fstype=auto breaks updatedb
It turns out that if you specify filesystem type `auto' in
/etc/fstab, updatedb (the thing which updates your `locate'
database) ceases to work.
Here's the contents of my /etc/updatedb.conf:
PRUNEFS="devpts NFS nfs afs proc smbfs autofs auto iso9660"
PRUNEPATHS="/tmp /usr/tmp /var/tmp /afs /net"
export PRUNEFS
export PRUNEPATHS

Broken pipe
I updated my x86 machine day before yesterday, and I noticed two
things. The clamav user and group was deleted, and not recreated, and
when the makewhatis ran, I got a page full of "zcat: stdout: Broken
pipe" entries. What gives with the makewhatis and clamav? Was clamav
removed from the software? I encountered no errors when the transaction
check and transactions were run.

CentOS-4.4 update: don't forget those rpmsave and rpmnew files folks!
After you do your update, done forget to do updatedb, makewhatis, ...
The locate for rpmnew has a couple items of interest and the locate for
rpmsave returns one that occupies 24MB of your precious disks -
/var/lib/Pegasus/prev-repository*.
It compresses nicely to appx. 1MB, cpio bzipped --best.
Change in your rndc key too, for DNS.

Upgrading Perl (modules) / RequestTracker
I'm attempting to install RequestTracker on CentOS 6.5. Running "make
testdeps" as recommended by RT's installation guide, I'm presented with
lists of missing Perl modules.
One of these lines reads:
Encode >= 2.39 ...MISSING
Now, "yum whatprovides '*/Encode.pm' " informs me that that module is
part of the core Perl distribution, and is

HELP! Group info problem
I just tried an install from my local repo (boot from CD 1, use http
method), and it failed right after entering the root password setting with:
Unable to read group information from repositories.
This is a problem with the generation of your install tree.
Reboot
So now what? Is there something I can just extract from the isos?
(remember I did that rsync).
Is this caused by running

swapping on centos 5.1
Hi all,
I used to use centos 4.5 on an AMD 4800+ with 2GIG ram.
Now I use centos 5.1 on AMD 6400+ with 4GIG RAM.
The system responsiveness is different between the two.
I noticed that centos 5.1 seems to be swapping programs out
of memory at times resulting in slowness (perceived by me).
I played with swappiness (/proc/sys/vm/) setting to 10, then 1 then 0.
Still resulted in the same perceived

cron.weekly
Just looked at the log from the x86_64 machine and I see the same zcat:
stdout: Broken pipe in the 00-makewhatis.cron job as on the x86
machine. Did I miss some thread about current updates somewhere?

Memory leak with XP Clients
Hello,
I am having a serious problem with clients that are connecting to our
Mandrake 8.1 server that is using the Samba 2.2.2 RPM. After a few days of
having the computers on they will start to take up 200M of ram as reported
by top. I don't have this problem with any of the other clients, Win2k, ME,
98 or 95.
Is there a setting I need to change on the client side? The only way to

cvs or svn
Hi All;
Which is better (to have more stable or release
versions) of zaptel, libpri and asterisk: to use cvs
or svn?
In case of using cvs, why I need to type:
export
CVSROOT=:pserver:anoncvs:anoncvs at cvs.digium.com:/usr/cvsroot
In other words: what is the use of pserver, anoncvs,
... with cvs checkout?
Note: How can I know all the variables needed for cvs
checkout so I might need to do

cross-compile problems
Hi,
I've successfully compiled flac-1.1.2 to transcode flac to wav with
twonkyvision running on a DNS-323 which has a ARM-processor. The
problem is that from time to time something hangs. Therefore I have
tried to compile the newest flac, flac-1.2.1, and it compiles with no
problems but when running it, for example "flac -t test.flac", it
only echos "Illegal

Metadata block requirements
Hello,
I have recently found a number of FLAC files that have a PICTURE block
as the first metadata block in the file. From the format documentation,
it mentions that the STREAMINFO block must be present as the first
block. I'm guessing that someone somewhere is not playing nicely with
the format, but I just wanted to confirm that this is incorrect so that
I can fix the files if they

This may or may not be CentOS related, but am out of ideas at this

I'm running a CentOS 5.5 server, running the latest kernel 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.
Almost everyday around 3:30 AM the server completely locks up and has

[OT] would any of you recommend a ticketing system?
Hi all, sorry for being OT but would any of you recommend a ticketing system?
We'd like something pretty comprehensive to cover helpdesk and HR stuff as
well as software bugs/requests. There seems to be a million variations
out there.

After the recent attacks on the major servers on the web my ISP has
decided to stop all ICMP messages from his ISP.
I have red the RFCs and it seems that he cant do that... As a result
pings and traceroutes will not work.
I need a friendly person out there to tell me a way to break the news to
him that he has to allow ICMP packets
through his network... any suggestions would be helpfull

make installworld Error code 64
Hi,
I am a long time OpenBSD user trying FreeBSD. I am attempting to upgrade my
system from FreeBSD RELEASE 4.7 to "STABLE"
This is my first post to this list so please be gentle : )
I followed
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld.html
But when I get to "21.4.9 Install the New System Binaries" This happens:
