Using R under Emacs
Dear R-help,
I would like to use R 1.3.0 under emacs-20.7. with the help of
ess-5.1.19 in the windows system. I downloaded the ess-5.1.19 and tried
to follow instructions strictly.
1. cd to a directory where you keep emacs lisp files
-------------> no question
2. Retrieve the compressed the
zipped file `ESS-5.1.19.zip' from one of the FTP.

XEmacs vs. GNU Emacs?
As a user of only R, I don't use much of the potential of ESS and Emacs.
Without entering a religious feud, is there any reason I should use XEmacs
rather than my current GNU Emacs?
(I looked on the XEmacs site, but I didn't understand the programming
issues they were talking about (over my head).)

Date Time Conversion problems...
At one time (version 1.7), the code below used to work for converting and
extracting based on the Date Time. In version 1.8.1, something changed I
know, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what...

emacs 21.1, R-1.3.1, and ESS
On RedHat linux 7.2, I upgraded (?) Emacs and R at the same time and now
I'm getting some funny business with R and ESS. I reinstalled ESS from
the tarball and re-byte-compiled. In particular, help.start() does
work, and ESS works to send text regions to the R process, but ?function
does not return anything, and the status line says
"ESS process not ready. Finish your command

ks.test not working?
Hi,
I am performing GEV analysis on temperature/precipitation data and want to use the ks.boot function but I am unsure of how to implement it using the pgev distribution.
For example:
ks.test(data,pgev,shape,location,scale)
ks.boot(data,(distribution parameters?),alternative="pgev",nboots=1000)
Any advice? Apologies in advance if I have used the wrong email address.
Regards,
Louise

further on ESS/XEmacs for Windows
Dear list members,
I've had helpful feedback from a number of people, several of whom
experienced some problems getting my XEmacs/ESS configuration files for
Windows to work properly. I will, of course, make changes based on this
feedback, but the following information may be of use in the interim:

EMACS/ESS problems
Hello all,
since we're on the topic of R-editors. I am using emacs/ess on a unix
workstation (to interact with R and have been having a little problem. I
usually write the R commands I need to run in a separate buffer then
copy and paste them into the *R* buffer for evaluation. The problem is,
if any command is spread over multiple lines emacs/R hangs when I paste
it in the R buffer for

Can't get Sweave syntax highlighting with Emacs
I can't get Emacs to automatically do syntax highlighting of
Sweave files. I have followed Friedrich's suggestion for code
to insert into my .emacs file. The complete section from my .emacs
file is given below. When I load a *.Snw file, font is white until I press
M-x, then the first code and document chunks get highlighted, but not
the rest of the file. Latex and Noweb menus are

Cannot login to PDC after upgrade
We recently converted our Redhat9 Samba server to Debian Sarge/testing. We
are running (3.0.2a-Debian). After installing Debian, I itegrated the old
configuration files (smb.conf, smbpasswd, smbusers, secrets.tdb) making
changes where I thought it was necessary. When I tried to login to our
Windows 2000 server using rdesktopl, windows tells me that I've specified

Installing ESS under EMACS
Dear members,
I have spent some time to make clear how I could write R programs from within EMACS using the ESS package, under Win98. Unfortunately, I have found this not quite clear for Windows 98 (though a lot of details are provided for UNIX).
I have tried to create a .emacs file with a command such as (load "PATH/ess-site.el") and also added a "PATH=...\rw1010\" line in

"Debugging R from within Emacs"
In
"Frequently Asked Questions on R"
there is a section
"Debugging R from within Emacs"
I suppose this is for developpers ( not useful to debug R source code ).

Emacs & ESS under Windows
After the discussions about appropriate editors under Windows to use with
R, I have managed to install Emacs, XEmacs, and ESS under WinNT 4.0, and
these work fine. It's not necessary to compile anything to use R with ESS,
just to install Emacs and ESS, and do a few modifications in some files.
XEmacs is also easy to install but apparently ESS cannot run with it

FAQ and Answer: How to convert factors back to integers
(thanks to thomas for assistance; I'm posting this for archival
reasons).
Question:
My silly dataset looks like "00223423", "00234234", ...
and when I read it in, I get a factor which looks like and
integer. How do I convert it back?

need help installing ESS on Win95
Has anyone successfully installed ESS on Win95?
I have emacs version 19.34.6 and R version 0.63.3.
The ESS README and Makefiles seem pretty Unix-specific.
