Questions about lexical scope
Dear R-users, The numerical integration example given in Gentleman and Ihaka (2000), "Lexical Scope and Statistical Computing," JCGS, 9, 491-508, is very interesting and helpful in understanding how lexical scope is about. However, I got some questions that I just can't figure out. First all, allow me to copy the two functions given by the authors: midpoint <- function(f, a,

Gentleman and Ihaka , 2000 paper question
In their paper, "Lexical Scope and Statistical Computing", the authors ( Gentleman and Ihaka ) go to great length explaining why R's use of lexical scoping creates advantages when doing statistical computations. If anyone has or is familiar with this paper, could they provide the main program code for how the "newton" function would be called in their example on page 500

Convex smoothing via 'Iterative Convex Minorant' ?
I've been asked, and interested myself: Has anybody implemented the above in R or another S language dialect? We are talking about the algorithms / methodology by Wellner, Groeneboom and Jongbloed, e.g., from the following article @Article{Jongbloed:1998:ICM, author = "Geurt Jongbloed", title = "The Iterative Convex Minorant Algorithm for

Gentleman and Ihaka's integrity in question
It does look like Gentleman and Ihaka not only lied to the New York Times, but also to the New Zealand Herald and who knows who else. This is disgusting. The R programming language is the S programming language, and Gentleman and Ihaka are not the ones who designed it. http://thenewyorktimesissloppy.blogspot.com/

Exporting an rgl graph
Hi the list, I use rgl to produce a 3D graph. I would like to "show" this graph to some collaborator. Is there a way to save it and send it to someone else? Christophe Genolini

R-beta: Re: S Compatibility
Bill Venables writes: > Are the scoping differences between R and S set out precisely and > definitively somewhere? This would be useful. In the source code perhaps? :-) You can find a pretty precise description in the article Robert and I did in JCGS. Actually its pretty simple. Functions have access to the variables which were in effect when the function was defined. f <-

Electronic copy of Ihaka and Gentleman (1996)?
Hi, The R FAQ suggests that we can cite Ihaka and Gentleman (1996) in publications. Does anyone have an electronic copy of this that could be (legally) made publically available -- my library here doesn't take this journal (Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics). Otherwise, I can order it through interlibrary loan. Thanks, Stephen
