BLAS/Lapack on OS X
R-devel has the --with-lapack flag for configure. If you build R with
--with-blas="-framework vecLib" --with-lapack="--framework vecLib"
then the build goes through, using the native optimized BLAS and
Lapack in /System/Library/Frameworks/vecLib.framework. Also, it
works, in the sense that it does eigenvalue problems correctly.
I don't have any timings yet, because I

BLAS/Lapack for OS X
OS X 10.2 and higher comes standard with highly optimized versions
of BLAS and Lapack in /Systems/Library/Frameworks/vecLib.framework.
It seems that even for double precision they do much better. See
http://sthmac.magnet.fsu.edu/benchmarks/
I am not sure how these numbers would look on G3 Macs, but
obviously for double precision there is not much reliance on Altivec.
So I tried to configure

Building r-devel on Panther
I did:
./configure --with-blas='-framework vecLib' --with-lapack --with-aqua
make
sudo make install
sudo make install-aqua
Everything seems to be OK (some warnings about multiple definitions of
some symbols). However:
bass$ /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Resources/bin/R
Fatal error: unable to open the base package
I got the same message when clicking on R.app in /Applications

Darwin-Aqua R-devel
I've been able to build a very primitive Aqua GUI for Darwin R.
This version as minimum event handler support but at least you can drag
around the quartz device.
You need to download the RAqua.app.sit archive from
http://www.economia.unimi.it/R/
You need to unstuff it and put inside your system Applications folder
(i.e. /Applications)
If you click on the RAqua icon nothing will happen

FLAME
Yesterday I ported FLAME to OS X
(http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/flame/index.html).
FLAME is a system to automatically (currently semi-automatically)
generate
efficient and correct linear algebra routines in C or MATLAB or MPI
from descriptions
of the algorithms. It uses code that relies heavily on partitioning of
matrices,
and avoids indices as much as possible. There are a number of

R 1.7.0 fails to compile on OS X 10.2.5
Hello -
I'm trying to compile R 1.7.0 on a PowerBook running OS X 10.2.5. I've
compiled R (1.6.2) successfully before on this machine, under either
10.2.3 or 10.2.4. My gcc is from the latest Apple Developer Tools
release and the g77 is up-to-date via Fink. R passes ./configure just
fine, with the following options:
R is now configured for powerpc-apple-darwin6.5

RAqua with X11 TclTk
I've built a version of RAqua that uses X11 TclTk and NOT AquaTclTk.
http://www.economia.unimi.it/R/RAquaX11.dmg (15 MB disk image)
The idea is that you: launch RAqua, launch X application (the X
Server), and from inside R type
x11() # just tt set DISPLAY to :0.0. Eventually close this window
device, we don't need this.
load(tcltk)
quartz()
demo(tkdensity)
It works on my Panther

point size in svg
Hello, All:
????? I'm unable to control the font size in plots to svg.? Consider
the following:
svg('cex-svg.svg')
cex. <- 5
plot(1:2, cex.axis=cex.)
text(1:2, 1:2, c('as', 'DF'),
????????? cex=cex.)
dev.off()
????? When I open this in Gimp 2.10.4, the font size is tiny.? I also
tried:
svg('cex-svg.svg', width=15, height=15, pointsize=24)
cex.

Re: [R-SIG-Mac] NaN and linear algebra
No, blas/veclib is tested, so aprt this extreme case you should report
some other more commonly used cases in which something fails on OS X.
This will help us to work it out.
As said, I'll try some tests without using veclib and let you know.
I've fowarded this mail to r-devel, which seems to be the right place,
so for future msg on the subject please use r-devel.

R-1.7.0 beta available
I've set up for daily distribution builds of the current development
version. These are available at
http://cran.us.r-project.org/src/base/
The current one is
R-1.7.0beta_2003-03-26.tar.gz
(and it's pretty useless to wait for them to be mirrored elsewhere...)
Notice that these are made using "make dist" (like the final release
will be) and thus they may have

BLAS benchmarks on R 2.12.0
Hi,
I saw on the mailing list and in the NEWS file that some unsafe math
transformations were disabled for the reference BLAS implementation
that is used in R. We have a set of performance tests for the OpenMx
library, and some of the tests have a x3-10 slowdown in R 2.12.0
versus 2.11.1. When I copy the shared library libRblas.0.dylib from
the 2.11.1 installation into the 2.12.0 installation,

In an implied call to an S3 print method, deparse(substitute(x)) returns

OpenBLAS in everyday R?
On point 1):
The standard approach seems to favor the reference BLAS for reasons other
than speed.
For example, vecLib, Apple's multi-threaded BLAS library, is not the
default choice for macOS binaries due to concerns about 'precision'. See:

make? on Macos 10.2.4
Greetings on A.N. Kolmogorov's 100th birthday:
I am sure that this is a resolved problem, certainly it has been raised in R help
several times before, but I can't seem to find the right clue. I've recently
upgraded a G4 to OS 10.2.5 and I thought I would have another go at installing
R from source, after failing to accomplish this in 10.1.
So with 1.7.0 from CRAN configure seems to
