gnuclient problems witrh R/ESS in linux
Dear list,

A hint to start ESS-xemacs
I'm trying to use ESS & xemacs under debian linux testing and KDE.
My problem is that I didn't find any document in the internet explaining a
**step by step** session with R and xemacs.
The (wrong) procedure I follow (to no avail!) is:
1) I start R in a terminal window;
2) I start xemacs and open a file with the extension .R (test.R);
3) I issue M-x R RET and I can see an Rd new

rterm not shutting down from ESS on Win32/could we help?
Hi to all who suffer from rterm not shutting down in xemacs/ESS on windows NT or 2000. Also hi to those who could eventually help. Here is some more information which could help and some ENCOURAGEMENT to contribute to a solution.
1. It may be an xemacs problem but it is more likely an interaction between rterm/comint/and xemacs. In fact, the problem started occurring around version R 1.6.0. I

You can use ESS and either XEmacs 21.0 (currently wrapping up beta) or
NTEmacs, or Emacs(FSF) to edit files.
IF the mingwin(?) or cygwin versions of R allow for command-line

quitting iESS[R] (R in ESS)
One thing that has driven me batty to no end is the fact that ESS
doesn't handle R's "exit" well. Any thoughts as to the default? I'm
thinking of something like:
current: do what currently is done
C-u Y C-c C-q : quit and save workspace
C-u N C-c C-q : quit and don't save workspace.
Comments?

Some teaching/training materials (ESS/ESS-Noweb-Sweave/SNOW)
http://www.analytics.washington.edu/~rossini/courses/cph-statcomp/
Lecture/Labs 1 and 2 are on For ESS, ESS-Noweb-Sweave.
Lecture/Lab 4 is on parallel computing with R
(each Lecture/Lab was just under 2 hours).
Comments/corrections welcome, they were used last week here in
Copenhagen, so "most" of the bugs are out.

R-alpha: R interaction within ESS-4.9-b11: two small issues
1) I installed the latest ESS (Emacs Speaks Statistics) beta release
on a machine running Linux. Since there is no S-PLUS product for
Linux, I set the ess-site.el file for R, xlisp-stat, and S version 4.
I.e.,

XEmacs vs. GNU Emacs?
As a user of only R, I don't use much of the potential of ESS and Emacs.
Without entering a religious feud, is there any reason I should use XEmacs
rather than my current GNU Emacs?
(I looked on the XEmacs site, but I didn't understand the programming
issues they were talking about (over my head).)

ESS with Xemacs? [vs. Emacs, slightly off topic]
I decided to try out Xemacs instead of Emacs in Linux (RH 7.2).
After doing lots of configuration of Xemacs, I finally discovered
a major problem.
With Emacs, when I use R, I start Emacs twice (at least), in
different viewports, once as
emacs -f R
and once as
emacs myfile.R
Then I try commands in the first one, and, when they work (which
isn't very often), I cut the command with C-w,

partially off-topic: ESS WWW site is moving
Since it of partially related interest here:
The Emacs Statistical System (Emacs Speaks Statistics) WWW site, along
with all of the content formerly on software.biostat.washington.edu,
is moving with me to a new location,
http://www.analytics.washington.edu/
with ESS specifically moving to

gnuclient.exe as pager ?
Hi,
I see there are some previous threads on gnuclient.exe, but I can't
figure this out based on those...
I recently started using ESS with Xemacs. I'm on Windows XP. On starting
iESS, my editor gets set to 'gnuclient.exe'. I don't understand how this
works, since there is no executable anywhere on my machine called
"gnuclient.exe". But I have no complaints: I like

ESS+R not closing gracefully
I am having trouble with ESS+R. I don't know if it is an ESS
problem or an R problem, so I'm posting to this mailing list in
the first instance.
I am using R 1.6.2, Windows XP (latest updates installed), XEmacs 21.4,
and ESS 5.1.21. I have experienced the same problem under Windows 2000 and
recent versions of Emacs and ESS (though my current Windows XP
installation is from scratch, and

help.start() works with Mozilla, but not with ESS
In a recent post, I reported that help.start worked with Mozilla,
although it had not worked before. I now have discovered the
difference. I'm using RH Linux 7.1 and Mozilla 0.9.5 and R
1.3.1.
When I tried it before, I had use ESS to start R. If I run R
without ESS, help.start() will start the browser (Mozilla), but
help(apply), for example, will produce help in ESS but not in the
browser.

ESS 5.1.19 w/Xemacs 21.4.6
Probably wrong group for this, but a quick question. I've just switched
from emacs to Xemacs. In reinstalling ESS 5.1.19 I keep getting the
following error when loading Xemacs:
"Error in init file: Symbol's function definition is void: w32-using-nt"
I've debugged the ess-site.el file, which is where the error originates
from. The line causing the difficulty is:

ESS 5.2.7 released
Dear ESS users, {BCC'ed to RPM and Debian maintainers of ESS}
We have now released ESS 5.2.7. This is a bug fix release against 5.2.6
where - the new UTF-8 "support" gave problems for Xemacs, and
- accidentally, 'auto-fill-mode' was activated for *.R buffers
with a few new features, see "New Features" below , notably some
extended Sweave supported,
