install.packages() for local source file
Wish to install a local source package on Un*x platform from
within R. Same thing as I can accomplish from cmdline as
$ export R_LIBS=~/R/library
$ cd /path/to/pkg
$ R CMD INSTALL -l $R_LIBS <pkgname>
So, how do you go about this anyway?
And isn't this a bug in 'install.packages'?

Metapost device driver
Hi All,
I've started work on a MetaPost device driver (please don't hold your
breath).
I've copied the XFig driver and renamed everything and this works, I can
open the new metapost() and it works exactly like the xfig
driver. Now all I have to do is the actual work!
Just one question. There is a magic number in ExtEntries as follows:

rotated and/or greek mtext in pictex()?
Greetings-
I'm aware that there's no documentation for pictex available easily (that
is, without purchasing it). I'm wondering if someone can help me with a
simple task. When generating a plot using pictex() from R, one of the
commands I use is
mtext("Dimension 2: L=xxxx", side=2, line=3)
when using X11(), this appears vertically along the Y axis; when using
pictex(), it

R-plots with 'complex' axis-labelling
Hi there,
I want to create plots with some kind of 'complex' axis labelling of the form
$\dot{V}$ and integrate those plots into a LaTeX document. What is the best
way to go?
I've figured out, that the 'plotmath' commands are somewhat limited (at least
I wasn't able to get the $\dot{V}$ generated) and that plots with
'plotmath'-axes wouldn't export

patch for textspecial and defaultfont in xfig
Hello,
The current xfig device lacks the functionality to set the
textspecial flag and use the defaultfont in xfig. This is necessary
when you want to export to xfig and use interpreted text (e.g., $
\frac{1}{e}$ gets interpreted by latex). The attached patch adds this
functionality.
Why would you like to do this?
- Use math in labels (e.g., name your variables $r_{xy}$, do a

Splitting vector into individual elements
Is there a means to split a vector into its individual
elements without going the brute-force route for arguments
to a predefined function call?
offred.rgb <- c(1, 0, 0) * 0.60;
## Brute force style
offred.col <- rgb(offred.rgb[1],
offred.rgb[2],
offred.rgb[3],
names = "offred")

R 1.1.1 (and 1.2.0) on Mac (PPC) and "/afm/" bugs (?)
Hy (I hope this is the right list).
1. Mac porting
I'm finishing the porting of R for Mac. I hope to finish it for the
end of september. Thanks to the porting of R 0.64 by Ross (that he
gave me) I succeded in this porting. This is the current state:
Both R 1.1.1. and 1.2.0 works with minor modification to the original
code. The Macintosh device has been updated to the new version of

pictex driver and bargraph shading
I'm trying to use the pictex driver for bargraphs, and the shading isn't
showing up. Is there any way to get some sort of shading in the plots? A
hatch or stipple would be fine, too; just some way to differentiate the
bars.
The postscript driver won't do, since I'm trying to embed this in a LaTeX
document which I'll use pdflatex on and \includegraphics for pdftex doesn't

[Q] Apply Function Over Multiple Array Margins
Is there a canonical means to apply a function
over multiple arrays simultaneously? For example,
if I wanted to plot each line with a different color?
Or is a for loop conversion my best option?
x <- seq(0, 8, by = 2)
y <- matrix(1:15, nrow = 5, byrow = TRUE)
my.colors <- heat.colors(3)
drawLines <- function(row) {
lines(x, row) # want corresponding 'my.colors' here
}

R Include File Guards
R 2.1.0/src/include from 2005/04/18 download
Naming inconsistent for guards as well but that's pedantic.
Simple convention:
file <foo.h>
#ifndef R_FOO_H
file <R_ext/bar.h>
#ifndef R_EXT_BAR_H
Missing guards:
<IOStuff.h>
<Internal.h>
<Parse.h>
<R_ext/GraphicsBase.h>
<R_ext/GraphicsDevice.h>
<R_ext/GraphicsEngine.h>

R_AllocatePtr
Had been looking into Luke Tierney's R_AllocatePtr() and
was left with a question about exactly when does R reclaim
heap memory. Implication of 'simpleref.nw' is that one can
allocate C data on the R heap, and as long as pointer object
is alive, the data and pointer will remain valid. But it
calls allocString() which is implemented using R_alloc().

S4 method selection based on second argument
I'm translating some Matlab code and need some help figuring
out how to change this call into an S4 generic method.
In matlab, there's a function called 'repmat' with three
calling sequences (all I have to deal with anyway):
1) B = repmat(A, m, n)
2) B = repmat(A, [m n])
3) B = repmat(A, n)
In all cases, A is the fill value, m is number of rows,
and n is number of

Enumeration in R
I want the equivalent of this 'C' declaration.
enum StoplightColor {
green = 3,
yellow = 5,
red = 7
};
This mostly works except the validity checking doesn't
seem to occur automatically. What didn't I do to enable
it?
setClass("stoplightColor",
representation(value = "integer"),
prototype = integer(1))

Need car() and cdr() for '...'
Needed to redefine function "sum" for my MATLAB package.
There's something similar in Chambers's Green Book (pg 351)
so I modified it as such:
library(methods)
setGeneric("sum", function(x, ..., na.rm = FALSE) {
if (nDotArgs(...) > 0)
sum(c(sum(x, na.rm = na.rm),
sum(..., na.rm = na.rm)))
else
standardGeneric("sum")
})

raster support in graphics devices
Hi
This is for developers of extension packages that provide extra
*graphics devices* for R.
In the *development* version of R, support has been added to the
graphics engine for sending raster images (bitmaps) to a graphics
device. This consists mainly of two new device functions: dev_Raster()
and dev_Cap().
The R_GE_version constant (in GraphicsEngine.h) has been bumped up to 6

moving data and output?
Hello,
I have a few questions now:
1. How can I move data the following way:
I have 2 variables:
one two
1 5 ^
3 4 |
1 3 |
4 4 |
Now I want to move the two one arround (sorry I don't know how to say
that in english). That means: I want to move the first item at the
end of my column and move the second at the first place, the third at
the second, and so on. You can see it at

sprintf question
How would one go about getting sprintf to use the
values of a vector without having to specify each
argument individually?

Essentially, desired effect would be something like:
