R-2.5.0 patched and Matrix package
Hi,
Using latest R 2.5.0 Patched, I'm unable to install the Matrix package

I get:

PATCH: install inst/ before doing lazyload on Windows
Hi,
On Windows, package files in the inst/ subdir are installed after the
lazyload creation. This differs from Linux where inst/ is installed
_before_ lazyload creation.
Since packages may need data in inst, I think the order on Windows
should be changed. Perhaps like this:

dict package: dictionary data structure for R
Hi all,
The dict package provides a dictionary (hashtable) data
structure much like R's built-in environment objects, but with the
following differences:
- The Dict class can be subclassed.
- Four different hashing functions are implemented and the user can
specify which to use when creating an instance.
I'm sending this here as opposed to R-packages because this package
will

NA handling in as.character applied to a list
Hi all,
In some circumstances, as.character applied to a list converts real
NA's into the string "NA". Propagation of NAs is something R does
very well and unless there are good reasons for losing the NA, it
would improve the consistency w.r.t. NA handling for as.character to
behave differently.
Here's an example:
## Create a list with character, logical, and integer NA

I would be nice if names() returned the equivalent of ls() for

Dear developers,
has anyone experienced the problem described below? Is it a bug in
handling interrupts in R?

Problem calling $ inside a $ method
Hello,
I wonder if this will make it through the spam filters given the
subject line.
I'm seeing the following when trying to call a dollar method inside of
a dollar method.
setClass("Foo", representation(d="list"))
[1] "Foo"
f <- new("Foo", d=list(bob=1, alice=2))
## We can call dollar at this level and it works as expected

infinite recursion when printing former S4 objects
Hello all,
An S4 class that contains matrix can be converted into a matrix using
as(). When the resulting object is printed implicitly at the command
line, all is well. When print() is explicitly called, I see an
infinite recursion.
Here is an example:
## create a subclass of matrix
> setClass("Foo", representation(name="character"), contains="matrix")

Pretty onscreen plots?
I'm looking for ideas for creating high-quality plots for use in projected
presentations (powerpoint, etc) --- ideally high-quality png, jpg, bmp.
The graphics produced using the postscript device look very good. Those
generated with win.graph(), png are plagued by the jaggy lines.
So far, the only way I can use the postscript plots in my presentations is
using separate screen capture

list/matrix chimera
Hi all,
If dimensions are added to a list, it will become a matrix-like hybrid
that calls itself a matrix, but returns lists for subset operations.
This was brought to my attention by a user that encountered such an
object and was quite confused by its behavior. Although I have not
found the code that created the object yet, I believe that code is
simply incorrect. Nevertheless, I wonder if

Trouble debugging with gdb, R on Windows
I'm trying to follow the example in the R for Windows FAQ on running
gdb and am getting stuck because gdb tells me "Cannot access memory at

Here's what my gdb session looks like (This one from a cygwin shell,
but same results from plain Windows CMD shell):

RFC: allow packages to advertise vignettes on Windows
Hello,
The vignette concept, which started in Bioconductor, seems to be
catching on. They are supported by R CMD build/check and documented
in the Writing R Extensions manual. I think vignettes are a fantastic
way to introduce new users to a package. However, getting new users
to realize that a vignette is available can be challenging.
For some time now, we have had a function in Biobase that

Error on Windows installing package to non-default library

I'm seeing an error on Windows when I try to install a package to a

error as follows using R-devel from Feb 24 on Windows advanced server:

z = .libPaths(c(badLib, z))

Questions about name space directives
Hi,
I'm hoping to get some clarification of the intent of some of
directives used in NAMESPACE files.
1. Is import(somePkg) also intended to import all classes and methods
that are exported via exportClasses and exportMethods in somePkg?
I think import pulls in classes and methods, but it isn't clear
from the docs whether this is as intended.
2. What is exportMethods intended

Possible problem with S4 dispatch
Hi,
First a bit of disclaimer... I haven't isolated this problem into an
easy to reproduce case, and I won't be surprised if the root cause is
a fault in my code's use of name spaces or some such.
The error I'm seeing is one in which the desired method is not found.
What worries me in terms of my expectations of how to debug the
problem is that showMethods and selectMethod both
